Greener grass for livestock can prove costly By Lisa Douglas, specialist litigation and dispute resolution lawyer practising in and around Clevedon It is a fact of rural life that livestock enjoy escaping from paddocks. However, the opportunity some farm animals take to seek out greener pastures can cause significant damage to the animals themselves, as well as to people and property. Recently, the national media reported that 57 cattle had been killed following a collision involving a train traveling between Napier and Palmerston North . This distressing incident provided a reminder to farmers to keep farm land well-fenced. There have been numerous other instances where the New Zealand courts have faced claims involving farmers paying, sometimes hefty, sums for financial losses caused by failure to keep their farm animals well-fenced. The recent incident is a timely reminder for stock owners here in Clevedon to take reasonable precautions to keep their livestock secured. Broken or hot wire fences adjacent to main roads are most likely to fall short of the reasonable steps that should be taken. And for those moving stock on roads, Beef & Lamb New Zealand provide guidelines for safe work procedures. Clevedon locals can help to prevent harm to animals and to traffic by alerting others when escapee stock are on or near roads via Clevedon/Kawakawa Bay Grapevine on Facebook.

Franklin Local Board Wairoa Team Congratulations to Deputy mayor and Franklin ward councillor Bill Cashmore on being returned unopposed.

He works hard and is always generous with his time, so it’s good to know we have a strong voice on the

governing body.

And speaking of strong voices, Auckland Transport will be sick of hearing from Amanda Hopkins about

potholes, road surfaces and the other issues we hear about. But credit where it is due, senior managers

have talked us through reporting changes designed to make it easy to understand where things sit on the

work programme, and why. That’s important because we all wonder why a problem or something we regard

as a priority isn’t fixed, but there are often good reasons. Our road network is 951km rural and 287km

urban. The urban network has grown 5 per cent in six years, and Paerata, Karaka, Clevedon, Beachlands

and Drury show that won’t stop. The 2019-20 Road Renewals Programme is almost $20 million but in the

last two years 20 per cent of our budget has been used on storm repairs, $4.5 million on retaining walls

alone.

In that budget, repairs at Siberia Hill and at Orere–Matingarahi Rd will cost $1 million, Ardmore Quarry Rd,

McGregor Rd and Laing Road culvert at least another $500,000. Next year about 72 kilometres of our

sealed network will be resurfaced and our 420kms of kerb and channel, some of it added in Beachlands this

year, will be extended. Add in more than 300km of concrete urban footpaths and you begin to see the size

of the task. A lot of effort goes into advocating projects to AT, and we have made some positive steps.

Amanda makes frequent calls to update our contact on road conditions and was pleased to hear

permanent solutions to Siberia Hill, Brookby Road and Whtiford Park Road are planned.

We know Watercare’s work has been frustrating. Contractors hope the three-way system will only be

required for another two weeks. Once they’re clear of the West Road area we’ll be back to a two-way

system, cutting wait times. There were a couple of incidents of the lights losing communication, resetting the

timer. A taller antenna seems to have sorted that, and the green phase has been lengthened to clear more

cars in peak hours

We have endorsed our achievements report measuring how we track against our 2017 board plan goals. It

includes projects and advocacy areas we undertake on your behalf, and highlights gains in Pest Free

Franklin and the Waiuku Trails and Wairoa River Action plans.

The yet-to-open Hunua Trail getting Heartland Trail status last year is singled out as another highlight,

alongside the Wairoa River winning the ‘most improved Auckland river’ category at the New Zealand river

awards.

A new local board plan will be developed next year, offering the opportunity to review outcomes and

priorities with the incoming board. And lastly, isn’t it good to see the fresher, brighter look to the Clevedon District Centre nearing completion?

News from Clevedon School Board of Trustees The three year term of the new Board of Trustees has begun and all the trustees are excited about

the opportunity to get involved with the governance of Clevedon School and making a difference

for our children. Thank you to all those that stood in the BoT election. It is a credit to our school

community that so many parents want to be involved in the governance of our school. The board would also like to take

this opportunity to thank our former trustees: Mel Cleave, Trent Archer, Peter Manderson, Kellie Philpott and Danielle

Wright for their term as trustees, and for all the effort and commitment they have dedicated to Clevedon School.

