With red, hot chili pepper beads around their necks, and with clipboards and bottled waters in hand, the judges set about sampling all 20 entries, just after 11 a.m. Entries were judged on flavor, smell, color and thickness. Trenton High School student Taylor Dean and her hog, Louise.

THS student vows to donate hog proceeds to Lane Langford By Carrie A. Mizell

Fourteen-year-old Taylor Dean is on a mission to get the community to stand behind her in helping her friend Lane Langford.

The Trenton High School student plans to show her third hog, Louise, at the Suwannee River Fair next week. When she sells the animal, Taylor wants to donate all of her proceeds to Lane Langford. The Trenton High School junior was paralyzed in a car accident just before Christmas.

Taylor is a close friend of Lane’s

and she hopes that her donation will assist the Langford family with medi-cal expenses.

A member of Trenton FFA, Taylor said she hopes the funds will help get Lane what he needs to get back on the football field and play his heart out his senior year of high school.

Taylor is asking the community to support her efforts by bidding on her hog, Lousie. She will be showing the animal on Monday, Mar. 17 and the sale will follow on Wednesday, Mar. 19.

GILCHRIST COUNTY FAIR BOOSTERSDear Gilchrist County Fair Exhibitor & Parents:

In the past, Gilchrist County Fair Boosters have tried extremely hard to cover each and every child down at the Suwannee River Fair on the day of the sale. Due to the current economic conditions, we are asking for your help and support to ensure no child is left standing in the sale ring hearing RESALE. We are diligently soliciting any and all funds available through our local businesses and generous residents of Gilchrist County.

Please see the following breakdown for this year’s show:

Gilchrist Exhibitors Feeders: 28 Fat Steers: 48 Hogs: 85

As you can see, there is a major obligation to Gilchrist County to provide Buyers on behalf of our children. Over the past several years, two or three individuals have gone around door to door, doing mail-outs and making phone calls on behalf of our children. Their dedication to this community and our children is much appreciated. It has always been the philosophy of the Boosters to try to support ANY and ALL children in need from Gilchrist County.

This year, in order to ensure the success of the fair boosters, we need your help. We are currently out raising money and the fair is quickly approaching. For Gilchrist County Fair Boosters to be able to move forward and continue to aid each child in need, we feel the need to employ your help.

This year, again, due to the current state of the economy, we are requiring exhibitors and/or family members to assist the Booster Club in raising money. For you (or your child) to have the Booster Club consider bidding on your animal, you must raise at least the minimum amount as follows:

Fat Steer: $ 100.00 Feeder Steer: $ 75.00 Hog: $ 50.00

Please understand the Booster Club is in no way trying to exclude anyone from receiving assistance, but your help is needed to enable us to continue to purchase animals for Gilchrist County exhibitors. If you already have buyers lined up for your animal, you do not have to participate in the fund-raising efforts. Finding your own Buyers is highly encouraged as the Booster Club is not able to purchase everyone’s animal.

Please contact one of the boosters below with questions, comments or to turn in your collec-tion. Thank you for your time and attention. We look forward to hearing from you. Most sincerely,

Gilchrist County is sure to be a busy place this weekend. Not only will the Suwannee River Fair be in full swing, but the annual quilt fes-tival will be held Saturday in down-town Trenton.

Trenton’s Suwannee Valley Quilt Festival is now in it’s 7th year and has become a pretty big deal with quilters coming from throughout the state to attend the event. Trenton’s Main Street will be closed again this year to make room for quilts to be hung on the front of downtown build-ings. Numerous craft vendors will be set up in the center of the street to sell their hand-crafted items.

The festival committee has plans, not only to have beautiful quilts on display, but also a little something for everyone. Antique cars will be on display near Capital City Bank, while a group of vintage tractor owners plan to bring tractors to town for the crowd to enjoy. The tractors will be displayed on the north end of Main Street.

Also, if you have children there will be several kid friendly activities this year, including pony rides and a scavenger hunt. Children will also have the opportunity to learn about quilting at the festival.

Many quilt guilds will be participat-ing in the festival as well as our local guild the Springhouse Quilt Guild. Members of Springhouse have been working on handmade items to sell in their gift shop which will be located on the platform of the old railroad de-pot on the north end of Main.

One of my favorite things to do at the festival is to plunder through the antiques dealers’ treasures. Funny thing about antiques, they bring back great memories and sometimes I’ll even find an antique that needs to come home with me.

By the way, Saturday is National Quilt Day so attending the festival in downtown Trenton is a great way to

celebrate this wonderful art form for not only our generation, but the many generations of American women who came before us.

While looking through a 1969 Ala-bama cookbook that a friend sent me I found several recipes that I wanted to try. I love old cookbooks that were written back when we didn’t know much about our diet. Back in the day things like bacon, butter and cheese were common ingredients in recipes. Back when the only kind of milk we had was whole milk. In 1969 people did know what margarine was, but one or two percent milk was unheard of at that time.

