INTRODUCTION

The problems of modern industry are more and more complex and requirean intersectorial and interdisciplinary approach that puts together differentcompetences. In several cases the experimental techniques and the methodsof calculus, modelling and simulation, typical of engineering must besupported by the specific knowledge of other disciplines. Therefore, expertsof chemistry, applied physics, medicine are present in the PhD scientificpanel. In the PhD programme of Industrial Engineering differentcompetences and expertises meet to produce new projects and to realizemachines, products and services of practical use.

The research activity, carried out by PhD students under the supervision andwith the help of tutors, aims to solve industrial problems. The spirit of ourPhD programme is to train young researchers to become “problem solvers”.Aiming to this target, problems and ideas are discussed and compared inperiodic meetings focused on topics of large interest such as the productionand conversion of energy, new materials, the engineering research formedicine etc. The practice is very useful for both students and professors. Onthe one hand students go beyond the specific subject of their thesis to get amore general vision fundamental for developing capability and flexibility inproblem solving at the basis of their future work in academy, researchcentres and industry. On the other hand it is possible to achieve relevanttechnical results.

Doctoral research leads to a strong cooperation with industrial companiesand to the realization of products and services of practical and economicinterest. On these grounds PhD students are stimulated and assisted inpresenting research projects in italian and european calls, are involved inactivities of technological transfer and realization of industrial spin-offs, andinformed about rules for the protection of intellectual property.

Internationalization is a remarkable feature of the PhD programme inIndustrial Engineering since the activities are carried out in strongcooperation with several universities and research institutions of othercountries..

TEACHING AND RESEARCH

The main cultural and scientific themes of the PhD programme in Industrial Engineering are:

- Materials and Productive Processes;

- Energy and Environment;

- Micro-technologies and Devices for Biomedical and Nuclear applications;

- Technology for Medicine and Sports;

- Chemical, Mechanical, Thermal and Optical Measurements;

- Technology and Methods for Cultural Heritage.

The doctoral activity of research is based on these general themes and thespecific topics of PhD thesis will regard related innovations anddevelopments. The PhD education program prescribes, for the first twoyears, the acquisition of 12 credit points per year to be gained either byparticipation in official courses delivered by our or other Italian and foreignUniversities, or by attending specific doctoral modules. The third year will betotally devoted to the discussion of the results previously achieved andto the final writing of the doctoral thesis. Personalized educational plans willbe devised for PhD students by their tutors in order to provide them the bestand most appropriate learning and training opportunities. All educationalplans include also general research topics devised to train them in topicssuch as the writing of essays and scientific projects and reports, in theprotection of intellectual property and in technological transfer.
