Inordertotakegreatphotosyouneedtounderstandalittlemoreaboutyourcamera.Doreadyourinstructionleafletbecausethisgivesyougreatinsight.Payparticularattentiontothemanualsettings.Automaticsettingsareplacedondigitalcamerasbecausepeoplewanteasyphotographyandmanufacturershavegiventhemthat.However,factorysettingsfortakingaphotographon“Automatic”maynotactuallygiveyouthequalityofimageyouareseeking.“Automatic”isstandard.Doyouwanttobeastandardphotographerordoyouwanttolearntogobeyondstandardandbecomeagreatphotographer?

Theaperturedecidestheamountoflightthatpassesthroughthelens.Ifyouputmorelightthrough,yourimagemaybecomeoverexposedifthesettingisincorrect.Ifthesettingistoolow,theimagemaybeunderexposed.Theape.Forexample,doyouwantthesubjecttostandoutfromthebackground?Doyouwantthebackgroundtobeinfocusaswell?Anapertureoff5.6isadaylightsettingthatallowsforgreatlight.It’sarelativelysmallopeningofthelenstoletthatlightintocreatetheimage.Whatabouttheothersettings?Whataretheyallabout?

Youcanseethatatthehighestaperture,therewouldbealotoflightenteringthecamera.Youmayuseasettingthatgivesthisamountofopeningwhentakingphotosinadarkplace,toavoidtheuseofflash.Thenightsky,perhapsorfireworksmayrequirethisamountoflight,thoughremember–thelongerthelensisopenlikethis,themoreopportunitytocamerashastoshake.Forthiskindofimage,youwouldneedtouseatripodbecausehandshakemeansoutoffocusimages.Totherighthandsideoftheimageabove,youseeasmallopening.Onahotsunnydaywithperfectlight,thiswouldbeused,butyoudoneedtoexperimentwiththeotheraperturessothatyouknowwhatyourcameraiscapableofdoing.

ISO

AnothersetofnumberswhichyouwillseeonadigitalcameraistheISO.Thisnumberdetermineshowquicklytheimagewillbetaken.Forexample,youmaywanttheaperturesetsothatthelensonlyopensalittlebit,buttheISOwilldeterminethelengthoftimethatthelensstaysopen.Intheolddays,photographersusedtohavetobuyfilmofdifferentspeedstohelpwithdifferentsituations.HighspeedfilmwasusedforthoseimageswhichwereinmotionwhilestandardISOfilmwasokayforeverydayshots.Now,thisadjustmentisbuiltintothecamera.

Thus,youcanseefromthisdemonstrationthatinalowlightsituation,youneedtouseamid-rangeISOtogetallthedifferentelementswithinthephotographinfocusandexposedfortherightamountoftime.ForthisparticularimageanISObetween50and100isidealbecausebelowthat,youloseskydetailandabovethat,theimagebecomestoodark.

WhenyouunderstandaboutISOandfstops,youareonyourwaytotakinggreatimagesbutthatdoesn’tshowyouthedifferenttechniquesthatareusedtocreatethosesuperimagesandthat’swherethisbooktakesyou.Greatphotographersusedifferenttechniquestogaingreaterimpactimagesandit’snotenoughtosimplytakeaphotograph.Onceyouknowhowtoemploythesetechniques,youwillgetreallygoodatunderstandingyourcameraandproducingfineimages.

Chapter2–ImportantPortraitPhotographyTechniques

Youmayhaveexperiencedaphenomenoncalled“redeye”andthisiscausedwhentheflashofthecamerareflectsinthesubjectofthephotograph’seyes.Flashisn’tthebestwayoftakingimages,unlessperhapsyouhaveastudioandhavecompensatedforthatflashwithdifferentlightingtechniquesthatbouncethatlightandhelpittofallintherightdirection.

Oneofthemostimportantaspectsofafaceistheeyes.Unfortunately,duetodisappointingresultswithredeye,amateurphotographersseemtoavoiddirectnessinanattempttoavoidredeye.However,straightonimagesthatdofocusontheeyeshavemoreimpact.Autofocuspointswhichyouseewhenyoulookintoyourcameraviewfinderaretheretohelpyou.Ifyouweretosetoneoftheseabovetheeyeandthenfocusinontotheeye,youshouldhaveabsolutelyperfectfocusontheeyeofyoursubject.

