PhD program at glance

Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, top-ranked among the research universities in Italy, offers a PhD course in Molecular Medicine providing excellence in science, training, guidance, and support to graduate students interested in understanding the molecular processes underlying human diseases and in designing new approaches for their treatment.

The PhD program operates within IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele (OSR), enabling the students to undergo their practical training in the hospital facilities (both clinical departments and research laboratories) and undertake a major research project in one of the OSR research laboratories.

PhD Course

ADMISSIONEligibilityThe application to the International PhD Course in Molecular Medicine can be submitted, regardless of age or citizenship, by those holding a 5-year University Degree, a Master’s Degree or an equivalent foreign academic qualification, approved by the PhD Examination Committee, according to international agreements. Final year under graduate students can apply to the PhD course, only if: they have already passed all examinations when submitting the online application - they will graduate before October 31st.

SelectionAdmission to the Course is granted on a competitive basis and is achieved through the procedure defined in the Call for Application.

In general the selection comprises two steps:• First assessment phase

The pre-selection is based on the information included in the application form and in the reference letters submitted. Candidates scoring over a threshold are shortlisted and invited for the examination in Milan or, exceptionally, will be examined via Skype.

• Second assessment phase This phase consists of an interview with the Examination Committee aimed to assess the scientific competences and aptitudes of the Students.

SUPERVISION3 tutorial profiles are established for each PhD student:• The Director of Studies (DoS) supervises and supports PhD student

throughout their PhD training, and monitors their progress.• The External Supervisor is an external expert in a field relevant to the PhD

project. S/he is expected to provide independent feedback on the project and meet with the student at least once during his/her PhD training.

• The Tutor is chosen by the coordinators of each curriculum to provide support and advice to the student on any issues that may impact on his/her professional development.

PHD COURSE ORGANIZATIONResearch projectPhD students choose their research project at enrolment.Within the first 3 months students define, in agreement with their Director of Studies, a detailed research plan, which is then shared with their External Supervisor.

Interim evaluationAt first and second year completion, PhD students present a public seminar and prepare a written report, approved by the DoS and the external supervisor, for their interim progress.The progress report will be evaluated by the coordinators of the specific curriculum with the help of the PhD board. The outcome of the evaluation will be provided to the student and the DoS.

Thesis evaluation and final exam The student, in agreement with the DoS and the second supervisor, will submit the doctoral thesis to the PhD office.The doctoral thesis is evaluated by a committee of two external reviewers and one internal reviewer (identified by the Director of Studies in agreement with the PhD course faculty board). The evaluators express a written report on the thesis and the thesis defense interview and recommend the admission to the public oral discussion or a postponement (for a period not exceeding 6 months) if significant additions or corrections are deemed necessary.The PhD title is conferred upon successful public discussion of the thesis in the presence of an ad hoc Committee nominated by the University Dean.

The campus

OSPEDALE SAN RAFFAELEOspedale San Raffaele, acknowledged by the Italian Ministry of Health as Research Hospital for “molecular medicine”, integrates basic and clinical research through a translational approach, through which laboratory discoveries translate quickly into clinical therapies and where clinical needs drive basic research.The institute aims to understand the mechanisms underlying a variety of human diseases and to identify new targets and therapeutic strategies to treat them. Among the principal clinical areas of investigation are the central and peripheral nervous systems pathologies, cancer, and immune-mediated, infectious, genetic, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.

Alongside the improvement of therapies, the institute seeks to develop new technologies in genomics and imaging, which are fundamental for early diagnosis and personalized medicine. The Institute is recognized as a global authority in cell and gene therapy, and is at the forefront of research in many other fields.

The organizational structure of the OSR Research Area consists in 4 Research Divisions, 4 Research Institutes and 4 Research Centers.

DIVISIONSImmunology, Transplantation and Infectious Diseases The Division of Immunology, Transplantation and Infectious Diseases comprises several research units, which work both on independent projects and integrated multidisciplinary programs.Studies on fundamental mechanisms underlying the immune cell physiology are performed and compared with the alterations characterizing pathological processes, aiming at both elucidating the molecular bases of diseases and defining new therapeutic strategies for a wide range of pathological conditions such as cancer, infections, autoimmunity, allergy and organ transplantation.

Neuroscience Scientists affiliated to the Division of Neuroscience work together to investigate key and hot issues in neuroscience, with emphasis on the areas of neurobiology, neuroepidemiology, neuropathology, neurophysiology, neuroimmunology, psychopathology and neuroimaging.

Experimental Oncology The focus of the Division of Experimental Oncology is to develop translational research programs and clinical research. Extensive collaborations and joint activities foster the implementation of translational research through access to a large number of patients and samples and combined resource platforms. cancer genetics cancer microenvironment; cancer immunology and immunotherapy.

