EXPLANATORY NOTES

This semi-annual Goat Industry Performance Report presents the industry situation in terms of inventory by farm type and age classification; volume of production; supply and disposition; and, monthly average prices at farmgate level.

This report is released every 30th of September covering January-

June data of the current year as reference period.

The Livestock and Poultry data system of the Philippine Statistics Authority-Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (PSA-BAS) is supported by two (2) major surveys, namely:

1) The Backyard Livestock and Poultry Survey (BLPS) which covers

15,020 sample households in 1,079 sample barangays nationwide; and,

2) The Commercial Livestock and Poultry Survey (CLPS) which covers around 586 independent farms based on the January 2014. A goat farm is considered commercial when it has a farm capacity of at least 21 head of adult goats. Both surveys for goat are simultaneously conducted semi-annually in

all provinces.

Another survey that supports the statistical requirements of the livestock and poultry sector is the Survey of Slaughterhouses and Poultry Dressing Plants (SSHDP)*. This covers around 1,387 Accredited (AAA and AA) and Locally Registered Meat Establishments (LRMEs) nationwide and is undertaken in coordination with the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS).

As of July 1, 2014, total goat inventory was at 3.71 million head. It increased by 0.87 percent from the previous year’s inventory of 3.68 million head. Goat population in backyard farms improved by 0.93 percent while a decline in commercial farms by 2.69 percent was recorded. Of the total inventory, about 3.65 million head or 98.38 percent were raised in backyard farms. The rest were in commercial farms.

HIGHLIGHTS

Goat production during the first half of 2014 was 36.52 thousand metric tons liveweight. This was 0.29 percent lower than previous year’s record of 36.63 thousand metric tons liveweight. The average farmgate prices of live goat during the period January to June 2014 went up from P105.25 per kilogram in 2013 to P111.13 per kilogram in 2014 or 5.58 percent.

The total goat inventory as of July 1, 2014 was 3.71 million head.

This was 0.87 percent higher than last year's record of 3.68 million

head.

Around 39.95 percent of the goat

inventory were does or female breeders. Bucks or male breeders

accounted for 8.03 percent. Kids shared 32.91 percent in the total

inventory. The remaining 19.11

percent were male castrated goat and those intended for fattening.

INVENTORY PRICES

The average farmgate price of live goat during the first half of 2014 was

₱111.13 per kilogram. This was 5.58 percent higher than the 2013 level of ₱105.25 per kilogram.

The highest average farmgate price in 2014 was ₱112.22 per kilogram recorded in June. On the other hand, the lowest farmgate price was

noted in May at ₱108.69 per kilogram but was 2.73 percent higher than the 2013 level.

The total volume of goat production during the period January to June 2014 was approximately at 36.52 thousand metric tons liveweight. This level dropped by 0.29 percent from the 2013 output of 36.63 thousand metric tons liveweight.

Goat production showed a positive growth of 1.23 percent in the first quarter while a reduction by 1.93 percent was recorded in the second quarter of 2014.

Total supply of live goats in the first half of 2014 was 5.28 million heads or a slight increase of 0.69 percent from the previous year’s supply of 5.24 million heads.

Total disposition of goat during the period of January to June 2014 was 1.57 million heads. This was up by 0.28 percent from the previous year’s level. The supply of goat disposed for meat purposes was 1.52 million heads or 0.48 percent higher than the 2013 level. The number of deaths or losses at 0.53 million heads showed a decrease of 5.13 percent compared with the level on the same period last year.

INVENTORY PRICES

The average farmgate price of live goat during the first half of 2014 was

₱111.13 per kilogram. This was 5.58 percent higher than the 2013 level of ₱105.25 per kilogram.

The highest average farmgate price in 2014 was ₱112.22 per kilogram recorded in June. On the other hand, the lowest farmgate price was

noted in May at ₱108.69 per kilogram but was 2.73 percent higher than the 2013 level.

As of July 1, 2014, total goat inventory was at 3.71 million head. It increased by 0.87 percent from the previous year’s inventory of 3.68 million head. Goat population in backyard farms improved by 0.93 percent while a decline in commercial farms by 2.69 percent was recorded. Of the total inventory, about 3.65 million head or 98.38 percent were raised in backyard farms. The rest were in commercial farms.

HIGHLIGHTS

Goat production during the first half of 2014 was 36.52 thousand metric tons liveweight. This was 0.29 percent lower than previous year’s record of 36.63 thousand metric tons liveweight. The average farmgate prices of live goat during the period January to June 2014 went up from P105.25 per kilogram in 2013 to P111.13 per kilogram in 2014 or 5.58 percent.

EXPLANATORY NOTES

This semi-annual Goat Industry Performance Report presents the industry situation in terms of inventory by farm type and age classification; volume of production; supply and disposition; and, monthly average prices at farmgate level.

This report is released every 30th of September covering January-

June data of the current year as reference period.

The Livestock and Poultry data system of the Philippine Statistics Authority-Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (PSA-BAS) is supported by two (2) major surveys, namely:

1) The Backyard Livestock and Poultry Survey (BLPS) which covers

15,020 sample households in 1,079 sample barangays nationwide; and,

2) The Commercial Livestock and Poultry Survey (CLPS) which covers around 586 independent farms based on the January 2014. A goat farm is considered commercial when it has a farm capacity of at least 21 head of adult goats. Both surveys for goat are simultaneously conducted semi-annually in

all provinces.

Another survey that supports the statistical requirements of the livestock and poultry sector is the Survey of Slaughterhouses and Poultry Dressing Plants (SSHDP)*. This covers around 1,387 Accredited (AAA and AA) and Locally Registered Meat Establishments (LRMEs) nationwide and is undertaken in coordination with the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS).
