    Nanotechnology,ever since itsadvent,hasbecomesynonymouswithelectronicsandbiomedical applications.Very fewhaveventured into thearenaofphytooragronanotechnology,possiblyduetocomplexityoftheplantsystemsandvariousotherlimitations.Muchoftheplantnanotechnologyrelationshiphasbeenrevolvingaroundthesynthesisofdiversenanoparticlesemployingtheextractsofdifferentpartsofplantsviz.,seeds,flowers,leaves,rootsetc.Offlate,withanincreaseinthewidespreadsynthesisanduseofnanomaterials,muchofwhichareknowingly/unknowinglyreleasedintotheenvironment,focushas shifted to their fate and consequent effects on the life forms. With concerns of toxicity, concurrent attention has been driven to their uptake,translocationandbiotransformationintheplantsystems.Thoughtoomuchofanythingistoxic,observationshavealsobeenmadeonthebeneficialaspectsofvariousnanomaterialswhichhavebeenfoundtoenhancewaterandnutrientuptake,gaseousexchange,anddeliveryofcrucialchemicalstotheplants.

    Asourgrouptooisconcentratedonthesynthesisofvariednanomaterials,itwasonlytoorelevantthattheirenvironmentaleffectsbemonitored.Apartfromthetoxicityanalysis,studieshavebeeninitiatedinthefollowingareas;

    Roleofdifferentnanomaterialsontheenhancementofplantgrowthcharacteristics.

    Observationsofvitalmetabolicparametersasphotosynthesis,respiration,reproduction,yieldetc.

    Administration ofnanopesticides, herbicides and fertilizers in a more efficient and safe manner by controlling precisely when and where they are

    released.

    Trackingnanomaterialsintheplantsystemutilizingfluorescentdyesandquantumdots.

    Theoverallfateofdifferentnanomaterialsinplants,generationaltransferandtheirexposurepathwaysintheenvironment.

    Apartfromtheapplicationofnanotechnologytoplants,thesustainableutilizationofplantproductsinnanotechnologyisalsobeinginvestigated.Mostoftheplantmediatedsynthesisofnanomaterialsarebasedonfoodorcashcrops.Suchapracticemayseementicingnowbutinthelongtermwillposetremendouspressureontheeverincreasingdemandofthesecrops.Therefore,wehaveinitiatedapromisingalternativetoutilizenonedible,alternativeplantresourcesforthesynthesisofnanomaterialsandtheirutilizationinfieldsasnanodrugdeliveryandtherelated.Suchapracticewillnotonlybypassthefoodcrops,butalsoelevatetheeconomicprospectsofthesealternativecropspecies.
