FILM STUDIES 35

Elizabeth Taylor-Mead Executive Director

Spring is springing and your favourite cinema has a great line up of terrific films and events for you.

What do sleuthing and Easter have in common aside from a traditional Easter Egg Hunt? It’s a weekend we’re calling Holmes Is In The House (pp 29-30)! This Sherlock-themed weekend starts with a late night screening of the Billy Wilder gem, The Private Life Of Sherlock Holmes (with surprise introduction!). Our Saturday Kids Club offers activities before Basil, The Great Mouse Detective. On Easter Sunday, see a trio of rare short silent Sherlock whodunnits, with live music.

To thank our loyal Phoenix Friends this season, we invite you to book free tickets to an entertaining, visually delightful lecture on British Film Posters (p 31).

Why not adopt a youthful mood with Noah Baumbach’s new comedy, While We’re Young (p 5) starring Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts. If your garden doesn’t look like Versailles you’ll reach for the secateurs after seeing Kate Winslet create a landscape fit for a king in A Little Chaos (p 7).

More Main Features: Helen Mirren’s on a righteous mission in Woman In Gold (p 6), Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret mix with commoners in A Royal Night Out (p 11), girls get giddy in The Falling (p 8). A new version of Far From The Madding Crowd (p 10) stars Carey Mulligan. Fancy a long shot? We love Dark Horse: Dream Alliance (p 9), the true rags to riches tale that backs a winner.

Our new monthly single screening strand, Sunday Best (p 32) presents films we couldn’t fit in on first release. We start with Life Of Riley, by 91 year old auteur Alain Renais, followed by Force Majeure, a wickedly funny Cannes prize winner.

The Phoenix Cinema Bar (p 23) has homemade seasonal treats in store. Who can ask for anything more?

See you at the movies!

Elizabeth Taylor-Mead, Executive Director

FROM FRIDAY 27 MARCH

Wild Tales 15

2hr 02. Argentina 2015. Directed by Damián Szifrón. With Darío Grandinetti, María Marull, Mónica Villa. In Spanish with English Subtitles.

Nominated for Best Foreign Language film at this year’s Academy Awards, and a Cannes sensation, Argentinean filmmaker Damian Szifron uses the format of a series of six isolated vignettes loosely tied together by one theme: vengeance, in this wonderfully inventive and witty film. Produced by Pedro Almodovar, this vivacious black comedy captures the growing feeling of dissatisfaction with authority in Argentina.

The Face of an Angel 15

FROM FRIDAY 27 MARCH

1hr 41. UK 2015. Directed by Michael Winterbottom. With Kate Beckinsale, Daniel Bruhl, Cara Delevingne.

Michael Winterbottom’s thriller is a riveting and thought provoking fictional retelling of the infamous 2007 murder of British student Meredith Kercher. Terrific performances by Daniel Bruhl (Inglorious Basterds) as a film director and Kate Beckinsale (The Aviator) as an American journalist, both ably presenting the media’s ability to seduce and influence. The controversial Amanda Knox trials form the basis for the film’s fascinating storyline, which uses scenes clearly based on actual news footage, reaffirming Winterbottom as an authentic and original cinematic voice.

FROM FRIDAY 3 APRIL

While We’re Young 15

1hr 37. USA 2015. Directed by Noah Baumbach. With Naomi Watts, Amanda Seyfried, Ben Stiller, Adam Driver, Charles Grodin.

Writer/Director Noah Baumbach (The Squid and The Whale, Greenberg, Frances Ha) is renowned for wonderfully observed and beautifully told familial comedy dramas. Here he tells of a comfortable and unadventurous middle-aged couple (Naomi Watts, 21 Grams and Ben Stiller, Greenberg) whose life is revitalised by their friendship with an unconventional young couple (Adam Driver, Frances Ha, Girls and Amanda Seyfried, Les Miserables). The humour and the humanism come from the generational and cultural differences in this perfectly authentic movie about role reversal and taking chances.

