PALMER, Roy Hatchard 1891-1966 The son of Henry James and Alice Maria PALMER (née BALDRY), Roy was born at Foots Cray, Kent on 6 Mar 1891 and was awarded an M.A. degree. He married Margaret BENSON at Brixworth on 1 May 1937 and they moved to the parish upon his appointment as Rector. Jim COLES said “that he always had a pipeful of good tobacco which he would not share with anyone even when they stood the night watch on the church tower during the Second World War”. Roy left the parish for Cogenhoe on 5 Jun 1948, later moving to Brackley where he died on 16 Jan 1966 at the age of 76. He was buried in the churchyard at Preston Capes on 20 Jan. Children:

PHIPPS, Ann 1781/82-1847 The daughter of Peter and Ann PHIPPS, Ann was born in 1781/82. After her father’s death in 1828, she continued to run the shop but in 1831 the business ran into financial difficulties and she was detained in debtor’s prison to appear at Northampton Court on 28 Mar 1831. PHIPPS, Edward Leopold 1884-1934> The son of Henry and Elizabeth PHIPPS (née ALLEN), Edward was born at Woodford Halse in 1884 and followed his father's occupation as a farmer. At the start of the First World War, Edward enlisted as a private in the Northants Yeomanry, service number 145323, and began service in France on 18 Apr 1915. He married Ella PILE at Preston Capes on 3 Nov 1915 when he effectively moved to the parish. Edward was demobbed in 1919 and was awarded the British War and Victory medals and 1915 Star. He moved to the Stratford-on-Avon district in 1934 and died there in 1955 at the age of 71. Children:

PHIPPS, Frederick John 1889-1915 The son of John Thomas and Emma PHIPPS (née OSBORNE), Frederick was born at Preston Capes on 28 Jun 1889 and baptised at the parish church on 2 Sep. He attended the village school between 18 Jul 1892 and 21 Jul 1902 and after leaving worked as a bricklayer’s labourer. During the First World War, Frederick enlisted as a private, no: 18665, in the 7th Battalion of the Northamptonshire Regiment and was posted to France on 1 Sep 1915. He was killed in action on 27 Sep 1915 at the Battle of Loos and was buried in Loos Memorial Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. Sarah is recorded as having a mental disability since childhood. After her father died about 1865, she moved with her mother to Sheepwash, Devon and then to Harpford, Devon to live with her sister Cora who was by that time married to Charles JAMES. Her mother died in 1884 and Sarah moved to Clerkenwell, Middx to live with her other sister Susannah and came to Preston Capes with them in 1900. She married Francis James PINN, a confectioner, in 1872 when they moved to Kentish Town, Middx where they ran a corner shop and a few years later, her husband was running a confectioner’s in Kensington, Middx. They moved to Clerkenwell, Middx about 1886 where Francis became a publican and came to Preston Capes upon his retirement in 1900. The left the parish in 1907 for Priors Marston where she died in 1924 at the age of 77. Children:

He moved to Little Preston with his wife and family in 1907.Thomas was tragically killed by a train at Woodford Halse Station while crossing the line to the other platform on 22 Apr 1909 at the age of 63 and was buried in the churchyard on 24 Apr. SMASHED TO DEATH IN DAUGHTER'S PRESENCE Inquest yesterday

A frightful railway accident occurred on Thursday afternoon at Woodford Halse Station on the Great Central. Mr. Thomas R. PRATT, Little Preston, Preston Capes, being cut down by an express and instantly killed. The body was terribly mutilated, and the fatality was made additionally distressing by the fact that it was witnessed by Mr. PRATT's daughter, who was just starting on a holiday.

The sad affair occurred about two o'clock. Mr. PRATT drove his daughter to the station with some luggage in a pony cart. He drove up to the goods approach, took a parcel, and started to cross the line with it for the down platform. At the moment the up express from Newcastle to Bournemouth rushed through the station, and Mr. PRATT was hurled a considerable distance. It appears that the buffer struck his head, which was terribly smashed. It is said that the impact was so loud that it was like the sound of a fog signal, and was heard by


people a good way off. The injuries were frightful. The brain was scattered in all directions. The right arm and the right leg were cut off, and the left leg was terribly crushed.

The distress of Miss PRATT, who was an eyewitness, was most pitiful; and though she received all possible comfort from the railway officials, it was long before she could be pacified. Dr. A. Glen HAYS was summoned, but, of course, he could do nothing. The portions of the body were collected, and, under the direction of P.C. GUPWELL, were removed to the White Hart Hotel.

