Who's to see what's beyond that new door, except many more opportunities to create memories and more stories to tell? Here's to new stories! Dear Sir Manong,

Best wishes on your birthday and retirement from service...

It is such an honor and privilege for me to have known you, and in some way or another, be associated with you as fellow MSUan, Rearguard, 'kababayan,' and servant in the field of the academe, among others.

That you had loftier offers and opportunities outside MSU, economically and otherwise, and that you chose to stick it out with and spend the prime years of your life in MSU, are not only marks of a selfless and noble endeavor, but a clear display of one's sense and understanding of a divine purpose and call, and how it is to spend one's life - gifts, talents, and all, to the maximum. You've been not just an encouragement, not just a spark, but a light in the dark, a showcase, a model of divine goodness, and an epitome of human's best and of a true MSUan.

In many ways, you and ate Dina have been carriers of MSU's ideals of integration and unity, and how it is to make this world a better place to live in. God bless you even more.

For our esteemed Prof. Sarangani who will be retiring two days from now, may I convey the following message: Prof. Datumanong Sarangani is one figure in the university that can't easily be forgotten! His style of teaching (History), coupled with a deep sense of broadmindedness in tackling even the most sensitive of issues, had created a lasting impression on me back in the early '70s. He has indeed done his share in molding thousands of neophytes to become what they are today. He may not be able to remember the names and faces of all his students; but definitely, all of us, who have had a session or two with him, could never forget a teacher called Manong to many. His announcement of retirement should not be taken as a surprise; for, after all of what he has done, he also needs time to rest, ... a time to marvel his accomplishments. Dear Fellow MSUan, Mindanao State University is calling. A call to serve one's alma mater can be answered in many ways. Some, like me, joined the private sector and proceeded to find my luck abroad while others become government workers, researchers, engineers, nurses, doctors, businessmen, bankers, artisan, skilled worker, policemen, soldiers, teachers or professors like Kuya Manong. Some even seek elected office. But regardless of the path chosen, each requires sacrifice. Unfortunately, the support from above for the many men and women who have been called to serve our alma mater was not always there. Sometimes it did happen and sometimes it didn’t. These brave heroes could have been helped to lift MSU up higher as other Universities are lifted up in other places. MSU deserve the help of our Government leaders and all the sectors and stakeholders of the community. Among the turmoil and the political positioning of people, clamoring for the choicest positions, the government officials have lost sight of the end goal—making Mindanao State University a better place for the students, the youth, and the future leaders of the Island provinces, the region and the country. With all these, every few years, there was this constant figure that was there for the administration, the staff, the academics, the faculty, and the students and most of all the community. Fortunately we have DR. DATUMANONG SARANGGANI, who have held the stakeholders of MSU together from its shining moments to its darkest days. Kuya Manong as we fondly call him, unlike others, has not confused service with a career. He knows that when you teach, it is service to the people and the community you are trying to lift up and anybody can make a career out of it if he or she is willing to sacrifice. Another cool thing with Kuya Manong is that he was committed to do whatever it takes. We have seen it in his family life. We have seen his enduring love for his lovely wife Dinah Tejano Saranggani, my kababayan. His devotion to her touched my heart and my respect for him is cemented in stone. I know I don’t only speak for myself but for many, we love him more because of that. So, to kuya Manong, we know that your service for our ALMA MATER is more than enough to give back for what it has given you, and we hate to see you go, BUT because we LOVE you, we sincerely wish all the BEST in the world for you. We thank God and your family for YOU. Sincerely,

Dear Dr. Ben,

Peace be with you!

I read Sir Bob Lim's call for MSUans to share parting words for Dr. Sarangani who will retire this Sept. 17.

He was MSU Main's chancellor when I was president of the Rajah Solaiman Hall in 1990-91. Despite our brief encounters, I can't forget Dr. Sarangani's soft spoken and deep voice, fatherly advice, articulacy on topics and issues, and professionalism as educator. And most of all, as a student-leader at that time, he helped me and Mr. Cosain Mamari, RSH's manager, put up and construct the hollow block fence around the boundaries of RSH. Whenever I got the chance to talk in public, I always remind myself of Dr. Sarangani's public speaking prowess.

"Dr. Sarangani, Sir, you may have forgotten me after 20 years but as a product of MSU, I remember and consider you as one of the most influential persons in MSU. A mentor, worthy to emulate. May the Great Architect of the Universe bless you with long life."

Thanks Dr. Ben and Sir Bob! Godspeed!

