q When an object is in motion on a surface or through a viscous medium, there will be a resistance to the motion. This resistance is called the force of friction

q This is due to the interactions between the object and its environment

q Force of static friction: fsq Force of kinetic friction: fkq Direction: parallel along the surface, opposite the

direction of the intended motionn in direction opposite velocity if movingn in direction vector sum of other forces if stationary

Forces of Friction: f

You are walking on a level floor. You are getting good traction, so the soles of your shoes don’t slip on the floor.

Which of the following forces should be included in a free-body diagram for your body?

A. the force of kinetic friction that the floor exerts on your shoes

B. the force of static friction that the floor exerts on your shoes

C. the force of kinetic friction that your shoes exert on the floor

D. the force of static friction that your shoes exert on the floor

E. more than one of these

Frictional forces• When a body rests or

slides on a surface, the friction force is parallel to the surface.

• Friction between two surfaces arises from interactions between molecules on the surfaces.

the object from movingq If increases, so does q If decreases, so does q ƒs £ µs N

Pulling a crate at an angle• How hard should you pull to make it move at a

constant speed?• The angle of the pull affects the normal force,

which in turn affects the friction force.

q A block of mass m1 on a rough, horizontal surface is connected to a ball of mass m2 by a lightweight cord over a lightweight, frictionless pulley as shown in figure. A force of magnitude F at an angle θ with the horizontal is applied to the block as shown and the block slides to the right. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and surface is μk. Find the magnitude of acceleration of the two objects.
