Development and Evaluation of a Cell-

Although conventional methods of determining
parasite infection in humans and anopheline
mosquitoes remain as the source of direct
evidence of parasite absence or presence in an

as complimentary methods in proving the
attainment of malaria elimination has now become
valuable and worth pursuing. This need has
driven this project to develop a cell-based malaria

Cellular Immunity and Resistance to
Schistosomiasis in the Philippines
(CRISTAL)
CRISTAL will analyse cellular and antibody
responses at baseline and at follow up intervals
after treatment to correlate immune phenotype
with reinfection status. It is hypothesised that the
frequency and phenotype of follicular T helper
cells (Tfh) and follicular T regulatory cells (Tfr)
determine the antibody classes produced and
hence, a resistant or susceptible phenotype in
infected individuals. No previous studies have
investigated the role of Tfh and Tfr cells in
schistosomiasis and the new information gained
from this study will be of importance to combat
this debilitating disease in the Philippines, as it
remain a major barrier to social and economic
development. CRISTAL will provide a better
understanding of the immune response and will
inform the future development of vaccines.

expanded COVID-19 testing and primary
screening by enabling conventional thermocyclers
to be used with FDA-approved qPCR test kit
reagents (e.g. the UP COVID-19 kit) in order to

‘SWIFTeR’: A focused study to validate
a streamlined COVID-19 testing
technology (for approval)
To validate one or more related isothermal
amplification and detection methods for use,
ideally with saliva as the matrix thereby removing
the need for slow and costly RT-qPCR
thermocycling infrastructure.
To validate one or more isothermal methods using
a protocol that requires no/minimal RNA
extraction steps.
To demonstrate the potential of these process
improvements to enable the Philippines to safely
and efficiently move progressively towards at-or-
near point of care testing for COVID and related
pathogens.
