Fraser Lake -a mining town without a mine? By Elaine Storey
Endako Mine announced it was suspending operations in December 2014, and within weeks layed off half their salaried posi-tions. By February 2015, the bulk of the employees received layoff notices which resulted in about 40 workers left on site.
The moly price saw no recovery in the months since the first announcement in December and Thompson Creek Metals was left to declare on June 1st, that En-dako was placed on Care and Maintenance.
Jacques Perron, President and Chief Exec-utive Officer of Thompson Creek com-mented in his June 1st, statement, When
we announced our decision to place En-dako Mine on temporary suspension as of year-end 2014, we had hoped for some recovery in the molybdenum market. Nonetheless market conditions have re-mained weak through May and are likely to
remain so for the foreseeable future. The current and expected moly price cannot support profitable operations at Endako Mine and as a result we believe the best course of action is to place the Mine on care and maintenance. We will continue to closely monitor market conditions and re-evaluate the status of the Mine as mar-ket conditions warrant.
The announcement, which is to take effect on July 1st will result in the termination of approximately 270 employees who will now receive their severance and any other payouts due them. For most of the em-ployees who haven't worked since Febru-ary, this news isnt a shock. And when the
Union held an informative meeting on Sun-day June 14, at least one hundred former
workers were present to get the facts on severance and EI and how to make the most of their payouts.
Endako Mine has been in operation since 1965, and experienced strikes and a shut down during that time. Over its 45 years, they have paid millions of dollars to the village in taxes and have employed thou-sands of workers. In Dec 2014, the mine was providing direct employment to 420 workers with indirect employment to an-other 600. Fraser Lake was selected by the mine to be their townsite in 1965. And through their development, Fraser Lake became an Instant Town.
Despite the rich logging industry in the area, Fraser Lake was often referred to as a mining town. During previous downturns, people waited until the dust settled, know-ing the rich ore body was worth the wait. When the mine completed their $650 mil-lion mill expansion in 2012, it was to mod-ernize the site for ore production for an-other 18 years
Lets hope for moly prices to rebound soon so Fraser Lake can get back its status as
being a mining town.
Trent & Karen, Jolene & Dave, Donya & Sean, Elizabeth & Brian, Jennifer & Aaron, Kathy & Craig, Doug & Michelle, Julain, Sylvia, Rene, Lori, Alisa, Trish, Justine, Michelle, Shelley, Kia, Alynna, Alan, Chelise... 27 mud-happy runners make the finish line at the Mudd, Sweat & Tears event in Prince George June 13.

The goal wasnt to win but to get each team member through the
mud & sludge and over the walls ...together Twenty-seven local athletes ranging in age from the early 30s to the sixties, participated in an endurance grind in Prince George on Saturday June 13 at the Otway Nordic Ski Trails. The entry fee got you a t-shirt, a chance to shinny on your belly in the mud and a can of beer at the finish line.
The Mudd, Sweat & Tears inaugural event was enjoyed by 1300 fun loving people from all around the central interior. The eight kilometre course was built with obstacles to challenge the strength and endurance of all its participants.
The over two hour course (much of the time it was raining) included monkey bar lad-ders, wooden climbing walls, rope climbs, tire drags, a log carry, muddy crawls under barbed wire, a swim through a swamp, slithers over gravel grown greasy with endur-ing rain and a small jolt of electricity just to keep you fired up and moving.
Many of the participants from Fraser Lake are members of Donya Nicols Boot Camp. They meet
twice a week and toss tires and slog up hills running and riding bikes all year round in all weather. They meet on Mon. & Wed. and practice in Donyas back yard because Donya makes strenuous exercise. well, FUN! says one participant who still has bruises on her knees some two weeks
after the event.
Team Ass, Sweat & Beers help Alisa over one of the many walls on the obstacle course
Under the wire and through the mud Good luck to this years