Genetics and Cell Biology Cutting edge areas in the Division of Genetics and Cell Biology are the physiopathology of cell stress and iron metabolism, chromatin dynamics, genetics and epigenetics. Internationally competitive groups are working in cell adhesion, migration and polarity. Molecular mechanism underlying diseases (conformational diseases, cystic kidney disorders, neuromuscular diseases, inflammation, iron-related diseases, disorders of human reproduction, osteoporosis and bone diseases) are being investigated by many groups with robust animal and cellular models and patients’ biological samples.

INSTITUTESSan Raffaele Telethon Institute for Gene Therapy The San Raffaele Telethon Institute for Gene Therapy (SR-Tiget) is a joint venture between the Telethon Foundation and Ospedale San Raffaele.Its multi-disciplinary research environment provides a unique blend of scientific expertise in the development of innovative gene and cell therapy strategies, access to relevant preclinical models to evaluate their efficacy and safety, as well as competence in conducting early phase clinical trials.

Institute of Experimental NeurologyThe Institute of Experimental Neurology (INSPE) is one of the major European institutes primarily dedicated to translational research in neuroscience. The overall ambition is to conjugate high level of basic research with the specific competences in pre-clinical and clinical research. Inflammatory and neurodegenerative disorders of the central and peripheral nervous system, stroke, spinal cord nerve and traumatic injures represents the primary targets of the INSPE research.

Diabetes Research InstituteThe Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) is an international center of excellence for the study, prevention and treatment of diabetes. This goal is pursued through a number of clinical programs in concert with research projects, often extended to the Institute’s internal and external collaborations, especially international.

Urological Research InstituteThe Urological Research Institute (URI) studies a variety of urogenital pathologies, with a special focus on prostate, bladder and renal tumors, as well as sexual and reproductive dysfunctions. The research program aims at producing an inspiring scientific environment where clinical research and basic research in urology and urological pharmacology interact on a daily basis.

CENTERSExperimental Imaging Center The Experimental Imaging Center scientific activity covers the main areas of biomedical research, including preclinical, translational and experimental clinical research.The mission of the Center core facilities is to enable researchers at Ospedale San Raffaele to have access to the state-of-the-art imaging technology and services for their scientific research and to provide training opportunities for faculty, graduate students and staff.

Center of Advanced Services for In-Vivo Testing The Center of Advanced Services for In-Vivo Testing is a scientific and technological platform aimed at supporting R&D activities related to the validation and use of mouse models of human diseaseIt includes a vivarium for the maintenance and breeding of rodents to be used for experimental research, which operates under the conditions and guidelines established by the Federation of Laboratory Animal Science Associations (FELASA).

Services offered include:• Transgenesis• Histopathology• Hematologic testing

High Field MR CenterHigh Field MR Center (Centro Eccellenza Risonanza Magnetica Alto Campo) is a Clinical Research Center built around a last generation fully equipped 3 Tesla MR scanner.Scientific activity is mainly devoted to neurosciences including neurology, psychiatry, neuroradiology, neurosurgery, neuropsycology and cognitive neurosciences. The primary goal of the Center is to provide the clinical and scientific community of San Raffaele Institute with the state of the art imaging technology for human in vivo studies of CNS and beyond.The Center is linked to the MR-PET technology of the Nuclear Medicine Department.

The center offers:• Conventional and high resolution MR studies• Advanced high field MR studies (Diffusion, Tractography, Perfusion,

Spectroscopy ad Functional studies)• Processing and analysis of MR signals• MR-PET studies integration

SUPPORT SERVICESPhD OfficeThe PhD Office provides procedures, administrative information regarding enrolment, registrations, careers, reimbursement, and certificates and supports the PhD students during the three years.

Clinical Trial Office The Clinical Trials Office provides regulatory, administrative and methodological support, as well as educational services to internal investigators conducting clinical trials and to investigators from the affiliated institutes.

Grant OfficeThe Grant Office team assists scientists in preparing the best possible grant proposal, both by contributing to the proposal development and by taking care of the administrative burden of the project’s submission. They also make sure to regularly inform researchers about available funding opportunities both via email and on the dedicated intranet webpage.

Office of Biotechnology Transfer The Office of Biotechnology Transfer supports researchers in evaluating the commercial potential of their research and promoting relationships with industry to foster further application and development of their research results and inventions. The office takes care of material transfer agreements, patent filing, licensing, sponsored research and spin off creation.

Research Integrity OfficeThe Research Integrity Office is responsible for the development of research integrity policies and guidelines, and their implementation. They take care of developing educational and training programmes on presentation and reproducibility of scientific data (including image handling and statistics) and act as primary reference point for any internal and external complaints related to research misconduct.

Outreach and Science Communication OfficeThe Outreach and Science Communication Office aims to increase awareness about IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele research, and to promote the interaction between citizens and our basic and clinical researchers. The Office supports a broad program of outreach activities (e.g. educational activities with school or public events) with the voluntary participation of many researchers and students.

