• The master mind behind the concept “Phonebloks” .dutch designer “DAVE HAKKENS”

THE BASIC STRUCTURE

INTRODUCTION & CONCEPT

• Phone with discrete separable pieces• Completely customizable design• We can add components like in lego bricks.

HARDWARE

• Modular designs of phonebloks are based upon three concepts.

1. Lower barriers to entry.2. Increase the pace of innovation.

3. Substantially compress development timelines.

• Every bloks are connected to the base.• Each blok has a designated place labelled

with a symbol of its function.• Contains bloks such as

camera,memory,speakers,battery etc.

SOFTWARE

• Software not revealed yet.• The most voted being “ANDROID OS”.• Even planning to develop a new Phoneblok OS.

ADVANTAGES

• Environmental friendly/reduces electronic waste.• Customization• More flexibility• Never be outdated• Solar powered batteries• Sensitive screen for blind people

DISADVANTAGES

• Replacing the blocks can cause damage to the base.

• Considerable distance between motherboard and components may lead to delay in response.

• Quality of connection requires expensive pins and sockets.

• The sharp edges of the block make it uncomfortable to hold

CHALLENGES

• Limited manufacturers• Phonebloks will be heavier than regular

smartphones• Currently people are not interested in buying

modular phones instead they prefer smartphones available in market

• There is complexity.• Compatibility problems-huge challenge for

software companies.

FUTURE

• Already working with Motorola advanced

technologies called “Project ARAProject ARA”.

PROJECT ARA

• Project ARA is the codename for an initiative by Google that aims to develop a free, open hardware platform for creating highly modular smartphones. The platform will include a structural frame that holds smartphone modules of the owner's choice, such as a display,

keyboard or an extra battery.

• The first model of the modular phone is scheduled to be released in January 2015 and is expected to cost around $50.

CONCLUSION

• Phoneblok is currently a concept by Dutch designer Dave Hakkens.

• A phone can be modularized into many parts.

• User can customize it according to his needs.

• Long Durability.• May be touch expensive.• Innovative idea which may change the

Gadgets world.
