BOLOGNA PROCESS

Bologna Declaration, 1999

Aims to create the European

higher education area by

harmonizing academic degree

standards and quality

assurance standards

throughout Europe for each

faculty and its development

Priorities for

2010-2020:

5

BOLOGNA PROCESS ...

1. Ensuring a quality higher education system

2. Adopting a two- or three-cycle system of study (BA, MA, PhD)

3. Promoting the mobility of students and academic and administrative staff

4. Introducing a credit system (ECTS) for the assessment of study performance

5. Recognition of levels: adopting a system of easily identifiable and comparable levels

6. Active involvement of higher education institutions, teachers and students in the

Bologna Process and student participation in the management of higher education

7. Promoting a European dimension in higher education

8. Promoting the attractiveness of the European higher education area

9. Lifelong learning

10. A European higher education area

and a European research area

– two pillars of a society based

on knowledge

WHY BECOMING A DOCTOR ?

8

WHAT IS A DOCTOR ?

The PhD degree is awarded to those candidates that show:

a. The capacity for a systematic understanding of his / her specialization area.b. Skills and clear mastery of the engineering research methods.c. Autonomous capacity for conceiving, designing, adapting, and realizing

significant research, as autonomous researcher or member of a team, respecting the usual academic levels of quality, rigor and integrity.

d. Aptitude for contributing to widen the knowledge frontiers through the development of a significant amount of original research duly accredited by publication in selected international Conferences and or Scientific Journals with peer reviewing.

e. Capacity to analyze with a critical spirit, to evaluate, and to synthesize new and complex ideas in a context of fast technological and socio-organizational change.

f. Capacity to communicate with his / her peers and the academic community as well as the society in general, both at national and international levels, regarding his / her specialization area.

g. Capacity to promote, both in the academic and professional contexts, the technological, socio-economic and cultural progress under the framework of a knowledge- and collaboration-based society.

NEW REQUIREMENTS

1. Scientific training in core research skills research methodology and techniques research management, analysis & reflection problem solving scientific writing and publishing awareness of scientific ethics IPR etc.

European University Association Report www.eua.be

Training in core and transferable skills

2. Training in transferable (generic) personal and professional skills and competencies

PhD: a degree not focused on acquiring more (existing)

knowledge … but rather on how to create new knowledge

Main objective: to become a competent researcher who can do / leadindependent research in a chosen area

Learn to properly formulate a problem and apply suitable techniques to produce results that further the state of understanding about that problem

It certainly also requires deep knowledge in the chosen area, knowledge about related areas, and the experience of working on research problems

How to identify & formulate a research

question?

How to formulate a research hypothesis?

How to establish a research plan?

How to publish research results ?

How to launch and manage research projects? How to create

impact?

How to assess research results ?

And ...?

PhD GOAL

SUPERVISORS

LimitsA supervisor should not have more than 6 PhD students full-time under his/her supervision. In the case of co-supervision or part-time, each student counts 50%.

Required experience and activitySimilar to what is practiced in many other universities, the Scientific Committee considers that junior doctors without supervision experience should not start as main supervisors. Furthermore, a PhD supervisor needs to be an active researcher with adequate productivity.

Therefore, in order to qualify as main supervisor a doctor should:

Have successfully supervised / co-supervised at least one student. Have at least 2 journal papers indexed in the Science Citation Index during the

last 3 years.

Unexperienced doctors candidate to a first supervision should: Be co-supervisors (naturally in collaboration with an experienced supervisor). Have at least 2 journal papers indexed in the Science Citation Index during the

last 3 years.

NOTE: Supervisors in “red list” cannot submit new proposals to supervise new students until they solve pending issues
