AUTOTROPHIC NUTRITION
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
AUTOTROPHS
Auto= SELF Troph= NOURISH
Autotrophs
are
PLANTS
AUTOTROPHS:
•Organisms that can
make their own food
•Also called PRODUCERS
•Examples:
flowers, plants,
trees, fruits,
vegetables
HETEROTROPHS:
•Hetero = OTHER
•Organisms that cannot make
their own food, they need to
consume it
•Also called CONSUMERS
Examples: animals,
fungus, some bacteria
Types of AUTOTROPHIC NUTRITION
•PHOTOSYNTHESIS: light energy
from the sun is changed into
chemical energy in the form of
glucose in plants
CHEMOSYNTHESIS: process by
which some organisms, like certain
bacteria, use chemical energy to
produce carbohydrates
formula for PHOTOSYNTHESIS
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
CHEMICAL FORMULA FOR
PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Oxygen
Summary of Photosynthesis:
Light energy is absorbed by
the CHLOROPLAST
and is used to make oxygen
and (C6H12O6) GLUCOSE
from the raw materials of CO2
and H2O
GLUCOSE
provides all of
our cells with
energy
C6H12O6
PROCESS OF
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
1.Sunlight is made up of many
different colors of light.
2.These colors make up the visible
light of the ELECTROMAGNETIC
SPECTRUM
PROCESS
1.There are
7 colors in
the spectrum
ROY G BIV
REDORAN
GEYELLO
WGREEN
BLUEINDIG
OVIOLET
PROCESS
1.RED and BLUE wavelengths
are the most effective colors of
light for photosynthesis 1.CHLOROPHYLL is a green
pigment in plants that
absorbs the light that is
needed for photosynthesis.
WHERE DOES IT OCCUR?
•in the LEAF of the plant, there are
organelles called
CHLOROPLASTS
FIRST REACTION
•Takes place in the GRANA or
THYLAKOIDS
•These reactions are called LIGHT
DEPENDENT or
PHOTOCHEMICAL
Two sets of reactions take place in two parts of
the chloroplast
FIRST REACTION
•In this part of the chloroplast, light
splits water (H2O) into
HYDROGEN And OXYGEN
•The HYDROGEN stays inside
the chloroplast but the OXYGEN
leaves the plant and this is the
oxygen that we breathe in
SECOND REACTION
•The second reaction takes place in
the STROMA (LIQUID part of the
chloroplast)
•This is where the CALVIN CYCLE
takes place. It is also known as
LIGHT INDEPENDENT, or DARK
REACTION.
SECOND REACTION
•Here CARBON DIOXIDE
combines with HYDROGEN from
the light reactions to make
GLUCOSE
•The glucose is stored in the
plant for use as energy for life
processes.