Respectfully yours,

Engr. Joel Andante Capalit President, Rajah Solaiman Hall (1990-91)

Sir Ben: pls disregard yong unang pinadala ko. Heto po ang greetings ko -

On your 65th birthday Manong, I have nothing to give but the LOVE that will last, pure and secure. This LOVE will see you through your retirement period, the biggest transition of life when someone in this level experiences vast and various changes sometimes even the strongest is not able to cope. Though many would say you have already almost everything, there is still lacking - the fullness of LOVE. My wish is for you to find the fullness of LOVE who is not only word. Our Scripture names Him, GOD. (GOD is LOVE in truth, GOD = LOVE)

Manong, your soft but loud and clear, most of all lovely voice, enchants me to hear more of your wisdom, courage and self-discipline (I trust you know what they really mean). MSUans, I believe, wants to hear more of you. There is more time now that employment is discharging you of multifaceted functions which you did faithfully as very good steward of everything our Loving Creator showered you. Retirement will bring you to greater heights and dimension - to become closer to us, farther from before. Von voyage!!!!

There's only one Manong in the world. He is the President MSU never had. He will never retire from service for the glory of our Almighty Creator.

Love you po, Lady Iron of QC

hello kuya ben, here is my message for dad manong sarangani. hope you can include it in your compilation. thanks a lot.

i could not think of msu marawi without you and ate dina. every memory that i have of msu, and there are so many (having lived most of my adult life in msu), you are a part of it. even in my personal and family life and even in my children's lives too...thank you for believing in me and encouraging me to get my masters at up diliman. i didn't have enough confidence then but your trust made a lot of difference...you may never had the chance to become msu president, but your influence is much much more because it is not limited by a "term" or by an "administration"--you are simply present in most university affairs -- whether personally invited or sent as a proxy, even at short notice, you seem not mind at all. you have kept yourself untainted by any anomaly all these years. you may not be perfect because nobody is, but your legacy to msu will be part of msu forever, and will be in the hearts of all msuans.. ...we love you dad.. we know it's only your official relationship with msu that is ended.. God willing, we will be seeing more of you and ate dina..... from vic - ethyl and kids (bebong, dandan, jv and abigail)

To Manong Sarangani, Few are the people like Manong, who has endured and contributed so much for MSU. But words and praises are abundant for him for helping make this institution great. I remember him say this phrase: "people come and go but this institution will endure." True, MSU eternally lives in the hearts and minds of all those this institution has touched. For with them, a community has grown - where religion does not matter. Mabuhay ka Manong! and Happy Birthday! Fred M. Honolulu http://www.emindanao.com

Greetings of Peace and solidarity! As a former student leader of MSU (1985 -1992), we used to deal with Sir Manong especially when we had incidents in the campus like kidnapping and killing of students by some disgruntled groups or individuals who were trying to sow havoc and trouble in the campus. During our dialogues at the SLH with Sir Manong (usually in his capacity a an Officer-In-Charge), students were so angry imputing all blames to the Administration for its failure to protect the students. Sir Manong consistently showed his calmness and his sense of accommodation. I never saw him losing control of his temper. The soft-spoken Dr. Manong, for us, is the living example for moral and civil integrity. His love for MSU and his commitment to serve our people is beyond reproach. In retirement, we wish to convey our deep sense of appreciation for his kindness and support to the studentry. Our prayer for his continued good health with more blessings from Allah.

Manila, 16th September 2011 Dear Sir Manong: What a rich model of principles and humility you are, when the world and the environment you live in are crazy with crass materialism and intolerable discrimination. I felt soften and bowed down when I read Bob Lim's curt message and invitation. MSU will surely miss you. I will surely, together with Mrs. Kashim, Palma, miss you, too. Thanks for giving us a living example of a man of thought and ready comfort. Happy birthday sir and may your retirement from government service become an example for our society to reform and advance. Always your students happily, Jo and Palma

Hi Mr. Posadas,

Attached here is a letter which recounts what crossed my mind upon learning that he'd be retiring tomorrow. May you find space for it. By the way, I was once his student in one of his history class for History majors and I was the lone Political Science major on that class, bet he still remembers me. Thank you so much for the information. God bless you.

Truly yours,

Atty. Cheryl Torrecampo Limbing Davao City

DR. DATUMANONG SARANGANI: THE TEACHER; THE MENTOR

He is a man of science, knowledge is his passion, the world is his playground, adventure is his friend, history is his life and he could give life to history but it is always his love which is his home. That is he,the man we all know as Dr. Datumanong Sarangani.