FROM FRIDAY 10 APRIL

Woman in Gold tbc

1hr 47. USA 2015. Directed by Simon Curtis. With Helen Mirren, Ryan Reynolds, Elizabeth McGovern, Daniel Bruhl, Charles Dance, Jonathan Pryce.

Fresh from the Berlin Film Festival, Simon Curtis’ moving film chronicles the efforts of Jewish refugee Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren, The Queen) who’s now living in Los Angeles. Maria challenges the government to recover artwork (Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I by Gustav Klimt) stolen by the Nazis from Vienna, which she believes rightfully belongs to her family. Featuring a truly stellar cast, this film based on a real story, examines ownership, activism and justice in a delightfully sensitive manner.

FROM FRIDAY 17 APRIL

A Little Chaos tbc

1hr 56. USA 2015. Directed by Alan Rickman. With Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman, Stanley Tucci, Helen McCrory, Matthias Schoenaerts.

This charming historical drama set in 1682 in the court of King Louis XIV, centres on the world of a female landscape-designer awarded the assignment of constructing the grand gardens at Versailles, whilst undergoing the attentions of strict garden chief André Le Nôtre (Matthias Schoenaerts, Rust and Bone). Based on the true story of the intelligent and outspoken Sabine De Barra (Kate Winslet, Sense and Sensibility), this is a lavish reminder of the spectacular feats of which humans are capable.

FROM FRIDAY 24 APRIL

The Falling tbc

1hr 42. USA 2015. Directed by Carol Morley. With Greta Scacchi, Maxine Peake, Maisie Williams, Ellie Bamber, Florence Pugh.

This enthralling drama revolves around an unfathomable spate of collapses occurring in a girl’s school in 1960s England. Director Carol Morley’s mystery is a fictional one based on real life phenomena – mass fainting. Morley (Dreams of A Life) has elicited great performances from the mostly young female cast, especially Maisie Wiliams (Game of Thrones) and debut actors Florence Pugh and Ellie Bamber, whose coming of age turmoil extends to sexual awakenings. This compelling and rewarding film is an emotionally enchanting experience.

Far from the Madding Crowd 12A

1hr 59. USA 2015. Directed by Thomas Vinterberg. With Carey Mulligan, Tom Sturridge, Mattias Schoenaerts, Nichael Sheen, Juno Temple.

Thomas Hardy’s classic tale, reimagined by director Thomas Vinterberg (Festen, The Hunt), explores the nature of relationships and love – as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance. Set in Victorian England, independent farm owner Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan, An Education) attracts three very different suitors: sheep farmer Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts, Rust and Bone), Sergeant Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge, Effie Grey), and prosperous William Boldwood (Michael Sheen, Frost/Nixon).

1hr 26. USA 2015. Directed by Louise Osmond. With Brian Vokes, Howard Davies, Angela Davies.

Writer/Director Louise Osmond’s fascinating documentary is about a local barmaid, Jan Voxes, who unexpectedly decides to persuade a group of locals, thereafter known as The Alliance Partnership, to invest in breeding a championship racing horse. The excitement as the potential equestrian moneymaker, Dream Alliance competes in the ‘sport of kings’ and the relationship the locals have to the stallion is truly moving. Osmond’s inspirational feel-good account is pure perfection that’ll have you jumping for joy.

A Royal Night Out tbc Clouds of Sils Maria tbc

2hr 04. France 2015. Directed by Olivier Assayas. With Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart, Chloë Grace Moretz.

This Cannes Palme d’Or nominated film written and directed by Olivier Assayas (Irma Vep) examines art, mortality and performance, with nods to All About Eve and Persona. Juliette Binoche (The English Patient) comes face-to-face with a disquieting reflection of herself when she appears in a revival of the play that launched her career 20 years earlier. Her assistant (Kristen Stewart, Still Alice) accompanies her to an awards ceremony with the emotionally uncomfortable journey taking them through the gorgeous scenery of the Swiss Alps.

Time TBC. USA 2015. Directed by Julian Jarrold. With Rupert Everett, Emily Watson, Sarah Gadon, Bel Powley, Roger Allam.

