PROJECT: Sandy Shores Resort –
Typical Foundation Details REM #: 17-9698
NOTES/COMMENTS:
Rempel Engineering & Management Ltd has been hired by Sandy Shores Resort at Lake
Diefenbaker to produce sketches outlining several typical foundation construction details for
the future houses to be constructed at the resort. These details specify typical foundation
construction for some situations which fall outside of the scope of the prescriptive foundation
design parameters as per Part 9 of the NBCC 2010. This due to the higher lateral earth design
loads specified by the SNC Lavalin geotechnical report dated July 25, 2016.
The foundation design details attached in this report are as follows:
Typical foundation walls
- 8’ high x 8” thick concrete foundation wall with up to 6’ of backfill.
- 9’ high x 8” thick concrete foundation wall with up to 7’ of backfill.
- 4’ high x 8” thick concrete crawlspace wall with up to 3’-6” high backfill.
- 4’ high PWF (permanent wood foundation) crawlspace wall with up to 3’-6” high
backfill
Reinforcing for window openings of up to 8’ in width in the following foundation walls
- 8’ high x 8” thick concrete foundation wall with up to 6’ of backfill
- 9’ high x 8” thick concrete foundation wall with up to 7’ of backfill
Reinforcing in concrete foundation walls where a stairwell opening is adjacent
- 8’ high x 8” thick concrete foundation wall and 8’ wide stair opening.
- 8’ high x 8” thick concrete foundation wall and 14’ wide stair opening.
- 9’ high x 8” thick concrete foundation wall and 8’ wide stair opening.
- 9’ high x 8” thick concrete foundation wall and 14’ wide stair opening.
The intent of the attached details is not to eliminate the need for subsequent engineering on all
homes constructed in the area. The intent is to provide a prescriptive method similar to that
offered by the National Building Code of Canada in order to provide the specifications to easily
construct the majority of foundations. Any foundations which fall outside of the scope of this
report and Part 9 of the NBCC 2010 would require additional design by a Professional
Engineer licensed in Saskatchewan. Construction of the foundations are to be in strict
accordance with the details provided and any applicable codes/standards. Any alterations will
require approval from Rempel Engineering and Management Ltd.
