On May 25, 2011, K-State Engineering was charged with an initiative to increase our number of graduates to meet the demands for engineers in Kansas. We have crafted a multi-faceted strategic plan that outlines the colleges aspirations for the future and includes growth in facilities, faculty, leadership, research and, most important, students.

To meet our unprecedented growth in enrollment, we have an opportunity to complete the final phase in the colleges engineering complex. The expansion of the building provides a unique opportunity for the College of Engineering and its graduates, friends and corporate partners to contribute toward its completion.

Located at the corner of College Heights and Denison, the structure will serve as an impressive anchor to the K-State campus and a fitting addition to the previous three construction phases Durland, Rathbone and Fiedler halls. The completion of Phase IV will set the standard for learning, outreach, research innovation and excellence.

The naming opportunities shared present a choice occasion for you to help develop our physical resources such as space for design teams, state-of-the-art classrooms, multimedia conference rooms, specialized laboratories and equipment to bring it alive. These facilities provide unique naming opportunities for honoring a loved one or promoting a corporate image.

PROJECT SUMMARYSquare footage: 107,000 sq. ft. of the new building and renovation of the front entrance of Rathbone Hall.Estimated project cost: $45 million (including construction costs, FF&E, all associated fees and contingencies).While the Phase IV expansion is working to be completely privately funded, the timeline of the project will be accelerated though the issuance of up to $20 million in bonds to be serviced through the University Engineering Initiative Act and construction contributions.The contracted Architects are Perkins+Will. They teamed with Nevius Serig Palmer Architecture (NSP) and Affiliated Engineers Inc (AEI).The Construction Managers are McCownGordon.Under the guidelines of the Kansas alternative project delivery building construction procurement act K.S.A. 75-37,141, construction manager at risk process has been selected and approved as the delivery method for the Phase IV expansion.

AREA NAMINGIncludes work bays, student shop, design team spaces, welding and paint shops

The open bays have a hoist feature above them allowing for movement or display of large, heavy projects. The bays have large, bifold hangar doors opening to showcase their models. Projects can be rolled out and displayed on temperate days. Students will be able to take advantage of a larger open space to work in. The enclosed areas provide a work space for those projects that have intricate parts and generate more dust and dirt, such as the concrete canoe. The student shop has shared tools and equipment for more efficient use of resources. The space supports K-State engineering by providing common-use space for students.

NAMING OPPORTUNITIESCourtyardThe courtyard will provide an outdoor social gathering area, further enhancing the sense of community on which the college prides itself. The grounds are not just green to the eye, but have environmentally green aspects as well. The courtyard landscape utilizes native plants and a rain garden eliminates storm water runoff. The walkway from the southwest will invite pedestrians into the new building and the courtyard. It is meant to be both a learning and a reflective place.

K-12 Outreach/Embedded Systems Lab 2227The research focus in this area is on distributed, fault-tolerant, real-time embedded systems. This lab also hosts the National Science Foundation (NSF) GK-12 program whose goal is to enhance the usefulness, practicality and relevance of sensor technology in education by linking sensor research with Kansas high school science and technology curriculum, and provide communication and research opportunities in sensor technology for graduate students in engineering. This lab consists of sensor equipment, computers and handheld devices, and has office space for graduate students.


Knowledge, Discovery & Database (KDD) Lab 2226Researchers in this lab are interested in machine learning, data mining and knowledge discovery from large spatial and temporal databases, human-computer intelligent interaction (HCII), and high-performance computation in learning and optimization. This lab engages a number of graduate and undergraduate students in research.


Robotics Lab 2224Teams from the lab have placed first, second and third in the annual AAAI robotics competitions. This lab consists of a collection of robots with wide ranges of capabilities, and has office space for students.


Bioinformatics Lab 2223The lab will be used to design algorithms and to develop tools for analyzing large amounts of data, in particular, molecular sequence and gene expression data. Researchers from this lab collaborate with researchers in bioinformatics and genomics at K-State. This lab consists of office space for graduate students and a meeting area.


Security Lab 2193This lab focuses on research in privacy, anonymity, censorship resistance and network security. Recently, this lab has focused on security of distributed medical systems and cyber-physical systems. Apart from workstations, this lab consists of office space for students and a meeting area.


