Hall A BIA-like Projects1. Upgrade of the slow-controls system - $300k

Upgrade needed to replace obsolete equipment, no longer in production. Spares have been depleted or nearly depleted.

Systems included are (1) cryogenic control systems, (2) HRS controls (e.g. VME IOCs for magnet controls),  (3) measurement instrumentation and, (4) rebuild of the various magnet power supplies internal electronics.

Cost based on external group estimates (e.g. cryo group ~ 100 k$), quotes from vendors and catalog items.

2. DAQ upgrade for the two HRSs - $600kThe upgrade is needed to (a) replace obsolete components and (b) achieve substantially higher data acquisition rates using pipelined electronics.  (Note:  one of these was originally in the project and "de-scoped" while the second was never in the project but is equally necessary for the planned 12 GeV experimental program)

3. Recondition vacuum system and exit beam pipe - $110kSeveral sections of the exit beam pipe show signs of corrosion caused by chemical compounds generated when running beam in the hall.

Cost estimate based on previous experience.

4. Replace Wika cryo-valves by regular JLab valves - $100kThe Wika cryo-valves have the control electronics in the valve head.  Due to their locations on the magnets, the valves are exposed to large amounts of radiation which affects their operation & calibration causing instabilities in the cryogenic distribution system of Hall A & magnet crashes.

Cost estimate provided by cryo group

5. Expand gas shed - $75kExpand gas shed to house larger gas distribution system capable of handling additional detectors (e.g. GEMs of Super-Big-Bite and Big-Bite)

Cost estimate based on previous experience

6. Upgrade controls of HRS bogie system - $50kMost of the system components are no longer available including the servo amplifiers and motors.

Cost estimate based on catalog items.

7. Replace front-end electronics of HRS VCDs - $75kIncrease event rate capability of HRS VDCs.

Cost based on catalog & previous purchases.

8. Upgrade first layer of trigger scintillators - $80kIncrease thickness of first plane of trigger scintillators to improve timing resolution. Upgrade will improve particle discrimination by time-of-flight.

Cost based on catalog items & previous purchases.

9. Recondition A1 aerogel detector - $150kDetector refurbishing for upcoming experiments.

Cost based on catalog items.

Sum of all nine Hall A projects - $1,540k

CLAS Removal Summary

• Start 5/15/2012 – Finish 10/26/2012

• Schedule as presented based on single shift – Goal is to be ready for Torus installation when Magnet arrives since it must be

first and will take up most of the Hall

• Schedule has ~14000hrs in 120 work days thus average crew is 14 people

• Major contracts– North and South Clam Shell Removal - 27 days – Torus Removal– 15 days

Upgrade of CLAS12 ADB to DCRB• Plan at the time of the CD-3 review (5/08) for the drift chamber

readout system included:– The original CLAS Amplifier Discriminator Board (ADB), – The multiplexing circuit, – The Level 2 Segment Finding System and – The FastBus 1877 TDC.

• Proposed upgrade idea – Eliminates the need for very old FastBus crates and LeCroy 1877 TDC modules. – The superlayer track finding function could be added at any time and would

take advantage of the Crate Trigger Processor (CTP) already designed for the 12GeV trigger systems

Page 11: Physics Division “BIA-Like” Projects L. S. Cardman

Overview of the Proposed DCRB

The proposed new CLAS12 Drift Chamber Readout Board (DCRB) would include:

• A complete upgrade of the ADB module. Amplifier and discriminator functions would remain virtually identical to the original ADB module but the pulse width circuitry and ECL output drivers would be eliminated. The common threshold voltage for the discriminator function would be programmable through VME and the test pulse control for each group of sixteen amplifier channels would also be retained and controlled through VME.

• A single FPGA would be added to the new DCRB to capture the output hits from each drift chamber wire that crosses threshold, and produce a TDC value for these wire outputs with a resolution of 1ns. The TDC values would be readout through VME upon receipt of a system readout trigger.

• Scaler functions could be implemented to count wire hits or other values which would be very useful for monitoring purposes.

• The FPGA would also process these discriminated signals and serially transmit to the central Crate Trigger Processor. The CTP function would be programmed to produce a trigger signal based on the track segments of two superlayers. The CTP would be collecting the 96 discriminated signals from each DCRB at the same time and streaming this trigger information forward to the global trigger crate.

Hall C “Must for FY11” Projects

1. SOS Removal - $500kSOS work is moved into this year because: a) analysis of SHMS installation schedule shows that things are tight, so any work we can do earlier helps.  b) a trial cut of the SOS shows that cutting the SOS can be done without a large mess, so some chopping up of the SOS can happen in FY11.

$170 is an estimate from Walter Kellner for hiring contractors for cutting and for disposal of radioactive wastes.  $75 is for 2 techs working ~6 months on SOS disassembly. $15 for radcon support.  (should this be no charge?)

NOTE: $135 of this request is for Hall C labor, so requires changing money flavor from COPS salaries to BIA/Capital codes.

Page 16: Physics Division “BIA-Like” Projects L. S. Cardman

Hall C “Must Eventually” Projects

1. Compton and beamline design - $250kAre part of beamline reconfiguration for Compton.

The amounts are based on reasonable estimate of how much labor would be available.  The work this year would also help to solidify overall cost estimates.

2. HMS Wire chambers - $150kHU is building SHMS wire chambers and has offered to build replacement HMS chambers, funded by JLab.  Want to get this started while SHMS chambers in progress to have the benefit of experienced people.  $75K is just a guess about how much could be spent in terms of parts and student labor.

3. DAQ Upgrade - $350kBrad Sawatzky estimates a cost of $350k to upgrade Hall C electronics to multihit/pipeline trigger/electronics.  $100K this year is to get started by joining Hall D Flash ADC purchases.
