IntroductionWelcome to the first edition ofthe Active Ageing BristolPhysical Activity Directory forolder people in Bristol.
If you’re looking to become morephysically active but aren’t surewhere to start then this directoryhas the answer, providing you withlots of information on a wide rangeof physical activities which caterfor the beginner, those returning toexercise and those who want totry something different in a fun andsocial environment.
This directory has been producedby Active Ageing Bristol inpartnership with The Care Forumand Well Aware with funding fromBristol Ageing Better and BristolHealth Partners, to provideinformation about activitiesavailable across Bristol. Active AgeingBristolActive Ageing Bristol is acollaboration between Bristol Sport Foundation, The Anchor Society and StMonica Trust. Together theyhave spearheaded one of theUK’s first physical activity and sport initiatives for older people.
The specially targetedprogramme aims to get morepeople from the local area andover the age of 55, involved moreregularly, in physical activity,coaching and volunteering.
Keeping as active as possible isgood for our mental wellbeing aswell as our physical health. Beingphysically active as we get oldercan reduce the risk of usdeveloping depression, heartdisease and dementia. It alsoincreases our social networks,helping to reduce the risk of usbecoming lonely or isolated.

Age-FriendlyPhysical ActivityHub SchemeThe Age-friendly Activity HubScheme was launched byActive Ageing Bristol in July2019. The scheme aims to make physical activity moreaccessible to people aged 55and over, by highlighting andpromoting age-friendly physicalactivity facilities in Bristol.
The scheme was developed inconsultation with a range of 55plus groups and individuals.
What is an Age-friendlyPhysical Activity Hub?
Age-friendly Physical ActivityHubs are leisure centres, gyms,community centres, and otherphysical activity facilities which:
l Provide a positive experiencefor all members andparticipants regardless of age.
l Offer a welcoming andaccessible physical environmentwhich considers the needs of adiverse range of users.
l Offer a range of inclusiveactivities which cater fordifferent needs and levels.
l Acknowledge and encouragethe social element of takingpart in physical activity.
l Use a variety of channels tocommunicate with theirmembers, the local communityand the public.
l Have a dedicated ‘Age-friendly Champion’ on their staff team.
