    We bid farewell to

    Mary on Sunday No-

    vember 20! Many a

    tear was shed! But we

    were all happy for her

    new position in Dela-

    ware and know they

    will be blessed with

    her ministry as we

    were.

    This Sunday was also

    Thanksgiving and re-

membering all Godhas given us. It was

    also a gathering of our

    pledge for 2012.

    Mary continued to as-

    sist us with office and

    computer instructions

up to the time she left.

    She and Sue

    left via South-

    west on Tues-

    day Novem-

    ber 29 the

    with her two

    cats. I report

    that they

    made it to the

    Baltimore air-

    port with no

accidents. They werepicked up by mem-

    bers of the church and

    driven to Bethany

    Beach, Delaware. I

    heard the cats had

    free run of the van

    during the 3 hour

    drive.

After Mary left a num-ber of volunteers

    (Diane,Pat, Peggy ,

    Janice, Scott, and oth-

    ers assisted in reor-

    ganizing files, items

    left and reconfiguring

    the office computers.

Vestry Meets With Joan AnthonyOn 27 November ,the Ves-

    try met with Joan Anthony

    (Canon to the Ordinary) to

    discuss options for St.

    Philips after Marys leav-

    ing.Joan had consulted with

    Senior Warden, Mike Wray

    that we consider hiring

    Stephen Shaver as the Sup-

    ply Priest from 4 December

    through Epiphany. After

    discussion, the Vestry

    agreed that Stephen was

    an excellent choice and he

    could serve through the

    Christmas season. The Ves-

    try also decided St. Philips

    should have a Supply priest

    through January. During

    that time the Wardens and

    the Vestry will work with

    Joan Anthony on the next

    phase.

    of Washington Medical Cen-

called to St. Stephen's in the

    fall of 2010.

    Stephens passions include

    great liturgy, choral music,

    travel, baseball, hiking, and

spending time with Julia(and their cat Ceili). He also

has a special love for Rus-

    sian culture, language, and

    spirituality. He and Julia sing

    with Seattle Pro Musica, one

    of the area's many wonderful

    pus ministry at Emory, and

    began discerning a call to

    ordination. He spent three

years in New York City at

    the General Theological

    Seminary before getting

    married to his wife Julia,

    moving to Dallas, and being

    ordained a priest (all within

    six weeks during the sum-

mer of 2007, meaning it took

a while to recover from themajor life change of it all).

He and Julia were thrilled to

come to Seattle in the sum-

mer of 2009 after years of

    the upcoming year. Stephen

loves being a priest and a

    young adult and living out

    both those identities as fully

    as possible.

    The reason Im a Christian

is the profound power of themystery of Easterthat God

    responds to the suffering,

evil, death, and pain of crea-

    tion, not by explaining it

    away or pretending it

    doesnt exist, but by enter-

ing into it fully with us in Je-

    choral ensembles. They also

    enjoy running, and have

    completed two half-

    marathons so far. Around the

    Diocese of Olympia, Ste-

    phen serves on the Liturgy

    and Arts Commission and

    the Commission for Outdoor

    Ministry. He also recently

    completed a two-year certif-

    icate from the diocesan Col-

    lege for Congregational De-

    velopment and will serve as

a trainer for the College in

sus. I've seen that in the hos-

pital and in the parish. I see it

in my own life. And I see it

week after week as the com-

    munity gathers to celebrate

    the Eucharist and commemo-

    rate Jesus victory over death.

We are people of the resur-

    rection.
