Most people are familiar with the use of physical therapy after a surgery, but physical therapy can help a wide variety of people, whether they have had surgery or not. Physical therapy can help people move better, relieve pain, and improve strength and fitness. It can help those who have health issues that make it difficult to do every day tasks, like walking up stairs or getting up from a chair. Physical therapy can also help an athlete train for a big event or come back from an injury while reducing the risk of recurrence. What will happen at my physical therapy appointment? It depends! That being said, your OSR physical therapist will examine you and talk to you about your daily activities and ask about symptoms. A treatment plan will be made depending on your needs, daily activities, and current level of fitness. Manual therapy, ultrasound, or electrical stimulation may be used for treatments, and you may go through some stretching and weight lifting exercises. Is my physical therapist qualified? All OSR physical therapists are licensed, hold a doctorate or master’s-level physical therapy degree, are expertly trained, and have extensive experience as physical therapists – and they all love what they do! Some OSR physical therapists are certified experts in some areas including orthopedics, certified hand therapy, athletic training and strength training/conditioning. Do I need a referral to see a physical therapist? Typically, no, you do not need a referral to see a physical therapist. Arizona law allows patients direct access to licensed physical therapists for evaluation and treatment. If you plan to use your health insurance, a few plans do require a referral, so it's best to consult an insurance benefits specialist at OSR to help determine your specific benefits for physical therapy. What is physical therapy?