The Inquest Mr G. M. PERCIVAL, District Coroner, held the inquest on Friday afternoon. The

Foreman of the Jury was Mr W. H. SMITH, and the Railway Company was represented by Mr G. H. ASKEW (Loco Superintendent), Mr T. J. ALMEY (Traffic Inspector) and Mr W. HOPLEY (Permanent-way Inspector).

Miss Claudina PRATT, aged about 23, was called. She said that her father, Mr Thomas Ralph PRATT, was a retired wine merchant and farmer, formerly of Daventry and was 63 years of age. He drove her to Woodford on Thursday, as she was going away by train to London. He drove up the goods station approach to deliver two sacks of potatoes. They alighted near the goods office. There was a luggage train standing in the way, and witness told her father she could not go across. He then took her luggage across and witness intended to follow after the line was clear. The approach and steps from the main road to the station was the proper way to go. The witness continued:

"I saw him pass the front of the luggage train and then I saw the express train coming. I called out to him, but he could not hear me. He afterwards turned as if he saw the train coming, and he ran, and I thought he got safely to the other side. I did not see him knocked down. I should have crossed the line in the same way to save time, if the luggage train had not been in the way." Harry GOODE, Hinton, mineral clerk on the Great Central Railway at Woodford Station, said that Miss PRATT asked him, about 2.5 p.m., if a goods porter were near. Witness was in the gateway coming across to his office. The deceased also asked him if a goods porter could take two bags of potatoes out of the trap. He found the porter in the weigh office, and asked him to see about the matter. Witness was speaking to him when he heard a report and thought something had happened. Witness did not see Mr PRATT knocked down. When witness went to look for the porter he left Mr PRATT standing near the trap, and did not know that he intended to cross the line or witness would have stopped him. Witness did not notice any luggage in Mr PRATT's hands. The gate is private and for the use of the company's servants only, and the public have no right to use that way to the station. There is a notice at the entrance to the goods yard to that effect.

William WELCH, Hinton, foreman platelayer at Woodford, said that he was at the south end of Woodford Station platform, and saw a man cross the up loop line from the goods yard. There was an engine attached to a goods train, which was stationary as far as witness could see. The man, who was Mr PRATT, had a bag of luggage in his left hand, and he crossed the up main line and stood close to the platform. Witness saw the up express come and hit him. Witness did not see him make any movement. It appeared as though Mr PRATT did not see any danger, but it was doubtful if he had time to get on the platform had he tried. Mr PRATT had the luggage in his hand when knocked down. It appeared to witness to be a pure accident.

Witness assisted to pick the deceased up and to remove the body. He was quite dead. From the time witness saw him to the train hitting him would be about three seconds.

P.C. William GUPWELL, stationed at Woodford, said that he was called to the station, and found the deceased lying close to the platform face downwards. He appeared to have been run over by a train. After Dr HAYS had seen the body, witness had it removed to the White Hart Hotel. The gold watch on the body was still going, the glass only being cracked and very slight damage done to the works.

Dr A. Glen HAYS said that he was advised that a man had been knocked down at the station about a quarter past two, and he immediately attended. He found the body of Mr PRATT, a gentleman whom he knew well. He was quite dead. The skull was badly fractured, and the right arm and both legs were severed. Witness superintended the removal to the White Hart Hotel. He should say that death was instantaneous.

The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death" and expressed a desire that their sympathy should be conveyed to the relatives of the deceased.

Mr PRATT's wife died about twelve months ago, and a married daughter quite recently. The driver of the engine was Mr O'BRIEN, a Woodford man.

PRATT, Walter 1886-1960 The son of Charles, a gatekeeper, and Elizabeth Jane PRATT (née BROOKES), Walter was born in Smethwick, Staffs in 1886 and moved to Aylesbury, Bucks about 1908 where he worked as a railway engine fireman. He married Mildred Rose HIGGINS in 1915 and came to Little Preston with his family about 10 Sep 1922. They lived in the parish for a few months until about 13 Jan 1923 when they moved to Woodford Halse. After his retirement about 1951, they moved to the Banbury area where Walter died in 1960 at the age of 73. Children:

PYM, Adeline Mary 1862-1906> The daughter of Edward Gambier, then Rector of Washington, Durham and Lucy Catherine PYM (née BAXTER), Adeline was born in Washington, Durham in 1862. After her father’s death in 1864, she moved with her mother to her maternal grandfather’s home in Westminster, Middx and left there to lease apartments in Hammersmith. She became a member of the Navvy Mission Society, who worked to improve the living conditions of navvies on the railways and moved to Woodford Halse before coming to Preston Capes in 1897 where she rented a cottage. She moved to East Molesey, Surrey but her continued support of her cause led her to petition for bankruptcy on 2 Jun 1905. The order made on 21 Jul 1905 was discharged on 2 Mar 1906. Residence:
