When you have completed this presentation, you should be able to:

1) Calculate electricity usage and cost2) Define energy conservation3) Identify energy conservation methods that can be used in

the home, school and corporate entities.

QUIZ

INTRODUCTION

Introduction3

It is hard to imagine every day life without electricity. Most of our electricity needs are satisfied by the burning of fossil fuels. Jamaica has no natural oil reserves and imports oil.

Oil accounts for 40% of Jamaica’s import bill. There are several entities that generate electricity but ONLY one entity is licensed for the transmission of electricity. This makes electricity very expensive.

Jamaica needs to implement measures to secure future national energy security. Energy conservation is one such measure which can engage every Jamaican, young and old!

QUIZ

INTRODUCTION

Electricity cost4

Electricity cost = unit cost × kilowatt-hoursTo encourage energy conservation, the unit cost of electricity

varies for different levels of consumption.

QUIZ

INTRODUCTION

Electricity Cost5

In Jamaica , because oil is imported there are additional charges which makes electricity costs for residential and commercial customers very expensive. In 2008, PM Golding announced a 10% GCT charge on electricity consumption over 200 kWh to compel Jamaicans to reduce electricity consumption and save on the country’s import bill.

QUIZ

INTRODUCTION

Why is Energy Conservation important?

Energy conservation includes methods to save or prevent wastage of electrical energy. The Jamaican government has sought to find alternative methods of energy . The LNG (Liquid Natural Gas) project was proposed as a suitable alternative. Natural gas is a fossil fuel and fossil fuels when burnt produce carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. These gases has contributed to global warming and increased our carbon footprint.

Any energy conservation method pursued should look to reduce our carbon footprint which will help to reduce electricity costs for cooling.
