Randy Beikmann Talks Physics
Thursday, March 19 - 6:30 PM to 8:30 PMat Bentley Publishers1734 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA
CAMBRIDGE, MA USA — February 26, 2015
Please join us as author Randy Beikmann shows an innovative new method for drawing on the world of cars and motorsports to illuminate basic physics principles for those who are self-proclaimed gearheads.
Randy's talk will focus on his brand-new book Physics for Gearheads. In his book, Randy teaches basic physics principles through relevant and interesting automotive examples, using new real-world data sets that come from the world of motorsports and automotive engineering. For example, kinematics applications are illustrated using examples ranging from piston speed to drag racing and Formula 1. Randy, a technical specialist in automotive noise and vibration at the General Motors Milford Proving Ground, holds a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan. He has published numerous papers on powertrain noise and vibration and has helped design and teach classes at GM within his engineering specialty.
The event is free. Sandwiches and light refreshments will be served. Although an RSVP is not required, it's great for us to ensure that we have the right amount of food for everyone. If you'd like to RSVP, just let us know at the link below:

Outlines of drag racer Don Garlits' famed Swamp Rat XIII, and Swamp Rat XIV with no wing, as it first ran. Each major component is shown as a solid steel sphere scaled to its weight. The CG of Swamp Rat XIII is show without (black) and with ballast (red). The curved arrows show the major changes in component CG locations between the two cars. From Chapter 17: Statics and Quasi-Statics Applications - Section 5: Garlits, μ and the End of the Slingshot Era
