Phoenix Too Young

Baby when I saw you turning at the end of the streetI knew a time was gone and it took me like agesJust to understand that I was afraid to be a simple guyI tried my best to smile but deep inside my heartI felt it was shouting like a crowd dancingI guess I couldn't live without the things that made my life what it is

Can't you hear it calling oh yeahEverybody's dancing' oh yeahTonight everything is overI feel too young

I can't lie on my bed without thinking I was wrongBut when this feeling calls this world becomes anotherNight-time won't hold me in your arms againI got a very good friend who says he can't believe the love I giveIs not enough to end your fearsI guess I couldn't live without the things that made my life what it is

Can't you hear it calling oh yeahEverybody's shaking' oh yeahTonight everything is overI feel too young

Oh rainfalls and hard times coming they won't leave me tonightI wish I knew what I was doingJust do let this spirit surviveEverybody's dancing oh yeahI guess I couldn't live without the things that made my life what it is

Can't you hear it calling oh yeahEverybody's dancing oh yeahTonight everything is overI feel too young

Too Young Lyrics…

Phoenix is an alternative rock band from France consisting of Thomas Mars, Deck d'Arcy, Christian Mazzalai and Laurent Brancowitz.

AnalysisThe music video starts off with scenic shots of a dockyard, establishing shots show fishermen and seagulls. This tells the audience this music video will follow a narrative structure. The main vocalist has started singing and the audience still does not see him. The video is almost like a mini-film, with the same codes and conventions like fast shots, close ups, a lot of movement and bright colours.

We meet the main vocalist who lip-synchs with direct mode of address, he is dressed in fisherman's attire suggesting he is a character in the narrative, he also lip-synchs while acting with the phone prop. There is feature of the diagetic sound of the worker/fishermen.This music video embodies all three styles, Narrative, Performance and Conceptual. The conceptual comes in when the guitarist of the band strums his guitar, where a rainbow streaks out animating the workers into a choreographed dance.

This music video features choreography, amplifying the typical conventions of an indie music video. The images below depict the fishermen/women in an organised way which contradicts their environment because you wouldn’t typically see fishermen dancing. The pianist is miming while they dance and their actions directly relate or mimic the lyrics at the time in the song, “everybody’s dancing…”

In these shots we see the guitarist miming to the song with his instrument creating authenticity of his being a musician and playing the track, in turn engaging the audience more. There is a close-up of him strumming and we the audience see his sparkly outfit. This video combines almost all features of a conventional music video. The filming and editing tells a story of the lyrics, though the narrative gives the audience a different interpretation of the love story or romance suggested in the song lyrics.
