Figure Skating• Figure skating is an Olympic sport which

individuals, pairs, or groups perform intricate and challenging moves on ice skates

• It is a fun and relaxing activity

• Figure skating is a good sport to see physics in action

Physics of Figure Skating

• Friction

• Angular Momentum

• Newton’s Third Law

Friction

• Friction is the force which resists when 2 objects slide against one another

• The rougher the surface, the more friction occurs

• The ice is smooth, so there is little friction between the ice and the blades of the ice skates

Friction (continued)• Low level of friction

on ice allows a skater to glide along the surface smoothly without friction stopping the motion as soon as it's begun

• The small amount of friction also allows ice skaters to stop whenever they want to

Angular Momentum

• A quantity that can be used to describe the overall state of a physical system

• To perform a spin or jump with several rotations in the air-needs to generate angular momentum

• The skater applies a force against the ice, the ice then applies a ground reaction force on the skater

• This ground reaction force causes gives the skater angular momentum

Angular Momentum (continued)

• The point of application and line of action of angular momentum is critical

• If the line of action of the force is directed through the skater's axis of rotation, then she won't spin Mao Asada

Newton’s Third Law

• For every force applied there is an equal and opposite reaction

• Push off against the ice-applying a force down and back against the ground

• Ice pushes right back, supplying a force forward and up that propels the skaters into a glide or jump, depending on the particulars of the force they applied
