phencyclidine induced psychosis resembles schizophrenia

PHENCYCLIDINE INDUCED PSYCHOSIS RESEMBLES SCHIZOPHRENIA
Nine patients who abused phencyclidine (phencyclohexyl piperidine) developed an acute psychosis resembling acute schizophrenia and so provided an intriguing drug m<Xle1 for the disease. The patients were agitated. hostile. exhibited tangentiality. circumstantiality and were preoo:upied with religious and sexual topiCS. Seven of the 9 had delusional ideas (predominantly religious grandiosity and delusions of influence), 6 patients had auditory hallucinations. 3 were suicidal and 4 disorientated in at least I sphere. Duration of psychosis ranged from 6 to 90 days. Treatment with antipsychotic drugs was aeneraHy ineffective and those who recovered did so gradually. Allen, R.M. and Young.
