Before the Interview

• Remember the Goal!– The goal of most phone interviews is to get the

person you are interviewing with to decide to invite you to an in person interview, its like qualifying to go to LA for the American Idol.

• Make sure the voice mail answer on your phone sounds clear and professional!

– Example one – good and clear– Example two – not clear – Example three - music– Example four – wrong energy

• Practice the basic way to answer job related questions:– First answer yes or no, if it is a yes or no question,

or if not repeat the question– State an example of your experience as it relates

to the question, no less than 30 seconds, no more than 2 minutes

– Wrap it up by asking them “does that answer your question”, “or is that what your looking for”.

• Practice answering basic questions

– Why do you want to work here?– Do you have any experience doing this job?– Why did you leave your last job?– Tell me about yourself?

• Have a copy of your resume (or what you put on the application on hand).– Tape it on a wall– Carry it in your wallet, pocket, purse, etc.

• Have a copy of the job description on hand, and highlight important aspects.

• Take a deep breath, smile and then pick up the phone; it is important you are comfortable. Both positive and negative emotions can be sensed – show enthusiasm.

• Display an interest or enthusiasm about the company and position!

• Many times, you may be asked if this is a good time, if this is a planned interview you should make sure your calendar is open.

• Have some questions of your own to ask. (about the company or the position)

impress the judges.

• Don’t ask the interviewer how much it pays, or try to negotiate your wage over the phone

• If you are asked how much you want to be paid, try not to get boxed in. Remember there is more things to job than pay, such as:– Opportunity– Benefits– Life balance

• When the interview is over don’t be afraid to ask:– What is the next step?– Based on our conversation do you think I am a

possible fit for this position?– When do you expect to make a decision?
