My Adventure in Austin’s Colony

My Journey

• I came to Austin’s Colony because there was cheap land and we lost all of our money in the Finical Panic of 1819.

• My family and I sailed from New Orleans, it was a hard trip because we lost almost all of our food, but it was well paid for to come to this beautiful country.

My Arrival

• For being an Austin’s Colony member you have to be Honest, Law-abiding citizen, Hard working, No gamblers, No profane swearers, No drunkards, No idlers, Willing to become a Mexican citizens, Willing to convert to Catholicism.

• For the start of 1822 I had $1,000, first I had to pay my yearly land payment, that left me with $955.20. Next I had to pay for my crops which cost $700. I had $255.20 left, but my income was $1,000, so my total was $1,355.20 as my bank balance.

• Harsh winter• Many cattle died • Lots of building taking place-need lumber• Lively was late in arriving• So I got $1,355.20 in these conditions. But it

was well paid for because I earned $355.20 more than what I started with.

• For the start of 1823 I had $1,355.20and I had to pay my yearly land payment. Which left me with $1,310.40. then I had to invest 1,000 for my crops, which left me with $310.40. my income that year was $1,250 plus $310.40 gave me $1,560.40 as my bank balance.

• Lively sank • Dispute with the Mexicans over export of

cotton• Good year for cattle • Mild winter • That year was a pretty good year, there wasn’t

much to challenge my family and I.

• For the start of my last year of yearly land payments, year 1824, I paid my payment and that left me with $1,15.60. This year I spent $1,500 on crops, which left me with $15.60. but my income was $3,500. So my bank balance that year was $3,515.60.

• Colony thrived • Bumper cotton crop• High demand for lumber-lots of building • High demand for beef• That year was by far the best I had. Because I

got $3,500 dollars as my income!!

My Town

• At the end of that year my town (San Felipe) gave six hundred dollars to the people that populated the town. They gave $600 because we picked the heart of Austin’s Colony. And there business was booming so they gave the money to us, because we made so much money that we had to get a reward.

My Conclusion

• By the end of that 3 year experience I was so successful. I made a TON of money. It was beautiful and I made money. I am glad that I made the decision to go to Austin’s Colony.