Onmanycamerasyouhaveapointwhereyoucanholdtheshutterreleasebuttondownacertainamountbeforeactuallytakingtheimage.Usethistoyouradvantage.Iftheimageisn’tperfect,pressthisandrecomposeyourimageuntilyouarehappywithitandthenpressthebutton.Voila!Youhaveperfectfocusontheeyes.Thisbringsasubjecttolifeandmakesthemlookstunning.

Focusonspecificpoints

Thereisawholedepthofinformationinsomeone’seyes.Lookatthisimage.Ofcourse,youarenottakingapicturesolelyoftheeye,buttheeyeexpressionsgiveyourphotographabetterpresentation.

Nowlookatawholeportraitthatgivesequalemphasisontheeyesandyouwillseewhythisworkssowellinphotography.Theeyesinthispicturearestunningandyetthecomposureoftheportraitiscomplete.

Asettingoff5.3wasusedforthisimagewithanISOof400.Lookhowthisallowsthefacetobetotallyinfocuswhilethebackgroundisobscured.It’sacleverlychosenbackgroundtoblendinwiththeimageratherthandistracttheeyeoftheviewer.

UsingAperturePriority

Unfortunately,manymoderncamerashaveanautomaticsettingandusersgetcomplacent.However,ifyoumoveyourdialtoAorAV(dependingonyourcamera’slayout)youputthecameraintoaperturepriorityandthatmeansyougettochoosethefstopandtheISOandthatputsyouincontrolofyourcamera.Youneedtoplayaroundwiththisaseachcameraisdifferentandthisusuallyshowswhenyoupresstheshutterreleasealittle,butnotfully.It’simportantbecausewhenyoucansettheapertureandhavebecomeaccustomedtothesettings,youcandecidehowmuchofyourimageisinfocusorfallswithinthedepthoffield.Thatmeansthatyoucanalsodecidewhetherbackgroundsneedtobefuzzy.Itoftenhelpsthephotoiftheyareasyoucanseefromthelastimageshown.

Depthoffieldnarrowswhenyoumovetowardyoursubjectandthisisimportantwhenlearningtousethecorrectsettings.Whatyoudon’twantwithportraitsistheedgesofthesubjectbecomingblurred.Experimentingwithyourcamerasettingsisvitaltoshowyoutestimagesofdifferentsettingssothatyouinstinctivelyknowwhatdepthoffieldworksforyourimage.Remember,youcan’tseedepthoffieldwhenyoulookthroughtheimage.It’sinstinctiveanditcanalsobelearned.

Bouncingnaturallight

Ifyoucan’taffordastudio,whynotmakeuseofwhatnaturegivesyou.Naturallightisawonderfulgifttothephotographer.Ifyousityourmodelinapositionwherethenaturallightfallsontohis/herface,youcanbouncethatlightusingareflectorinsilver.Whysilver?Thefactisthatthisgivesfarbetterresultsthanotherreflectorsbecauseitgivescrispsharpimagery.Thesearerelativelyinexpensiveandshouldbeincludedinyourkitifyouwanttodoportraitphotography.

Youcanevenuseyourtripodforthiswiththerightfixingssodoaskatyourphotographicretailerwhatdifferentreflectorsareavailable.Whatkindofimagescanbetakenusingareflector?Lookathownaturallightmakesanimagedramaticandyouwillseethatthequalitiesareworthstrivingfor.

Naturallighthelpstoproducedramaandfortheskin,itcanmakeskinlookflawlesslybeautiful,soit’samuchmoreforgivingkindoflightthanbrightstudiolights.

SoftandFeminine–Overexposuretechniques

Sometimeswhenyoutakephotosofwomenorchildren,overexposureisyourfriend.Whatyouaredoingbyover-exposingisallowingmorelightontotheimage.Thus,it’salittlemoreforgivingandcangetyousomegreatresults.IfyouhavePhotoshop,youcanaddfiltersbeforeprintingandtheimageswillbesuperb.

Thisimageisoverexposedbutthisisintentional.Lookhowitmakesthefeaturesofthefacestandout.Thistypeofphotographycanbeextremelyflatteringandusesthemanualsettingsonthecameratofoolthecameraintothinkingthatthereislesslightthanthereactuallyis.Thus,thecameracompensatesandthisistheendresult.

Whatalotofpeopleareafraidofwiththeirdigitalcamerasisthisexperimentation.Unfortunately,theLCDscreenonthecameraisnotthatgoodatassessingthequalityoftheimage,sotrydifferentsettings,notingdownwhattheseare.Anotebookisyourbestfriendwhenitcomestolearningphotographybecauseyoucanthenrepeatthetechniquesthatyoulearninamuchlesshitandmissway,usingthesettingsyouknowwillgiveyoutheresultsthatyouareseeking.

