What is PPIG?The South Canterbury Physiotherapy Primary I n t e r v e n t i o n G r o u p ( P P I G ) i s a g r o u p o f physiotherapists who developed and provide a sixteen week community based,individualised e xe r c i s e a n d m u l t i d i s c i p l i n a r y e d u c a t i o n programme for the management of early to moderate hip and knee osteoarthritis for adults in the South Canterbury region.

What does the programme involve?Ÿ A n i n i t i a l 6 0 m i n u t e a s s e s s m e n t b y a

physiotherapist to assess impairment and function, and to set personalized goals.

Ÿ Exercise classes supervised by the assessing physiotherapist with individually tailored exercise programs. Classes are at a time convenient to working people.

Ÿ Weekly classes for twelve weeks and four weeks self-directed exercises as a home based programme

Ÿ Multi-disciplinary education evening

Ÿ Lifestyle changes including support for smoking cessation and weightloss

Ÿ A follow-up assessment aer 16 weeks to review progress, goals and outcome measures.

Why?Research has shown that people with hip/knee osteoarthritis who participate in an early intervention exercise programme experience slower disease progression, achieve improved fitness and function and have less pain.

How much?Although the programme is subsidized by the South Canterbury District Hleath Board, there is a co-payment of $150 per person for the full 16 week programme.