Needless to say when thumbing through this 40 year old cookbook I stopped on the Bacon and Cheese Pie recipe; thinking I really should try this one.

Bacon and Cheese Pie10 strips of thin or 5 strips of thick bacon1 9-inch pie crust2 cups grated Cheddar cheese2 tablespoons butter1/4 cup onions, chopped fine1 teaspoon saltBlack pepper to taste1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 3 eggs, room temperature, beaten1 1/3 cup whole milk, room tempera-ture

Fry bacon, drain, crumble. Bake pie crust until slightly brown. Sprin-kle bacon in bottom of pie crust then top with cheese.

Melt butter in bottom of frying pan and cook onions until tender. Pour onions and butter into eggs and add milk, flour, salt and pepper and beat well with whisk. Pour egg mixture over the bacon and cheese.

Bake for 40 to 45 minutes in a 350 degree oven. Makes 8 servings.

Enjoy!

Now & Then

By Carrie A. Mizell

No doubt about it, J. Min and Mary Ayers were smiling down from heav-en when their great-grandchildren, Allie Claire and Whitt, each reeled in a bass over the weekend.

Allie Claire loves to fish! In fact, she jumped at the chance to fish off the dock at the Mizell family’s lake house at George’s Lake. We stayed at the lake over the weekend and celebrated my husband Adam’s 33rd birthday. For my children, the high-light of the rest-filled weekend was catching fish.

At 5, Allie Claire is delighted that she is finally old enough to fish in the Shriner’s Gold Hook Award Kids Fishing Tournament coming up in June at Hart Springs. She can hardly wait to board the boat and pull out her prize pole, complete with a Snow White sticker on it. She is determined to catch more fish than her cousin Gus (heaven help us!) because he can run faster than she can. Allie Claire also wants to know if she will win a tro-phy. I remember fishing in the very same tournament when I was a kid, and to this day I recall how big of a deal that shiny, gold participation tro-phy was. We’re making memories!

away and we are going to have a “Try A Day” at Camp Cherry Lake on Fri-day, March 21.

This is an opportunity for any young person ages 8-12 who is look-ing for a fun camp to go to this sum-mer to check out 4-H Camp Cherry Lake just for the day.

We will leave the Extension Office in Trenton at 8 a.m. (125 Ease Wade Street, Trenton) and arrive at camp about 10 a.m. We will explore camp, do some fun activities and head home about 3 p.m. (arriving home about 5 p.m.) Parents are welcomed and en-couraged, but not required to come and see camp for themselves, and can even help drive as we all carpool up together. We will also take our 15 passenger 4-H van. We will just be there a few hours to show families what camp is like, have some fun, and encourage youth to come to camp this summer. There is no cost for our Try A Day at camp; however, please call to reserve your spot if you and/or your child would like to Try A Day at Camp Cherry Lake. Just call (352) 463-3174 or email me at cdecube@ ufl.edu to RSVP.

I try to spend some time reading my Bible every morning. I don’t always, but I try because I really need to hear what God has to say. Also, it helps to get His insight before I start the day and decide to do things my own way. Proverbs 14:12 says “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” Suddenly, getting up a little earlier seems like a good idea. Some mornings, the things I read are comforting. Other mornings, God challenges me to trust Him with a situation I am worrying about. A few days ago, He gave me some very specific parenting advice that blew me away. I can’t stop thinking about it, so maybe it will help other parents too!

I was reading in Ephesians 4:4-6 about Christians being called to one hope, “one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and One God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” Then I read John 10:4-5 which says, “…the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” As I read this, I started thinking about all the voices that compete for an audience in my own thoughts, and how I need discernment to identify which voice is God’s, and which ones are not. We are called to one God and Father, and that means one authority. Immediately God reminded me of the utmost importance of parents having a united voice when it comes to discipline and authority over their children. Having one parent set a rule or give instruction and then having the other parent undermine it by saying things like, “Your Daddy didn’t really mean…” or “Just don’t let your Mama find out” is setting your child up for a lifetime of struggle to identify the voice of God. This holds true within the home, and especially if the parents are divorced or separated. Sadly, our reasoning behind undermining the authority has nothing to do with our child’s best interest, but rather we do it to feel like the favorite parent or to be their “friend”. When a child has two parents giving opposite instructions, they get to choose which one they obey, and it will almost always be the one that gives no protection or guidance. That is a high cost for your child to pay for you to get to be the favorite.