Thepictureabovewastakenwithalenswhichhasa55mmfocallengthandthesettingsusedonaCanoncameraweref/7.1andanISOof200,whereasunderthiskindoflightconditiononemightusuallyusealowerfstopsetting.Thatlittlebitofoverexposure

Chapter3–TechniquesForMacroPhotography

Anyonewhoownsacamerawillhavetriedtotakecloseupphotographsofflowersandinsectsbecauseit’sgreattobeabletouseamacrolensandtogetsuchgreatdetail.Somecamerashaveabuiltinmacrofeatureandyoumaynothavetrieditouttoitsfullestcapacity.It’sgreatfunbecauseitreallydoesputyourphotographicskillstothetest.

Othercamerashavedetachablelensesandyoucanreplacethestandardlensforamacrolens.Thesewillofcoursebemuchmorecontrollablethanbuiltinmacroswhichareonazoomlensbecauseyouhavemorecontroloverthefocusofthecamera,whereasonamacroextratoazoomlens,youdon’thavethatflexibility.Yousimplygetclosertoyoursubjectandtakethephotowhenyouthinkthatitisinfocus.

Sowhatwouldyouuseamacrolensfor?

Themacrolensletyougetcloseupandpersonalwithnature.However,therearelimitationsbecauseyoucan’talwaysseethataccuratelyinyourLCDscreenexactlywhatitisthatyouarelookingat.Thus,useyourviewfinderforthecompositionoftheimagesasthisisalotmoreaccurate.Italsogivesyougreatinformationonyoursettingsandyoucantrydifferentanglestogetthelightrightonthepicturesthatyoutake.

Doyouremembertherulesofcomposition?Compositioncountsalotwhenyouaretakingmacroimages.It’snotenoughtoseethedetail.Youneedtocomposeit.Oftenpeoplemakethemistakeoftakingimagesonmediumqualitysettingsandthencropthem.The

problemwiththisisthattheimagealreadyhaslesspixelsthanaqualityimageandwhenyoucropit,youmakethenumberofpixelsevensmallerandcangetalotofnoiseorgraininyourphoto.Thus,it’sworthsettingthecameratothebestqualityofimagethatyoucangetwhenworkingwithmacroimagesandposingyourcamerajustrighttogetcompositionstraightaway.

Macrolensversuszoommacro

Ifyourlensdoesn’tgiveyou1:1imagesofwhatyousee,it’snottruemacro,butthatdoesn’tmeanyoucan’tgetreasonableshots.Mostzoommacrosarealittlelikethiswhereasifyouwanttotakeyourmacrophotographyreallyseriously,youneedaseriousmacrolens.

Tubes

Ifyouwanttoextendthecapabilityofamacrolens,andhavedetachablelenses,thentubesmaybetheanswer.Theseareattachedtothecameraandthenthelensismountedonthem.Thisgivesyouthelengthoflensthatyouneedtogetupcloseandpersonalwiththethingsthatyouarephotographing.

Closeupfilters

Imagineamagnifyingglassandwhatyoucanseewhenyougetupclosetosomething.Youcangetcloseupfilterswhichmagnifywhatyousee.Theseareokayfortakingphotographsofsubjectswhicharestillbutarenotthebestbetformovingsubjects.Inthecaseofmovingsubjectssuchasdragonflies,youwouldbebetterusingamacrolensalthoughcangetawaywithazoommacroifyoucancatchthemwhentheyarestatic.

Thelensneeded

Thereisabsolutelynodoubtthatazoomlensisyourbestbetforactionshots.Basically,thewaythatactionshotsaretakeniseitherfromastaticviewpointwherethecameraisfocuseduponasetspotortheycanbetakenbypanningtheactionandchoosingtheappropriatemomenttotaketheshot.

Personally,Ipreferpanningwithareasonablylargetelephotolensbecausethere’slesshitandmisstoit.Althoughyoumayanticipatethattheactionmayhappenatasetpoint,oftenyourpicturesaredisappointingbecauseoflackofpreparationofthecameraandthespeedofthesubjectsbeingshot.

Onethingforsureisthatwhenyouaretakingsportsimages,youneedtogetupcloseandpersonalwiththeaction.Forexample,ifyoucangetintothepitsfordragracingyouwillseemuchmorethanyouwillfromaspectatorseat.Theseactionshotscanbetakenasthedragracertakesoffandtherearesomewonderfulphotoopportunitiesatthestartingline,thoughdoexpecttobreatheintheatmosphereoftheevent.

