CONTEST AREA NAME: Photography

CONTEST AREA NUMBER #: 54

LEVEL: Post Secondary

DURATION OF CONTEST: 4 Hours

LOCATION: College of North Atlantic Prince Philip Drive Campus

1. CONTEST INTRODUCTION

1.1. Purpose of the Challenge. The Skills Canada Provincial Photography Competition is designed to test student’s knowledge in the areas of photography, at the same time, prepare them for the Skills Canada National competition. 1.2. Skills and Knowledge to be tested. Students will be expected to showcase their skills and knowledge in the following areas:

• Composition: visual elements, style, balance and harmony, framing, Depth of Field (DoF)

• Technical: focus, exposure, contrast, use of light, tonal range • Impact: overall impression of the photograph, tells a story, the emotion, meaning • Adherence to theme

1.3. Duration of Contest

• 7:30am – 8:30am Student Registration in front Lobby • 8:30am – 9:00am Student orientation in Classroom • 9:00am – 1:00pm Contest Period (4 hours in total)

2. CONTEST DESCRIPTION

2.1. List of documents produced and timeline for when competitors have access to the

documents.

DOCUMENT DATE OF DISTRIBUTION VIA WEBSITE Pre-Competition Photo Submission January 14, 2020 2.2. Tasks that may be performed during the contest Students will be asked to submit a total of seven (8) photos over the course of the competition, broken down by four tasks. They will have four (4) hours to complete the four

tasks described as follows:

Task #1 – Documentary Photography

Students are to provide three (3) documentary photographs of the various competitions taking place on campus, at the annual Skills Canada Newfoundland and Labrador Secondary / Post-Secondary Competition.

• Photos in this task are allowed to be edited in software. • Do not submit more than one photo per competition area, all three photos should

be from unique competition areas (i.e. do not submit three photos all from baking).

• Students are required to save their photos in JPG format, and with the following file names: lastname_task1_01.jpg, lastname_task1_02.jpg, lastname_task1_03.jpg

Task #2 – Personal Project Students are to provide a series of three (3) NON-EDITED photographs depicting a theme of their choosing.

• The three-image series will be viewed, judged and marked as a collective. • Photos submitted in this task must be NON-Edited and in RAW format. • Photos must be submitted with the following file names: lastname_theme_task

2_01, lastname_theme_task 2_02, lastname_theme_task2_03 (extensions will be decided by your camera (eg. Canon uses CR2, Sony uses ARW, Nikon uses: NEF)

Task #3 – Mystery Object

Students are required to submit one (1) photo of a mystery object.

• Students are challenged to create a photograph with no preparation or

foreknowledge of the subject. (Supplied to students at beginning of competition)

• All students will receive the same object to photograph.

• The photograph submitted is required to contain the mystery object as the main

subject or major contributing element to the subject.

• The photo must be shot on campus within competition areas.

• The photo can be edited in software, and must be submitted in JPG format with

the file name: as follows: lastname_mystery_task3.jpg

Task #4 – Studio Portrait

Students are required to take an in studio portrait of a model. The photo must be shot

in RAW, students will submit the one (1) unedited RAW and one (1) final edited jpg

versions of their submitted photo.

• The model will be supplied by Skills Canada NL, all students will photograph the

same model.

• A backdrop with stands will be provided, along with three studio strobes including

modifiers and light stands. Remote triggers will be supplied to control and fire

the strobes.

• No full-length shots, this is a ¾ portrait from waste up.

• At orientation, students will randomly be selected to determine the order of

which they will shoot. Students will have 25 minutes of available studio time.

• Photograph must be named as follows: lastname_portrait_task4.jpg

3. EQUIPMENT, MATERIAL, CLOTHING

3.1. Equipment and Material supplied by Skills Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador

• Classroom setting with chair and desk space for students to work. • Power outlet to plug in a Laptop, PC, battery charger.

3.2. Equipment and Material Competitor must supply:

• Computer or Laptop with Photo editing software (i.e. Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop recommended or equivalent).

• Digital Camera – Must be DSLR or equivalent. Require camera to shoot in RAW and JPG modes, as well as ability to shoot in Manual (i.e. student can choose shutter speed, aperture and ISO settings). SmartPhone, Tablets and Point and Shoot cameras not allowed.

• Camera’s USB Cable and/or Card Reader • Students can bring a number of different camera lenses of their choice. • Fully Charged battery and Charger • Memory Card for your camera • Thumb (USB) drive to backup images

3.3. Optional Equipment and Material Competitor must supply:

• External flashes with modifiers • Tripod or Monopod • Reflectors • Light Meter • Wacom Tablets

3.4. Required clothing (Provided by competitor)

• No open toe footwear (i.e. sandals) allowed due to safety precautions.

4. SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

The health, safety and welfare of all individuals involved with Skills Canada NL are of vital importance. Safety is a condition of participation and shall not be sacrificed for the sake of expediency. At the discretion of the judges and technical committees, any competitor can be denied the right to participate should they not have the required proper safety equipment and/or act in an unsafe manner that can cause harm to themselves or others.

4.1. No Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required for the Photography area. However, there may be areas during the event that require guests to wear PPE, i.e. a carpentry demonstration may require guests to wear safety glasses, which will be handed out at the location. Students will be required to wear the PPE equipment as identified for those areas before proceeding.

5. EVALUATION/JUDGING CRITERIA

5.1. Point breakdown POINT BREAKDOWN /100 Three (3) Documentary Photos with Edits allowed /30 Three (3) Personal Project NON-EDITED Photos /30 One (1) Mystery Object with Edits allowed /20 One (1) Studio Portrait /20

5.2. Point breakdown • Photos will be judged based on adherence to theme, use of composition, technique

(good use of shutter speed, aperture, ISO), and overall creativity.

6. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION 6.1. Tie (No ties are allowed)

• No ties are allowed at the Skills Canada Provincial Challenge. Ties will be broken by the higher creativity mark.

6.2. Competition rules

• Photography competitors are not to interfere with students taking part in other competitions.

• Photography competitors are not permitted to leave the building, and are to stay in the competition areas.