Remember Satan’s voice in the garden? “Did God actually say, “You shall not eat of any tree in the garden?” (Genesis 3:1) He was undermining God’s authority, trying to convince her to disobey. If we as parents undermine the other parent’s authority, our voice can sound remarkably like the Devil’s. Think about that and go back to John 4:5: a sheep will not follow a stranger’s voice because they do not know it. If your children are hearing a parent’s voice undermine authority, the devil’s voice will be very familiar to them when they try to follow the voice of God. This will make them much

more vulnerable to temptation, and it will be easier for them to follow him instead of God.

For parents, this is a bigger deal than just making sure your children brush their teeth, pick up their toys or honor their curfew. It is about taking the time to agree on rules and consequences and then setting authority in place. Then when a conflict occurs, having that authority reinforced and held firm by both parents. When both familiar voices agree, any voice that contradicts this authority will be the voice of a stranger to your children and they will learn to flee from it, because their hearts really do matter.

On Wednesday, Mar. 26 at 7 p.m., the Lighthouse Word Church will be hosting a dramatic presentation entitled, “Facing Your Giants,” with Evangelist and Christian Comedian, Barry McGee.

This event will be for those of all ages. Barry has entertained at NHRA, IHRA, MRO and NASCAR events, and is a three time winner of comedian of the year with CCMA (Christian Country Music Association) in Nashville.

By Charlie SmithIf you haven’t heard, Trenton

Rotary Club is sponsoring a family fun adventure race event the second Saturday of April. The First Annual Trenton Rotary Pedal Paddle Run will have entrants bike from TES to Hart Springs then they will paddle a mile and a half up river and back to Hart Springs where they will run 3.2k through Gilchrist County’s jewel of a county park. We expect a good crowd and we know that everyone that participates and spectators will have a great time.

But it may be wishful thinking to expect a whole lot of fund raising from an event that’s never been done before and it may be wishful thinking to realize the goal of the benefactor of the event as well. The stated benefactor of the event is just an idea, a very worthy and desperately needed idea but just an idea nonetheless.

There are about 30 Children’s Advocacy Centers in the state of Florida according to the Florida Network of Children’s Advocacy Centers (FNCAC). That’s 30 areas of the state where children are getting services desperately needed when they reportedly are the subject of abuse or neglect. Our kids locally, have to go to Gainesville often times with someone that they do not know at

Children’s Advocacy Center: Is it just wishful thinking?

a time when they are in the middle of a process that they do not understand for evaluations and treatment that they probably very desperately need. Ok, What is a Children’s Advocacy Center you ask?? I took this directly from the FNCAC website.

A Children’s Advocacy Center is a child-focused, facility based program in which representatives from many disciplines, including law enforcement, child protection, prosecution, mental health, medical and victim advocacy, child advocacy work together to conduct interviews, and make team decisions about investigation, treatment, management and prosecution of child abuse cases. So a CAC is a place where children can go locally to get services during this difficult process.

And the FNCAC is an organization that provides training, support, technical assistance and leadership on a statewide basis to local CAC’s. FNCAC also coordinate with the national organization. That means that FNCAC will help you once you get going but it takes a local group to find a facility, manage the property and fund administration.

How great is the need for a CAC in the tri-county area? According to state records the kids in our area take advantage of only a small fraction

of the services that are offered to them when they the subject of an abuse case because of the distance to Gainesville. Ask any teacher that you know or for that matter any law enforcement officer or even one of our local judges and they will tell you about the need. Go on U-Tube and search for Children’s Advocacy Centers and you will see what they might look like. Service providers would travel from Gainesville and there is no cost for them to provide those services to the children involved. No question a Children’s Advocacy Center would be a wonderful feather in our community cap.

So what exactly is needed to begin a tri-county CAC:

• Name• Board of Directors• An appropriate facility of at

least 2,500 sq. ft. • An administrator to explore

and write grants and coordinate fundraising

So that’s the wishful thinking of the Trenton Rotary Club, that the little bit of seed money that might be made from a family fun day at Hart Springs might just end up being a small part of something much bigger in the community. All of the local Rotary Clubs, Chiefland, Suwannee Valley, Trenton and Dixie County have expressed an interest in helping support a CAC and there has been a lot of interest from various other individuals and groups but there is no organization at this date. Wishful Thinking??

I am reminded of the fact that

what is now Palms Medical Center in Trenton and Bell were once the wishful thinking of a number of local Rotarians including the late William Clifton and J. Min Ayers and many others. Those individuals would be amazed at what their wishful thinking brought about, so let’s keep wishful thinking we can have a great time and maybe do great things.

Dr. Robert Vaughn, is shown with County Administrator Bobby Crosby and Trenton Rotary Club President Theresa Sapp.

The Trenton Rotary Club and Host Dr. Robert Vaughn heard from Gilchrist County Administrator Bobby Crosby, at its regular Monday lunch meeting on March 3, 2014. Mr. Cosby told Rotarians about the progress Gilchrist County has made in the last year and what is to come. Many roads have been paved with more on tap. An update on the Sabal Trail natural gas pipeline was discussed. Much more has been

accomplished and a new website is being developed for the county.

