What I want to talk about:
At the heart of improving post harvest drying and storage for a hungry and
poverty-troubled world, is the widespread application of simple, affordable, modern technology –
we like to call it:
“The Green Revolution, Phase II, the Storage Revolution”

World Bank Statement:
“The World Bank Group, including the International Finance Corporation (IFC), its private sector investment arm,
recognizes that postharvest loss reduction should become one of the medium-term pillars of investment in
agriculture…The World Bank and IFC also integrate postharvest loss in many of our agricultural projects.”

Regulations on Permissible Levels
To protect consumers, often restricted to <10PPB
In 2010, 10% of the Kenya maize crop had to be destroyed because of excessive
aflatoxin levels.

An estimated 4.5 billion people in developing countries are at risk of uncontrolled, or poorly controlled exposure to AF.
Up to 40% commodities in local African markets exceed allowable levels of AF for foods.
A cross sectional study in Ghana shows that immune systems of HIV infected people are significantly modified if they have above median levels of natural exposure to AF.
People with a high AF biomarker status in The Gambia and Ghana were more likely to have active Malaria.

What is Airtight Hermetic Storage?
A Modern “Green” solution to Safe Storage Up to One Year
Low O2 / high CO2 environment kills living insects & suppresses new development without pesticides
Gas-tight storage Facility (1-2% Oxygen)(to all to common 25% losses!)
Prevents growth of mold producing aflatoxins (decreasing vulnerability to cancer & HIV)
Prevents increase in Free Fatty Acids (FFAs)
Moisture level remains constant

“Hermetic Storage of Rice is becoming increasingly popular
across Asia, and for good reason – as well as being transportable, it is
better than air-conditioned storage and almost as good as a cold room, at a
fraction of the cost.”

GrainKeep Center™ Project Goals
• Building the capacity of farming communities, women, men & youths to effectively participate in sustainable cereal production.
• Aggregate 2,400 MT of grain for food security and trade, at hedged market prices.
• Intermediation in contract farming and forward supply contracts for the cereal sector.
• Enhancement of payment systems to support value chain linkages including inventory management systems.
• Undertake rigorous M&E to help us scale up and be sustainable.
We undertake extensive farmer training starting from production, post harvest management of crop to gaining better paying markets, all geared towards improving their productivity and incomes

We encourage women participation in this project because this generates benefits to household nutrition, children’s education, and financial savings and investment

Impact So Far• Established a pilot project in collaboration with NIB
within the Bura Irrigation Scheme (Coast Province) benefitting 2000 households, extended to Meru (Eastern Province) and will be going to northern Kenya (Turkana)
• 610 MT grain aggregated by end April mainly for food security, traders coming on board, WFP registration
• Aflatoxins field testing on-going, no major issues
• Farmers keep to adopt technology and post harvest best practices. Understand how to leverage technology and to work as groups to gain better market prices
