LANI ROSE R DIZON DOHA TWENTY ONE-YEAR-OLD Ghazi Sdiri lost both his legs in a road acci- dent in Tunisia during the Holy Month of Ramadan last year. The future might have appeared ble- ak for the third year medical student th- en but he chose not to let his condition deter him from pursuing his dreams. In January this year, Sdiri was brought to the Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Prosthetics and Orthotics Department as a potential candidate for the power knee prosthe- sis, a cutting edge bionic technology, which is billed as the ‘world’s first and only motor-powered prosthetic knee’. Under the sponsorship of the Qatari government, Sdiri became the first offi- cial recipient of the power knee pros- thesis in the Middle East on Saturday. Talking to media persons in Doha on Sunday, he extended his gratitude to HH the Emir, the Qatari government as well as the HMC for all the support he received during his stay in the country. He added, “This is an opportunity for me to get my life back. And I’m going to make my life much better. I can now go back to Romania to finish my studies and live like any normal person.” Replying to a comment that he would probably be a doctor someday, the young Tunisian, armed with strong determination, said, “And of course I will be. It’s not probably. I will be a doctor. Remember my name.” To date, Qatar is the only country in the region equipped with the smart knee prosthesis technology. The bat- tery-powered device combines artifi- cial intelligence, motion sensors, and wireless communication to learn and adjust to the walking styles of its users. HMC Head of Prosthetics and Orthotics Dr Fadal Adams said, “This is the first power knee prosthesis installed in the region. We now know the criteria and the benefits of this technology for the patients and are going to screen other patients as well. Our basic interest is to bring these technologies to Qatar so that our patients do not need to go abroad to satisfy their needs.” Adams added, “The power knee pro- sthesis was tailor-made for the patient. It’s a smart knee prosthesis because it does the job for the patient. It adapts to a person’s stride, speed and type of ground and can help prevent stumbles. It encourages users to become more active and take on activities that they may otherwise prefer to avoid.” Adams added further, “For strong- willed guys, it will take six to eight weeks before they completely adjust to the technology. But for the other patients, who don’t have the strong psychological ability, it might take them around three months before they start walking actively in the prosthesis.” Perry Boumans, sales manager for Ossur Middle East & Africa, the com- pany behind the creation of the power knee prosthesis, said around 150 power knees have already been installed around the world so far and the number is increasing rapidly. He said, “We supply the technology to the US Army and plan to start trials in the UK Hatley Court Military facili- ty and the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in the US in the near future. People are seeing its benefits and it’s nice to see people’s confidence restored in prosthesis.” “However, the success of the tech- nology depends on the suitability of the product for the patient. It’s not about the patient being suitable for the products. Always, the patient should be at the centre of the conversation and centre of the team,” Boumans pointed out.
