TYPES AND USES OF PHOTOGRAPHY Niamh Hills

PORTRAIT Portrait Photography is one of the most common forms of photography. A person’s face is usually the main focus of portrait photography, however the entire body and the background may be included.

An example of a famous portrait photographer is Annie Leibovitz. She photographed John Lennon on the day he was assassinated and her work was used on two record albums by John Armatrading. Leibovitx has photographed many celebrities, presidents and other cultural icons.

Her first job was on the Rolling Stone magazine back in 1970. She has also worked with Vanity Fair and Vogue. Annie Leibovitz portraits are always recognizable as they capture a beautiful and vulnerable state.

This photo of Leonardo Dicaprio was photographed by Leibovitz for Vanity Fair’s January 1998 issue. This was just before the release of Titanic.

Miley Cyrus was photographed at the age of 15 by Leibovitz for Vanity Fair. This causes a lot of controversy as it was believed to be too risque.

LANDSCAPE A landscape is a section or portion of scenery seen from a single viewpoint. Typically nor people or animals are shown in a landscape, unless they are relatively small in the image. Some photographers argue that the sea coast, the city and man-made structure in general should not be included in a landscape.

Ansel Adams was an American photographer. His black and white landscape photographs have been widely reproduced on calendars, posters, books and the internet. Ansel Adams used a large camera to photograph nature on both a large scale and using close ups. He mainly took photographs in black and white.

COMMERCIAL & ADVERTISING

Commercial and advertising photography is used for promotional purposes rather than making a memory or telling a story as in fine art photography and photojournalism. Commercial photographers take photos of buildings, models, merchandise, artifacts and landscapes which will be used for promotional purposes. An advertising photographer will often specialize in marketing, layout, business management and sales trends.

Alex Koloskov is an American self taught photographer. He specializes in photography for advertising. He has taken photos for product and still life, jewelry, fragrance, cosmetics, food and drink etc.

FASHION Fashion photography is a genre of photography which is dedicated to showing clothing and other fashion items. Fashion photography is most often managed for advertisements for fashion magazines for example, Vogue, Vanity Fair or Elle. Fashion photography has developed its own style in which the clothes and fashion are enhanced by the vision of amazing locations or accessories.

Steven Meisel is just one example of a famous fashion photographer. He has photographed every single cover of Italian Vogue since 1998, as well as every Prada campaign since 2004. His portfolio includes commercial images for clients like Valentino and Versace etc.
