Textbooks • Primary textbook: Groundwater Hydrology, 3rd Edition by David. K. Todd and Larry W.

Mays • Supplementary textbook:

- Fundamentals of Groundwater by Schwartz and Zhang (2003) - Ground water by Freeze and Cherry (1979)

Course Objective

This course covers the fundamental understanding of groundwater resources/transports, aquifer properties, and well hydraulics. The first half of the course will cover the concepts and theories (Darcy's law) of groundwater flow with introducing aquifer properties and well hydraulics. The second half of the course features practical aspects in the groundwater flows such as topography-driven groundwater flow, groundwater quality, sea-water intrusion, the introduction to the groundwater modeling, and contaminant transport. Course Grading Class participant: 10%; Midterm: 30%; Final exam: 35%; Homework: 25% • Exams (Midterm 30%+ Final 35%=65%): There will be two exams (midterm and final).

These exams consist of multiple-choice questions, short and long answers. The exam material will be taken directly from the lectures and homework assignment.

• Homework (25%): Total 8 to 10 assignments covering lecture materials will hand out during the semester. There will be a penalty in late submission.

• Class participant (10%): The grade will be based upon your attendance. Once in a while, the seminar will be announced in the class if any invited lecturers give presentations related to “Physical Hydrogeology” in a colloquium series of geology department, school of fresh water or other department. If the schedule is allowed, it is encouraged to attend these lectures.

The schedule can be changed! There will be a couple of guest seminars during the class or geoscience seminar scheduled at 3:30 to 4:30 pm in Lapham N 101 Course Policy • Academic Integrity: Plagiarism will not be tolerated in this class and students involved will

receive a zero grade. Severer cases will be submitted to the University for further scrutiny. The scope and disciplines of student academic misconducts are specified in Chapter UWS 14 and UWM implementation provisions (Faculty Document 1686) and http://www4.uwm.edu/secu/SyllabusLinks.pdf. UWM Disciplinary Guidelines can be found in the Office of the Dean of Students, Mellencamp Hall, Rm118.

• Finality of Grade: All grades, once released on D2L or PAWS, are final except in cases of clerical error.

• Late penalty: 10% deduction of your score you would receive with an on-time submission per each full day from the deadline. No score after seven full days from the deadline.