May 27 we had green onions & some radishes out of the garden and boy do they ever taste good! Everything seems to be doing great so far.
Ah yes....this is the time of year when you notice that everyone is wearing the same perfume...."Bug Dope!" Boy oh boy are the Black Flies ever hungry! Darn things, if there is one within twenty miles, it will find me!
Rita Hiatt & Jenny Stringer have left for Quesnel for a driving competition/clinic. We know they will both do well!
The hay fields are heading out really early this year, probably have to start making silage soon.
You know I got these little chicks, and ....the other day I went out to close the chicken house door at night and found eleven missing!....I about had a bird! Well, Walter came out to help me search and we found them behind a piece of plywood all huddled together...WOW was I ever relieved! But in our search several had escaped back outside so Walter says: "You go and bring the chicks in & I'll gather the eggs." There are two eggs. I herd the chicks in & Walter says: "Here you hold the eggs while I get the door shut."...Then he shoved his thumb through one egg and handing me the other I dropped it!...No eggs for breakfast tomorrow I guess! LOL! Yup, "life in the fast lane sure can take its toll!"
Our grandson Clinton came up from McBride to help fence and clear some trees & shrubs in order to make more pasture. They also got the Gator fixed so I'll be able to do all sorts of things now...like haul dirt & other goodies!
Ray Steiner & his crew got the hayshed finished, it will hold five hundred plus bales so that will sure be nice not to have to tarp them any-more! A great building, looks good, thanks fellas you did a fine job!
Had occasion to go to Prince George last week and couldn't believe the amount of weeds along the right of way! WOW! It is disgusting, I thought that the government took care of the noxious weeds?...Should have known better I guess! The Orange & Yellow Hawkweed are spreading like wild fire, soon we will be over taken with them.
The birds are all getting feed for their little ones now, lots of them bring their young to the feeders...nice to watch! We have, for the first time an American Gold Finch pair nesting here, haven't seen their young yet. The Canada Geese and Sandhill Cranes are bringing their young out, they are all sure cute! Three pairs of Evening Grosbeaks are starting to bring their young to the feeders too, the male looks after the baby male & the female looks after the female young...interesting.
Joe & John Steiner were approached in the late fifties by Bill Richmond, the famous Game Warden at the time to see if they'd be interested in getting a Guide Territory. Bill & Joe were spending the night waiting for beaver to show up and Bill noticed that Joe really enjoyed that kind of thing. Well, one thing led to another and soon the Steiner brothers had their own territory along with John Larson, it was huge, from the Southern Valley south to Francois Lake. At that time it was stocked with hundreds of moose, grizzly bears, black bears all living and prospering together....until the wolves moved in and nearly cleaned out the moose. One summer the wolves were so bad they devoured nearly every calf moose born! One of the first hunters they had was from Washington where he worked for the Boeing Aircraft plant. This fellow suggested they put an ad in the newspaper there because he thought it would bring them a few hunters. That winter Joe answered nearly ninety letters! They were on their way to many enjoyable years of guiding mostly American hunters nearly all took the meat home too. They have lots of hair raising stories to tell about grizzlies...one story in particular was about a huge bear that wanted a moose they had hanging up in camp. He came one night and woke up Joe by flipping the tarp they had over the moose, the fellows managed to scare him away that night and the following night they decided they would get rid of him if he came back. Gordie McNolty was helping them that fall and John, Joe & Gordie positioned their bunks so they could all see outside the tent looking right where the moose carcass was hang-ing. John had taped a flashlight to his gun barrel so they could get a clean shot at the bear. Just minutes after they turned the lights out they could hear the big fellow coming in, thump, thump on the frozen ground. Then, rip, down comes the tarp, the flashlight is turned on and three high powered rifles let fly! When John shot the first time the flashlight blew off the rifle and he had to dive under his cot trying to get the darn thing to shed some light on the subject! Meanwhile, Mr. Grizz is out there tearing up anything he can find and making an awful racket. When all the dust settled the bear is dead, three guides can take an easy breath again as they let out a sigh of relief. The amazing thing about the whole episode is that not one horse tied within feet of the action moved a muscle....and neither did the hunters safe in their bunks!... Joe said he really enjoyed those years guiding and still misses it. Joe's sons, Craig, Clayton & Ray took over the guiding territory and ran it for several years until it was sold this spring to a fellow in Hudson's Hope. The territory had been in the Steiner family for nearly sixty years! They will all miss the excitement and entertainment of those wonderful years.

Granddaughter of long-time residents is BC Heart Champion
Long time Fraser Lake residents Bob & Jean Fenato submitted the attached information about their 17 year old granddaughter Samantha who has been nominated as the BC Childrens Hospital Heart Cham-
pion.
Samantha was born with respiratory disease. Her right ventricle did not pump efficiently and it was discovered she had a rare congenital heart defect called Ebsteins Anomally.
Samanthas heart stabilized but she was in and out of Childrens Hos-
pital repeatedly over the years. When she was nine, mom Deborah said Samantha could no longer climb stairs or run.
With much support from friends and family Samantha received life-altering heart surgery and returned to being a normal active child. A few years later, Samantha developed Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of her illness.
Counsellors were able to assist her with the distress, and now the healthy teen not only wants to share her story with others, but would like to pursue a career in either cardiology or psychiatry.
Samanthas full story can be found at www.bcchf.ca/CPhasheart
