In many ways, the English proverb mighty oaks from little acorns grow represents the impact made by the thou-sands of generous and loyal PIKE brothers and friends of Pi Kappa Alpha. Thanks to the ongoing financial assistance that continues to grow each year, the Fraternity is able to bolster its programs in support of educating and empowering principled leaders.

Year-in and year-out, the Fraternity is challenged to establish a financial strategy to address the needs of today’s student, while simul-taneously preparing for the future landscape of Pi Kappa Alpha. In this 2013 Annual Report we highlight the many chapter-specific, individual, and international scholar-ships and grants that have been made available to the Fraternity by generous alumni and friends who have contributed to the PIKE Foun-dation. We also honor the supporters of the Campaign for PIKE University whose

stretch gifts have helped us secure over $7 million in support of leadership and personal development edu-cation for our students.

The donations of time and treasure made to Pi Kappa Alpha year after year have turned our modest beginning into something great. We are champions and advocates for those who want to become better men through experi-ences and opportunities that only Pi Kappa Alpha can provide.

On behalf of all PIKE Founda-tion volunteers and staff, we thank you for “nurturing the Oak”, and supporting the young men who will lead our campuses, communities and society.

“Events such as the Chap-ter Executives Confer-ence not only provide the opportunity for personal leadership development, but ensure our chapter officers are receiving the best operations training available – sustaining the success of Pi Kappa Alpha long term.”

G. Brint Ryan, North Texas,

Epsilon Delta ’83

“PIKE University has clearly demonstrated its ability to develop and train our undergraduates. This has resulted in increased chap-ter success through height-ened leadership skills. By endowing these programs, we are directly investing in the future success of our young men.”

Thomas C. Tillar, Virginia Tech, Epsilon ’70

“Never before have alumni had such a compelling reason to give back to Pi Kappa Alpha, and what better reason than the personal development and leadership training of our undergraduates. Rallying support for PIKE University programs is truly in line with the mission and vision of our Fraternity, help-ing ensure that all Pikes become principled citizens and courageous leaders.”

YEAR-END FINANCIAL REPORTIn 2013, the Pi Kappa Alpha Foundation built upon the success of the last few years, offering particular focus to growing the Endowment Fund. Cash receipts increased by nearly 40% over the previous year as donors fulfilled pledges made for the Campaign for PIKE University. The year was also a strong one for investments; market value adjustments paired with additional deposits resulted in the greatest period of growth in the 65-year history of the Foundation’s Endowment Fund.

The success realized in 2013 was not limited to one particular area. Unrestricted net assets increased by over $206,000 while permanently-restricted net assets increased by nearly $1.3 mil-lion. The importance of donors providing unrestricted gifts was

clearly demonstrated as the Foundation invested only $235,920 in (unrestricted) fundraising costs to raise $1,626,702 in restricted donations, representing a total return of 590%.

With respect to grants and scholarships, the Foundation granted nearly half a million dollars more than in the prior year, an increase of 170%. As the Campaign for PIKE University nears its successful completion, the Foundation will strive to maintain the momentum generated during this period of unparalleled success while continuing to provide clear and accurate reporting to donors as the investors in Pi Kappa Alpha’s future.

The PIKE Foundation manages an endowment for the benefit of Pi Kappa Alpha and its membership for educational and charitable purposes including, but not limited to, scholarships, educational program grants and associated administrative purposes.

The financial and investment operations of the Foundation are under the direct oversight of the organization’s Board of Trustees, which delegates specific responsibilities to separate committees. The Foundation’s Endowment Fund & Gift Acceptance Commit-tee reviews Fund performance and monitors market conditions in order to ensure long-term growth and to guarantee the in-come needed for the annual scholarships and grants to which

the Foundation is committed. Additionally, the Committee has engaged a third-party wealth management firm to assist with the investment and management of the organization’s funds.

The Foundation’s financial statements are annually audited by an independent firm in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the U.S.

CHAPTER ENDOWMENT FUNDSThe PIKE Foundation has established Chapter Endowment Funds (CEFs) for each chapter of the Organization (silent and active). These funds have been supported through undergraduate giving (φφka Club) and tax-deductible donations from alumni and friends.

Each CEF is managed and invested by the Foundation Board of Trustees and used to benefit undergraduates. Once a specific chapter’s fund reaches $10,000 for one fiscal year, the Foundation annu-

ally awards 3%-5% of the corpus amount. As the balance grows, so does the size of the grant. They are designed to grow and last in perpetuity.

Annual grants from these funds provide scholarships to chapters and students for PIKE University programming and events.

As of December 31, 2013, the Foundation manages $2,090,014 for this program. Only 57 chapters currently have endowed CEFs ($10,000+). By making a restricted

gift to your chapter’s endowment fund, you can help fully establish or grow an-nual proceeds to directly support PIKE students from your alma mater.
