• 4 hours by air from Narita

• Area of 300,000 square kms., slightly smaller than Japan

Description of the Alangan Mangyan

• Original inhabitants of Mindoro Island

• They belong to different tribes

• Mostly residing in the hills of Mindoro

• Makes their livelihood from agriculture

San Lorenzo Learning Center Banilad School for Alangan

Mangyan• Established in 1992 as

an extension of the San Lorenzo Learning Center in Lalud

• Currently has 57 students studying elementary school from Grades I to VI

Features of the School

• Free education is provided for all students• Financial support is provided by Bukid

Foundation• Provides integrated elementary education• Five main subjects are taught: Languages

(Filipino), Math, Science, Arts and Physical Education during the school year from June to March of the following year

• Administered by school directress and 3 teachers have shifts teaching the major subjects

Bukid Foundation

• A non-profit, non-governmental foundation established in 2002 in the Philippines

• The organization’s objective is to provide and manage funds to provide free education for Alangan Mangyan school children

• Administrative staff is composed of volunteer professionals from multiple disciplines

Participation Process

• Submit application form to Bukid Foundation to indicate intent to participate

• Make final decision to participate and payment of program costs

• Attend orientation seminar and workshop• Attend pre-departure briefing• Participate in the Philippine Study Tour• Submit a final report after the tour to Bukid