Our new Board of Trustees are: Hamish Bell (Chair), Megan Harper, Kirsten Davis, Summer Deverell, Paul Gibbard,

Social Auction Results We are sure that all who attended the Social Auction last term would agree that it was a fantastic evening and so inspiring

to see so many generous people in our community who are so enthusiastic about supporting our school. The total profit

from the evening was an incredible $57,000 which was well above our initial target. Thank you so much to the key

organisers: Nick McCaw, Megan Harper, Ismay Johnston, Nicki Henshaw and Danielle Wright who made such an

outstanding event happen. And thank you also to the rest of the community who helped out, donated to the event and

supported the evening...it is all much appreciated.

International Student Exchange On Friday 23rd August we farewelled our first group of exchange students as they returned to China and back to their

school after what can only be described as a wonderful experience here in Clevedon. We had our visitors for four weeks

and thanks to our amazing homestay families, it was a memorable time for all.

Why are we hosting exchange students you might ask?

A large part of our NZ curriculum in schools now is about equipping our students for the life skills and competencies

they will need to be active citizens in the world in the future. We need to prepare them for their future not our past. Why

develop intercultural competence? Intercultural competence is a crucial part of global citizenship education. It

empowers us to relate to people from different cultures in a respectful way, making the most of those differences and

learning to appreciate them.

Enrolments Open It is that time again when we call for parents of students in the wider community who are beginning school soon to come

and see us if you are considering our wonderful school for your children.

We are beginning our planning for the next three years and with all the projected growth in Clevedon we definitely need

to be planning. If you know of anyone with preschoolers, please ask them to contact us to secure their place.

Homestay Hosts Needed We are planning to continue our intercultural exchange programme here at school and make it a regular annual event as

part of our school calendar.

In 2020 we are hoping to take a group of our senior students back to China for an exchange so that our students can

experience what it is like to be immersed in another culture. We can only make this valuable authentic life learning

happen with the assistance of our parents and community.

If you are able to assist us by being a host family in the future please contact the school now so that we can complete all

the administration work and have you on our list. We are hoping to have a bank of about fifty families who will support

this programme in our community - that way we can share the load. There is remuneration for food and board for these

positions. This programme brings in significant revenue to our community and school so if this is a way you can support

us please get in contact.

Ag Day Friday 27th September is our annual Ag Day event here at school. First and foremost, we welcome you all to come and

join us for a great day in the country where we celebrate those traditions which have come from our past. We love to see

our wider community at school. There will be cakes and sweets and grocery raffles aplenty. There will be food and

coffee so if you have a spare couple of hours do come and join us.

If you have the time, and want to help us out on the day please contact Nicci and Fraser on [email protected] or

call us here at school and we will pass on your details to them. We are always in need of stewards, judges, helpers, cake

bakers, sausage sizzlers .. the more the merrier.




School Fencing I am sure you will have all noticed our new school fencing going up around the school. It is looking fantastic and will

provide that ongoing support for us to keep our students safe at all times.

Our gates will be locked throughout the school days so if you need to come to school please do use the front office entry

as that has deliberately been kept open for our visitors and whanau of the school.

We are looking to have our swimming pool fencing replaced as well so it will all match and continue to present our

school as a living vibrant part of our wider Clevedon Community.

Thank you for helping to keep our school a safe place.

Come and Join Us If you are a grandparent, parent, aunt, uncle, retiree who has some time to spare, we are looking for people to come and

help in our junior school. We hear our young students read every day and this is a fun way for you to be involved. We

call it reading mileage as research shows the more children get practice at reading the more improvement they will make.

Call Mandy or Donna at the school office and they will pass on your details to our teachers who will be in touch. We are

excited to welcome you into our school. Come and hear the children read and share a cuppa with us all at morning tea.

Auckland Council are providing free guided walks around community parks. Walk with the local park ranger

through the Clevedon Scenic Reserve on Thursday 19th September, 10am to 12 noon, meet in the carpark, a

good level of fitness and mobility is required.

Some locals are gathering information in support of a Secondary School in the Pohutukawa Coast Area.

Projected numbers of secondary age children in Beachlands, Maraetai and our Wairoa Valley, along with

growing numbers in Papakura High School, Rosehill College and Howick College catchments seem to support a

real need for another Secondary School. There has also been a petition for one organised by locals, see page

17.

