The practice of tithing provides a regular reminder of your dependence on God. In good times, tithing helps you remember that God is the source of all blessings, and it allows you to demonstrate your gratitude for His care. In hard times, tithing motivates you to remember God’s faith-fulness and enables you to demonstrate trust in God to provide for all of our needs.

In full compliance with Vatican directives and Archdiocesan guidelines, low-gluten communion hosts are offered at each Mass for those who

have special concerns regarding wheat and wheat prod-ucts. Directions for receiving the low-gluten hosts will be given at the time of the Communion Rite. Page 3 - 0146

A Great Time of Thanksgiving: Rev. David O’Brien’s First Mass

This Sunday, May 19, at 3 p.m. our parish celebrates the First Mass of Thanksgiving with Father David O’Brien. The whole parish is invited to join together in celebration of God’s gift of the Sacrament of Holy Orders. Through the ‘Invocation of the Holy Spirit’ and the ‘Laying on of Hands’ by Archbishop Chaput on Saturday at the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul, Deacon Dave O’Brien was ordained a priest.

Fr. David will greet parishioners and friends after his First Mass under the tent on St. Peter Plaza. (Invited guests will join in a dinner in the Celebration Center.) Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend the historic First Mass of Thanksgiving at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, here at St. Peter Church.

Pope Francis ordained 16 men on April 22 at St. Peter Basilica. He reminded them to be like Jesus the Good Shepherd in the way they serve the members of their spiritual flock and minister to those who are lost and searching for God. “Always have before your eyes the example of the Good Shepherd, who did not come to be served, but to serve and to seek and save what was lost. May your teaching, joy and support to the faithful of Christ be the fragrance of your life,” he continued, “that with word and example you can build the House of God which is the Church.”

Pope Francis and the Seven ‘Pillars’ of Priesthood 1) The strength of a priest depends on his relationship with

Christ so that the priest sees as Christ sees and loves as he loves. It took the disciples time to really “become Christ” to others so this is not a given at ordination. For this to happen, the priest needs to continue to grow in union with Christ through prayer and intimacy.

2) Just as he must be close to Christ so the priest must be close to the people he serves. Pope Francis praised one priest for knowing his parishioners so well that he knew not only their names, but also their pets’ names!

3) A priest’s authority must be linked to service, especially to the care and protection of the poorest, weakest, the least important and most easily forgotten.

4) The priest must be a minister of mercy. God never tires of forgiving us. This is a clear call to priests never to tire in faithfully dispensing that mercy, both sacramentally and in their daily living.

5) The priest is called to a simplicity of life. Diocesan priests do not take a vow of poverty, but commit them-selves to a simple lifestyle.

6) The priest must be a model of integrity. There can be no place in priests for a haughty clericalism, any kind of abuse of their position or a concern to climb the ec-clesial career ladder but it was a real sign that no priest should consider himself exempt from the demands of ordinary accountability. Otherwise priests can “become wolves not shepherds.”

7) Finally, the priest is to be a source of blessing for his people. The anointing which he receives at his ordina-tion is not meant just for himself – it is to flow through him to those he serves. “A good priest can be recog-nized by the way his people are anointed...when our people are anointed with the oil of gladness, it is obvious: for example, when they leave Mass looking as if they have heard good news. The priest is anointed with the oil of gladness so as to anoint others with the oil of gladness.” In his preaching, in his prayer, through being truly present to his flock!

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) meets on the first and third Mondays of each month in the Bethany Rooms (Meeting Rooms C+D) near the Parish Of-fice. On Monday, May 20, at 7 p.m. The Topic will be “The Sacraments in Gen-

eral: The Catholic Worldview.” We begin with prayer based on the Sunday readings followed by teaching and discussion.

Our time is comprised of Fellowship and Prayer with Keith Kibler, Nancy Schneider, Deb Reif, Jan and Todd Smith, along with Fr. Fitzpatrick. Our candidates and potential catechumens this year include folks from a wide range of ages and religious backgrounds, and from no particular religious background. I invite your prayers for Alex, Jus-tin, Nicole, Mark, Lindsay, and Audrey. In the weeks lead-ing up to Easter several individuals and members of our parish families have indicated an interest in participating in the RCIA. All persons 16 years and older are welcome to join us on any Monday evening.

5th Sunday of Easter May 18 & May 19, 2019

First Reading Acts 14: 21 - 27

After Paul and Barnabas had proclaimed the good news to that city and made a considerable number of disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch. They strengthened the spirits of the disciples and exhort-ed them to persevere in the faith, saying, "It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God." They appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, commended them to the Lord in whom they had put their faith. Then they traveled through Pisidia and reached Pamphylia. After proclaiming the word at Perga they went down to Attalia. From there they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work they had now accomplished. And when they arrived, they called the church together and reported what God had done with them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles. Responsorial: Psalm 145 (for 7 a.m. Mass only)

R. I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.

Second Reading Revelation 21:1 - 5a

Then I, John, saw a new heaven and a new earth. The former heaven and the former earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. I also saw the holy city, a new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, pre-pared as a bride adorned for her husband. I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Behold, God's dwelling is with the human race. He will dwell with them and they will be his people and God himself will always be with them as their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, wailing or pain, for the old order has passed away."

The One who sat on the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new." Gospel John 13: 31 - 33a, 34 - 35

When Judas had left them, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. If God is glori-fied in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and God will glorify him at once. My children, I will be with you only a little while longer. I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."

Aid for Friends: Cooks: As warm weather arrives, please continue to prepare meals so that we are able to supply food to the people on the program. Although it is no longer soup season, we ran out of soups recently because they are being requested by several of the

people. It is certainly because they are very delicious. Please consider making and contributing some soups. There are containers available.

Visitors: Thank you for your continued dedication to the AFF program and your care for your friends. Please take some of the delicious soups that our wonderful and generous cooks have made available.

Any questions concerning Aid for Friends please call Ellen at 610-384-7160 or email [email protected].

Please help feed the hungry!

Good Works: We are St. Peter Parish volunteers who join many other local Christian church groups in performing home repairs. We reach out in love

and friendship to transform substandard houses into warmer, safer, and drier homes, and by doing so, turn despair into hope. The team welcomes new volunteers of all skill levels. For more information or to be a part of Good Works, call Jim at 610-496-1393 or email him at [email protected].

Community Gardens: Our Church Garden is growing again. Lots of different crops will be grown through October. Planting has begun! Stop over anytime to see what’s

happening. If you are interested in participating please email Barbara at [email protected].

Know Someone Struggling in Some Way? Our Prayer Shawl Minis-try would like to let them know our parish supports them and people are

praying for them. We weave our prayers into the shawls, lap blankets, hats, and socks as we make them, asking God to bring them comfort and let them know He is always with them. And we continue to pray for all our recipients. Our pieces are suitable for men, women, children, and infants. Consider bringing comfort to those who are ill, struggling with loss, or facing some unknown. We can deliver these items if you wish. Contact Jan Smith at [email protected] or 610-269-1756 for more information about our ministry or to gift someone.