The Log Cabin Quilters met Thursday, Mar. 6 at the Levy County Quilt Museum at 11050 NW 10th Ave. It was a great “show and tell” day. Suzie and Debi brought in pillows that they had made. Several people brought in their finished quilts.

Suzie made her first Cathedral Window section with Caroline’s help. Caro-line has also volunteered to make a Cathedral Window block for us to hang up outside on the porch. We’ll be making a scrapbook for the blocks that were taken down.

Linda, who lives in Alaska, brought in her Salmon salad for our lunch. She and her husband catch the salmon, then can or freeze it. We look forward to Linda’s visit every winter. Five guests joined us for lunch.

If you’re planning to attend the Quilt Show Saturday in Trenton, stop by our table and meet Cathy and Ailien. They’ll have a variety of items for sale. Stop by to say hello. We will be open that Saturday from 9-5, so you can stop by after you’ve been to the Quilt Show. Rocking chairs will be waiting so you can tell us about the show.

We’re open Tuesday thru Saturday from 10-3. Our phone number is (352) 493 2292.

SubmittedIt is time for our March meeting.

What? Are you kidding? March already?! Oh my goodness!!! Time is flying! We need to get busy and we need you!

Our next meeting is Monday, Mar. 17. Please note the change in location for this month. We will be meeting at Jason’s Deli in Gainesville at 10:30 a.m. It is located in The Oaks Mall Plaza on Newberry Road. Don’t forget to wear green for St. Patrick’s Day!

Our February meeting was held in Chiefland at The Gathering Table. Mr. Alphonso Johnson gave our devotion. He encouraged us to be energized by our possibilities. Don’t settle for “what is” ---add to it. Step solidly forward. Don’t get caught up in comparisons and judgments. What has happened, has happened; get on with life. Give this moment your best shot! His scripture of choice was Matthew 8:13. Alphonso always has wonderful words of wisdom for us. We always look forward to what he has to share.

For February, we had twenty-five in attendance, which included four visitors. What a great number! We need you to join and help us to grow so that we can move forward and help the children in Levy and Gilchrist Counties.

Levy Gilchrist Retired Educators to meet

We celebrated with Karen Philman as she had a birthday in February! It was mentioned that Joan Thomas, a retired teacher from Trenton, is not able to be with us because of illness. We hope that she is well very soon and able to join us. We miss you, Joan!

Sammy Schofield enlightened us on the latest information with the 2014 Legislative Session. As retired educators, we are very concerned about the decisions that are being made in Tallahassee on behalf of the betterment of our children. Sammy does a great job keeping us updated.

Alfonso also gave us a brief education for Black History Month. He gave wonderful information on the Tuskegee Airmen, the military pilots who made such an honorable difference in the raid in Berlin during World War II.

We also had two visitors from FREA District Four. They briefed us on the upcoming State Conference that will be held in St. Augustine, as well as the State Scholarship fund and how it works.

As retired educators, it is our desire and our responsibility to help every child in our counties. We need as many of you who are able, to join us and help. Please plan to attend our next meeting and join us to make a difference!!

auditorium was buzzing with excitement on Tuesday, Mar. 4 as Brandon Alexander, a University of Central Florida football player visited the school.

Alexander talked to students about pursuing their dreams and going to college after graduating from high school. The starting cornerback for the UCF Knights told the students that he used hard work to get where he is.

As he prepares for his senior year of eligibility playing for the Knights, Alexander said, “Take care of your academics in high school and keep believing that you will get your opportunity to fulfill your dream.”

A graduate of Evans High School in Orlando, Alexander played basketball, track and football in high school and had a dream to play at the University of Central Florida. He had no scholarship opportunities, so he tried out as a walk-on to the football team under Coach George O’Leary.

“Coach O’Leary gave me a chance to play in the fourth game

of my freshman season,” Alexander explained. “A close friend of mine went down with a season ending injury and the coaches gave me a shot to play.”

At the end of his freshman year, Alexander was offered a scholarship and he has continued to work hard to this day preparing for his senior season with a dream of playing on Sundays in the National Football League. Alexander recalled that in 2013, the Knights upset Baylor, 52-42 in the Tostitos® Fiesta Bowl to finish 13-1.

A Sports and Exercise Science major, Alexander told the students that he has had some ups and down as a student, but he has worked hard, usually harder than his competitors.

“If you work hard and believe in yourself, you can make a difference,” he added.

Alexander’s proud family in Trenton is his great aunt Marie Davis and his grandmother, a 1972 THS graduate, Sharon Hogan who also accompanied her grandson to Trenton High School as he spoke to the student body last week.