Council has approved funds for a Clevedon Village pedestrian crossing, a raised crossing with two pedestrian

refuges with locations to be determined after surveys establish pedestrian desire line

Clevedon roadsides are looking a lot better lately. New contractor Citycare even removes any pieces of rubbish

before mowing, a lot better result.

Some of the Hunua tracks have now been reopened after previous slips and Kauri Protection measures.

Internet Fibre has now been installed to 2 subdivisions along Monument Road, UFB Fibre rollout is still planned

for the 2021 financial year

Progress is being made on the Camp Sladdin track left side. After it’s completion, more work will be done on

the right side, so there should always be one side open for your workout.

As you know, underground water and wastewater services are being installed in our village. The details are

now under Question & Answers on the Watercare website – search the Clevedon Project (part of this is printed

on pages 12 and 13), or you can read all about it at the Clevedon Hub. The cost of wastewater connection to

the front of your property is $15,916 if you register your interest by 30 September 2019, or $23,046 after that

date. Water supply connections are $7,866. Watercare is working with Auckland Council to organise a payment

scheme through your rates bill, possibly payable over 15 years, however this is still a discussion in progress.

Costs connecting your property and disposal of the old septic systems have to be borne by the property owner

however.

These Village Snippet Updates are also provided at the Clevedon Hub, updated daily if necessary. Our Clevedon

Hub is gathering momentum, with several people at once popping in sometimes. It’s turning into quite the

Clevedon Valley Music Foundation Trust News… We hope you have come through the winter well, avoiding the worst of the bugs!

Our next (and final) concert in the 2019 Sunday Serenade series is Adventures and Beginnings - a great

way to launch into Spring. We are thrilled to showcase the phenomenal talent of one of NZ’s most

exciting rising singers, Joel Amosa. Of Samoan-NZ descent, Joel has won the prestigious and highly

contested Lexus Song Quest, and is one of the busiest bass-baritone soloists in the country. Somehow

he has found time in his busy schedule to share his glorious voice with us on Sunday 15th

September at

St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Clevedon – 1.30pm. Also featuring on the progamme will be our

talented young CVMFT Scholarship winners; Mele and Amelia Lataimaumi on violin and cello) - two

Tongan teenage sisters who are soaring ahead in their musical journeys. Gina Sanders (soprano) -

recently returned from another highly successful European concert tour and Kay Shacklock (piano)

complete the impressive lineup. Entrance/Exit donation and a delicious Afternoon Tea is included.

Thank you everybody who attended our AGM Friday 9 August, with lunch and mulled wine. As discussed, the

Clevedon CBA has had another significant year as part of the wider Clevedon community. We thanked

Angela Fulljames, Malcom Bell and Amanda Hopkins of the Franklin Local Board for their continued

Wairoa Valley Business Directory 2020

As you will see in this Round Up, the new printed Business Directory for the wider Wairoa Valley area is now

being put together. Wairoa Valley is a catch-all name for the countryside, mountains and coastal region that

has the Wairoa River at its heart. It includes the villages and settlements of Ardmore, Brookby, Clevedon,

Umupuia Beach, Hunua, Kawakawa Bay and Orere Point, the regional parks at Duders, Waitawa, Orere Point,

Tapapakanga, Hunua Ranges and Hunua Falls, and the beaches at Orere Point, Waiti Bay, Kawakawa Bay and

New Local High School

Angela Mason from Beachlands has started a petition to the House of Representatives to request they urge the

Ministry of Education to build a new high school to serve the growing community on the Pohutukawa Coast

area, which includes Whitford, Beachlands, Maraetai, Clevedon and Kawakawa Bay. Go to the petition’s

number. In true Kiwi fashion, if you think of the issue of a new local high school as a rugby ball, we need to

form a rolling maul to get it over the line.

CLEVEDON CREATIVE ARTS GROUP has been set up for all "Creatives" in the local community and surrounding areas. We

meet weekly on Tuesdays 6pm-9pm at the Clevedon District Centre; to paint, sketch, chat and share knowledge with like minded people, be you a beginner or professional. On the 1st Tuesday of every month 6pm-9pm the wider community of Creative Artists (be you a Sculpter, woodworker, jewellery maker, glass blower, painter, whatever your passion) meet to share their artwork and collaborate with others. Together we aim to grow as a group and exhibit our works of art. Cost only $5 per person per meeting to help cover expenses.