I hope those words were enough to describe the man who had and continuously have inspired the manyyouths who had been fortunate enough to have met, to have been taught of, to have conversed with andeven to have shared a smile with him. I was one of the many fortunate students back then who wereunder his class in History. The simplicity by which he would conduct the classes would lead thepassersby to believe that the discussions were light and dandy. Yet, that was never the case. Every class session is actually an adventure we all await to embark on. Discussions on conflicts between the Jew andthe Arabs would always turn out to be a scientific scrutiny on the root cause of the conflict that we all goback to its inception and to the cradle of civilization. The vast knowledge he imparts to us and hisunselfish sharing of his many exploits and travels in pursuit of knowledge is always a delight to listen to.He never ceased to encourage us to take the risk, to pack our knapsack and venture into the world, just like what he did when he was young wherein he ended up gazing at the Pyramids of Egypt. He wouldpassionately talk of how he was awed with the sight of the towering pyramids as he looked up to it fromthe dessert ground. (I hope, I had fairly recounted his accounts and if I hadn’t then it must be because itwas the impression imprinted in my psyche).

Amidst his very hectic schedule, he would always find time to say hi if he’ll see you at the lobby. And healways remembers your first name which makes you feel comfortable talking to some great personalitylike him. The knowledge that he indeed knows that you are his student is always something that makesyou just glad and honored to have been remembered by someone like him. Perhaps, that is one of the best things about him; he was always cordial, accommodating and kind. He is full of humility that even ifyou’re just his student and he a member of the elite force of the university he would never hesitate to hearyou and he would even stop to chat a while if he’s not in a hurry when you’d see each other on the road oron the lobby. He would gladly share his place to his students for some film viewing of the stories onmedieval times, early civilizations, or stories on Egypt and many other countries with free snacks and delightful stories of him and his spouse, and the many other acquaintances and how they’d come to be.His abode together with his lovely wife is on that patch of green with a miniature golf course reminiscent of a western dwelling where bromeliads and other flowers lined the pathway to their home. Idyllic, peaceful, serene and beautiful, that is how I mostly remembered their home, must be a reflection of theman, of the lovely couple that thrived therein.

I may be at a loss for words as I could not find enough to describe just how wonderful he is, but neverbecause I found him wanting. He is an academician worthy of emulation and even his resonating namecould not equal to the depth and beauty of his character. He is the only intellectual who can eloquently convey all his experience, emotions, and knowledge to those around him. He can fluidly discuss stuff ofhigh intellectual value without any use of a teaching material such as book for reference; he could recount pages of history from his mind that it’s like he was living it and he could pick up the significance of eventhe most mundane things in explaining complicated matters. His face would lit up in a child likeexcitement as he would recount his many travels and he is so free that he just seems to glide even as hetackles and confronts the exacting tasks of being a top ranking official of the University. I could go onand on, and I will just praise him more and more and I will just pause for a moment and then again continue praising him….that is how he is to me, a great inspiration. I must be melancholic now, reminiscing our class, hearing our discussions, remembering my classmates back then; I can still recall afew like Sharon, Ann, Patrick, Amy, but I bet Sir Sarangani remembers all the names of the rest while I

can just remember their face. I still remember, in 2009, amongst the many professors that I had way backin my undergraduate and law studies, it was only him who had asked for my number from a friend just so he can congratulate me for passing the 2008 Bar Exam. I was naturally awed that I did not even knowhow to thank him, for I look up to him and being congratulated by him was such a great honor for me asthe thought of being remembered by someone like him was already an achievement to me. Maybe that isjust an attestation to the fact that he never forgets his students or anyone that he had known whoever he orshe may be. Yet, time must have passed so swiftly that now, just like any man, he has to venture into another phase of his life for the continued growth of his well-being. I hate the word retirement as it signals the end of one’s journey and rest has some more dire underpinnings. Thus, facing a newchallenge, taking a new phase on his life would be more apt to describe his personality and his newundertakings.

My first thought after learning that he would soon severe his ties with the university was actually more offeeling sorry for the next generation of MSUans who would no longer have the opportunity of crossing their paths with him. But then again, there is nothing to feel sorry for, a persona like him would alwaysshine and he would continue to touch the lives of many wherever he will be. He will continue to be an inspiration for us and for the next generation of MSUans who would just even heard of him. Back in theacademy he had touched the lives of the many students and now that he would be again rejoining theworld, he would be blessing the many lives that he is destined to meet. There could be no ending even as he would now retire from his office as he would never cease to be Dr. Datumanong Sarangani. I am surethat he will continue to nurture the soul of those hungry for knowledge and he will not tire in imparting his knowledge to those around him whatever the setting may be. For us, whose lives he had touched, hewill continue to and forever will remain Our Teacher, Our Mentor, and Our Inspiration in exploring theworld and living the life we dreamed of.

To you Sir, Thank you for all the time that you had shared with us, for the knowledge that you hadimparted to us and most especially thank you for all the encouragement and for the inspiration. We aregrateful beyond words to you. Congratulations on your new adventure. We just hope that in the many journeys that you had planned, may the wind, in one of those journeys, toss our sails to you so that ourpaths may cross once more. Until then, many good tidings to you and your family. Sail on Sir, conquer the world once more. We salute you, we are truly proud and happy for you.