Inthisimage,thecarlooksprettystaticbutwhatthephotographerwasafterwasthewheelskidatthebeginningoftherace.Tomaketheimagemorespectacular,alittlemorecompositionmayhavegiventhephototheedge.

Panningtechniques

Youdoneedatelephotolensforgoodpanningofdistantshots.Thewaythatthisworksisthatyoufocusuponthesubjectandgetyoursettingsrightforthekindoflightthatyouareencountering.It’sagreathelptoaphotographertohavealightmeterbecausetheycanusethisthelengthoftheracecoursetoseeiftheangleatwhichtheyaretakingtheimageallowsthemthecorrectlightorwhethertheyneedtomovetoanotherspot.Focusthecameraonthesubject.Asthesubjectstartstomove,movethecamerasothatthesubjectisalwayscentralintheviewfinder.Whentheappropriatemomentcomes,snaptheshot.

Therearevarioustechniquesusedtogetgreatimagesofchildrenandbabies.However,it’sunfortunatethatmanypeopledon’tusegoodtechniqueandtendtousepointandclick.Ifyoureallywanttocapturethemomentperfectly,youneedtolearntechniquesthatwillhelpyoutodothis.

BabyPhotos

Thisphotographofababyisanexcellentexample.Theposeoftheimageisperfect.Thereisalittleover-exposureintentionallyusedtoemphasizethewhite,sothatthefaceandfeaturesofthebabyarethefocalpointoftheimage.Thisisthequalityyoushouldbeaimingatwhentakingbabyphotosbecauseit’sexceptionallygoodqualityandhelpsparentstopreservethosememoriesinpicturescertainlyworthframing.

Atthisage,youareprettylikelytogetcandidshotswithouttoomuchhassle.Babiescanbeposedeasilyandtheydon’tplayuptothecameralikechildrenwhoareolderdo.Thesettingofwhiteusedinthisimage,forexample,maketheskinofthechildthefocalpoint.Youareinstantlydrawnintothefacialexpressionbecauseofthehatplacement.Goodcompositionisallabouthavingtherightprops.

ActionPhotos

Takingimagesofchildreninactionisfun,butdon’tletthemknowyouaretakingthem.Theproblemisthatkidswillplayuptothecameraandtheresultingimageswon’tgiveatruepictureofthejoythekidswerehavingplayingwiththeirfriends.Youneedtoinvestinagoodtelephotolensbecausethisputsdistancebetweenyouandthesubject.

Thispicturewastakenatadistanceonabrightdayandthephotocapturestheaction.Simplypaninonthesubjectandwaituntiltheactionisjustwhatyouwanttocapture.Here,again,thecompositionwasfabulous.Thecontrastbetweenthechild’sattireandtheseaissuperbandthewaveswerecaughtinfullfocusbyhavingasettingthatallowedfulldepthoffield.

Photographsofchildrencanbeveryeasytotakeifyouwaitforopportunities,butbepreparedforfrustration.Thatbeamingsmilethatsaysthechildishappymaynotcomeforawhile.Thatposeyouoncesawandwishedyouhadcapturedcan’tbeposed.Youneedtositwithyourcameraandwaitformomentssuchasthistohappenagain.

Getyourcamerasetupwithatelephotolens.Ifyouarewatchingachildplayandwantgreatdetail,whynotuseyourtripod?Thisgivesyouonelessthingtothinkaboutasthecameraheightandstabilityissortedoutinadvance.Watchtheaction,tryzoominginandouttogetthebestcomposition.Evenasmalltripodisusefulinasituationsuchasthis

becauseofitsportability.Youcanmovetoabetterpositiontotaketheimageifthelightisn’tperfect.

Perspective

Thetechniqueofusingperspectivereallyhelpswhentakingimagesofkidsorsmallpeople.Yousometimesneedtogetdowntotheirleveltogetthebestcloseupimages.Childrenonabeach,forexample,couldbeshotfromadistancebylyingdownonabeachtowelandusingasmalltripod.Thatway,youareattheirlevelandseethingsfromachild’sviewpoint.Youwouldbesurprisedjusthowmuchdifferenceitmakeswhenyouareabletoseethingsfromtheirperspective.

Alternatively,youcouldtaketheimagefromabovethechild,ifyouwantacloseupthat’sasstunningasthisone.Thechoiceisyours.