Cyber Defense Lab (Argus Lab) 2208This lab focuses on both fundamental and applied research to address cybersecurity challenges. The Center for Information and Systems Assurance (CISA) is located in this lab and has been designated as a National Center for Academic Excellence in Security by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. The lab also hosts the Cyber Defense Club whose goal is to train students and build a community of students interested in cybersecurity. This lab consists of a collection of machines to train students in cyber-defense/offense techniques.


Multi-Agent Robotics Lab 2194The robotics laboratory supports research into software engineering applications to build robust, autonomous robotics software, including multi-agent solutions.


High Assurance Lab 2206The mission of the Laboratory for Static Analysis and Transformation of Software (SAnToS) is to develop foundational techniques, robust tools and practical integrated methodologies for building safety and security critical software systems. Since its founding, SAnToS has received over $13 million in funding from national agencies such as the NSF, DARPA, NASA, DOD and industry groups at Lockheed Martin, Rockwell Collins, Intel, IBM and Honeywell. This lab consists of student/post-doc office spaces and a group meeting space.

Burns & McDonnell Smart Grid Lab (SGL) 2186

This is a lab that supports both research and teaching in the broad area known as the Smart Grid. With generous support from industry, the lab is well equipped with modern power distribution switching and control equipment as well as the related network communications equipment to study modern problems in the Smart Grid. Besides research projects, students in multiple classes will utilize the lab to enhance their learning experience.

Power Electronics Lab 2187This will primarily be a laboratory to conduct research on power electronics, which is currently focused on converters and controllers for renewable energy generation and electric vehicles. This lab consists of benches for the electronics development as well as a desk area for students to do their other work.


Intro to Computer Engineering Lab 2188Students in ECE 241 (Introduction to Computer Engineering), have exclusive access to this high use lab (140 students per semester). This class/lab serves freshmen in computer engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science. Tables with computers and development boards are used to support up to 16 students at any given time. The lab will be available 24/7.


Microcontrollers Lab 2189This is a lab dedicated to the microcontrollers class which serves approximately 70 students per semester. Computer engineering students take classes in microcontrollers as do most electrical engineering students. Benches with test equipment are used to support up to 14 students at any given time. The lab will be available 24/7.


Microprocessor Lab 2191This lab supports the embedded systems area of emphasis in computer engineering. Courses offered include Real-Time Embedded Systems during the fall semester and Microcomputer Systems Design and Real-Time Embedded Systems Design both offered during the spring semester. There are approximately 40 students per year who use the lab. Benches with test equipment are used to support up to 20 students at any given time. The lab will be available 24/7.


Digital Systems Lab 2192The space is used as a digital hardware and DSP lab for primary use by advanced level undergraduates and graduate students. The lab supports four courses: Adv. Digital Design, Computer Engineering Design Lab, Digital Signal Processing Lab and Computer Design II. Benches with test equipment will support up to 14 students at any given time. The lab will be available 24/7.

WiCom Research Group 3066The WiCom group supports a wide range of fundamental and applied research in the areas of wireless communication and information processing. The core expertise of the group is in mathematical/statistical modeling, estimation and detection/decision theory, optimization and control theory, and information theory.


Sunflower Networking Group & EPICENTER 3064The Sunflower Networking Group conducts theoretical research in emerging areas and to apply optimal networking solutions to current and future realistic problems through simulations. General areas of interest include networking protocols, architecture, modeling and analysis, and networking solutions for smart grids. Kansas State Universitys EPICENTER provides resources to analyze, build and simulate mathematical models for spreading phenomena in complex networks. One of the main goals of EPICENTER is providing policymakers with real-time, flexible modeling tools to curtail epidemiological outbreaks, whether it occurs in humans, animals, plants or computers.

Biomedical Suite 3098This lab develops medical components to assist with the health care of both humans and animals. In one area of the lab both undergraduate and graduate students develop physiological sensors and related systems to improve future medical care options. The other area of this lab currently focuses on new treatment technologies, especially for cancer patients using non-invasive thermal ablation of tumors. Yet another project involves the use of micro-bubbles to deliver medication to very localized areas of the body.


ECE Computer Lab 3071This is a general purpose computer lab that serves all ECE students, undergraduate and graduate. It is intended to provide students 20 workstations and is a high-usage space. Each workstation has all specialized software used in ECE courses and labs that is typically not found on other university computers. The lab will be available 24/7.


Wireless Hardware Lab 3069This research space is dedicated to faculty and students (undergraduate and graduate) working on wireless hardware research projects.
