Meet the girls

A Los Angeles Cultural Activity

• I saw a group of girls dressed up in outfits that stood out to me, so I asked if I could take pictures of them

• …They got really into it

• They felt like having a 70’s night out, so they dressed up and went to Moonlight Rollerwayin Glendale, a very old- school rink

• Since the girls were so open to me taking the pictures, I asked them for fun facts about themselves.

• They have known each other for 15 years• They try and do activities like this, where they

dress up every month• They are all 21• Juliana’s mom is a designer and hand makes all

her clothes (including the one her and Jackie are wearing)

• The space is used for anything from dates to birthday parties, to nights out with friends

• The girls said a lot of their friends love to go rollerblading- an activity that seems to be common among kids to teenagers

• There were people of all ages there, mostly children

• There is a concession stand with pizza

• Also an arcade

• The rink would designate certain songs for an all girls skate, or all boys skate.

• As well as songs for only adults, and also kids.

• This roller-rink satisfies this cultures needs by giving people an exciting place to go and spend time together

• Gives them a bonding experience

• A place to dress up and “go back in time”

• It reminded the girls of their childhood

• Oldies music (60’s, 70’s, and 80’s) was playing

• They have nights for specific age groups, and special themes.

• Allowing strangers to have a relaxing, fun experience together

Cultural Rules

• You were not supposed to use your phone on the rink (why some pictures are blurry)

• No speeding

• No hockey stops

• They said they were having a night out with a few girls from their sorority

• Satisfying needs for a sorority as well, allowing them to also have a night out where they can dress up, dance, meet new people, and bond with each other