Service Center for Research (CSTOR)The Service Center for Research (Centro Servizi Tecnico-Operativi per la Ricerca) provides help on how to cope with issues related to institutional instrumentation, informatic services, building maintenance and safety.This activity is carried out in synergy with the corporate offices.

SPACESResearch and University facilities and locationsResearch laboratories and facilities are located in the following buildings: • DIBIT 1 • DIBIT 2• San Gabriele• San MicheleEach building comprises a number of meeting rooms, which are bookable through the institutional intranet.

PhD Students have also free access to the university library (1st floor, DIBIT1), which comprises a large and bright consultation center with 150 study stations, 10 online research stations and two study rooms, each with 20 workstations.

Where to eat The small building in front of the DIBIT2 hosts three campus canteens:• main hospital canteen (2nd floor)• fast food (1st floor, right wing)• free flow with bar (1st floor, left wing)A fourth canteen with bar is located in the basement floor of DIBIT1.

All the campus canteens have tiered prices for both employees and students working and studying in Ospedale San Raffaele and its university.

Distributed in the underground shopping center, as well as in other building and sectors of the hospital, there are five private bars and one Italian restaurant. Finally, for those with their own food, a specific freely available area is located in the basement floor of DIBIT1.

Shopping centrePlaced in the underground area of the campus, the shopping center Galleria delle Botteghe offers a variety of services to visitors and employees: a bookshop, an optical store, a supermarket, a hair salon, a bank, a post office, a pharmacy, a travel agency, a laundry room and flower shop.

FIRST STEPS ON CAMPUSEnrolmentCandidates awarded with a fellowship must proceed to online enrolment through the dedicated webpage, using the login credentials received at the time of online registration (http://intranet.unisr.it/esse3/Home.do) within two days from the publication of the ranking.Candidates awarded with a position without a fellowship have five days to comply.All eligible candidates have to complete the enrolment procedure, following the instructions that will provided by mail, within two working days from online enrolment. SafetyOSR members are responsible for taking care of their own safety and the safety of other people in the workplace taking into account the presence of additional risk factors specific to the laboratory environment including: high voltages, high and low temperatures, corrosive and toxic chemicals, and biohazards such as potentially infected samples, infective organisms and genetically modified organisms.

BASIC LAB SAFETY RULESThe following list is only intended as a reminder of the basic safety rules and does not substitute for the specific regulations in force at Ospedale San Raffaele.

• Do not lend your personal badge to others• Only authorized and trained staff is allowed to enter the laboratories• Never work alone in the lab, especially outside of the official working hours • Smoking is banned indoors, and outdoors in close proximity to entrance/exits• Food and/or beverages must not be stored and/or consumed in the

laboratories • Do not use lab equipment (e.g. fridges) as food containers• Materials and objects not related to research activities (e.g. coats) may not

be introduced into the laboratories• Lab coats must be worn at all times in the laboratories, complemented, if

necessary, with the adequate personal protective equipment according to existing rules

• Lab coats must not be worn in dining areas, including cafeterias and canteens

• Disposable gloves must be worn only in the laboratories. Their use is forbidden in common areas (e.g. in the elevators) if not for specific, authorized operations

• Always tie back hair that is chin-length or longer during lab activities• Never wear high-heeled and/or open-toed shoes in the laboratories.

Footwear should always completely cover the feet, including in the summer months

• Avoid wearing accessories such loosely attached foulards, ties, scarfs, dangling jewelry, which might hinder the laboratory activities

• Avoid the use of contact lenses as they can exacerbate problems if a splash gets into the eye. Alternatively, protective eyewear must be used

• Appropriate containers must be used to carry tubes and vials, not pockets or directly by holding in hand

• Do not carry in pockets sharp, or potentially sharp objects such as scissors, glass tubes etc

• Never mouth pipette, use the appropriate devices. • Do not block access to exits or emergency equipment

(e.g. fire extinguishers, hydrants, etc.)• Do not block access to electrical panels or panels containing fluid regulation

systems (gas, water, etc.)• Do not compromise the functionality of fire doors (e.g. by positioning

doorstops or tampering with the self-closing mechanisms)

• Do keep the laboratory workspace clean and tidy. Limit the presence of devices, instruments and material on benchtops. Eliminate any obsolete glassware, equipment and chemicals

• Always make sure to close bottles containing reagents when not in use• Never leave unlabeled material in the workspace• Always inform colleagues present in the laboratory when carrying out

a procedure with a specific degree of risk• Make sure to clean the instruments used and place them in stand-by after

each experiment• Always check whether specific procedures require the use of additional

safety measures (e.g. use of microwave ovens, liquid nitrogen manipulation, etc.)

• Do not leave ongoing chemical reactions unsupervised, they should be stopped in absence of trained personnel, unless there are a specific structures or procedures in place

• Never dispose chemicals into the sink or the sewage, use the appropriate containers