Released to mark the 70th Anniversary of VE Day, this heart-warming story, based on true events, tells of Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret as they venture out incognito to celebrate the end of the war and mingle with ordinary British people. Lovingly directed by Julian Jarrold (Becoming Jane, The Girl) with a great cast of Rupert Everett (Stage Beauty, To Kill A King) and Emily Watson (Testament of Youth, The Theory of Everything) as King George and Queen Elizabeth, with Sarah Gadon (Belle) and Bel Powley (The Diary of a Teenage Girl) starring as the wide-eyed princesses.

APRIL & MAYSPECIAL EVENTS HOLMES IS IN THE HOUSE

Phoenix Nights: The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes PG

SUNDAY 5 APRIL 7.30PM

1hr 40. UK 1921. Dir by Maurice Elvey. Screened from 35mm print.

Three classic silent episodes from the Stoll series of Sherlock Holmes films starring Eille Norwood as Holmes and Hubert Willis as Dr. Watson - The Dying Detective (1921), The Devil’s Foot (1921) and The Final Problem (1923). Author Conan Doyle was delighted with Eille Norwood as Holmes, stating in his memoirs: “He has that rare quality that can only be described as glamour, which compels you to watch an actor eagerly even when he is doing nothing. He has the brooding eye which excites expectation and a quite unrivalled power of disguise.”

Tickets £9.50

The Phoenix is proud to present a special weekend of Sherlock Holmes related cinematic gems, as part of the Sherlock on Screen season, supported by Film Hub London, to coincide with the Museum of London’s Sherlock exhibition.

FRIDAY 3 APRIL 11.30PM

2hrs 05. UK 1970. Dir by Billy Wilder. With Robert Stephens, Christopher Lee, Colin Blakely.

This wonderful take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s celebrated sleuth from 221b Baker Street, Sherlock Holmes, is closer in tone to the current television phenomenon Sherlock than most other portrayals, with genius filtered through darker sides of the character. Top director Wilder (Some Like It Hot, Sunset Boulevard) pulled together a brilliant British cast: Holmes (Robert Stephens; The Shout), Dr. Watson (Colin Blakely; A Man For All Seasons) and Mycroft (Christopher Lee, The Wicker Man). A mystery thriller, part comedic charm and part psychosexual analysis, while it’s certainly not “Elementary, my dear Watson”, it’s perfect for late night viewing!

Join us for a sixty-minute talk by Sim Branaghan, illustrated with beautiful slides, telling the story of British film posters from their first appearance around 1900 (initially inspired by Victorian Music Hall and Theatrical advertising), through to the rapid decline of the artist-led/painted tradition in the mid-1980s, and subsequent ‘end of an era’ arrival of computer graphic-design packages. We’ll focus on the artists themselves, and on the rise and fall of a unique element of British commercial art. This special event is for Phoenix friends only (see pp. 39-40 for more information on our membership scheme). Tickets are free but as places are limited; booking ahead is advised!

Sim Branaghan was born in 1967 and has been a big film fan since childhood. He began collecting film posters at age 13, and years later became close friends with poster artist Tom Chantrell. It was Tom’s passing in 2001 that spurred Sim to write a book on the history of British Film Posters, which was published by the BFI in 2006. In addition to his obsession with film posters, Sim is a Library Manager, based at East Finchley Library.

EDUCATION

The Phoenix Cinema is one of the UK’s oldest purpose-built, continuously operating cinemas. Beneath the vaulted ceiling which dates back to 1910, the history of film has been shared with millions of audience members. From silent films with live music through two world wars when newsreels were the only source of moving images that captured events overseas; from the clicking reels of 24 frames a second to the digital projection of today, the Phoenix has witnessed it all.

Our next BEHIND THE SCENES TOURS will be on Sunday 31 May. We will be welcoming Dr. Emma Pett from UCL for a talk on ‘alternative histories of the 1960s through film.’ Please check our website closer to the date for more info.
