PHILIPPINE EMBASSY VIENNA AND FILIPINO COMMUNITY IN AUSTRIA JOIN HANDS IN THE SUCCESSFUL CELEBRATION OF THE PROCLAMATION OF PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE

On the occasion of the 114th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence, theEmbassy and the Permanent Mission of the Philippines in Vienna hosted two art exhibitions inVienna and launched the new tourism slogan at the Philippine Independence Day Ball.

- On 23 June, Vienna PE/PM hosted the Vernissage of the Art Exhibition by PhilippineContemporary Visual Artists at the Museum of Young Art (MOYA) in Palais Schönborn, Vienna.

Artworks of three distinguished Filipino visual artists: Rafael Cusi, Rene Robles, and ArisBagtas are on display at MOYA until 28 June 2012. The vernissage was attended by HRHPrincess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol of Thailand, members of the Diplomatic Corps, representativesof the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Vienna, academics, businesscommunity and leaders of the Filipino community in Austria.

Guests of the Vernissage at the Museum of Young Art listening to the message of AmbassadorYparraguirre. - On 25 June, Vienna PE/PM hosted the Opening of “Impressions: An Art Exhibition ofPaintings” by Manuel D. Baldemor atthe lobby of the Vienna International Center (VIC), home of the United Nations Offices inVienna. Manuel Baldemor’s “IMPRESSIONS” is a revisit of his mural at the VIC Rotunda entitled “Pasasalamat”depicting the cultural and religious traditions of the Filipinos. The mural is one of the fewinternational artworks in the entrance hall of the VIC and was unveiled by former PhilippinePresident Fidel V. Ramos in 1999. The event was also attended by the members of the Diplomatic Corps, representatives of theUnited Nations and Other International Organizations in Vienna, academics, businessmen andleaders of the Filipino community in Austria. The 39 art pieces are on display until 29 June2012.

Guests watched the performance of the VIC Club Filipino “ Piliin ang Pilipinas” during theOpening of “Impressions” on 25 June 2012 at the United Nations Offices in Vienna. In her remarks in both exhibitions, Ambassador Lourdes O. Yparraguirre said that “the Filipinonation has found a renewed sense of purpose to defend the rights and freedoms that we haveearned, and to strengthen the democratic institutions and processes that have guided our wayof life”. Aside from the art exhibitions, several other events were held in June to celebrate the PhilippineNational Day: 1. Independence Day celebration hosted by members of the Filipino community working inthe United Nations Offices in Vienna, Vienna International Centre, 12 June 2012.
