Pharma companies push to remain in UK as EU members

Pharma companies have urged the government to push for them to remain in the UK as members of the EU’s medicines regulatory body. The move follows calls for the UK’s chemicals and aviation industries to continue to be regulated by EU agencies, keeping them within Europe’s standards and safety regime and under the auspices of the European Court of Justice. Pharma industry leaders have warned of the consequences for patients in both the UK and Europe if some form of regulatory harmonisation cannot be achieved. About 45m packs of medicines are supplied from the UK to other European countries each month, while more than 37m packs come from Europe to the UK.

focus was to January 2018

Approved funding for GP based pharmacists

Funding for 160 additional GP surgery based pharmacists has been approved by NHS England, they will be able to offer patients medical advice and treatment. This will increase the number of clinical pharmacists in general practice from around 580 to over 1,100, covering 40 percent of surgeries in the country and nearly 34 million patients.

Increasing pharmacist’s presence in surgeries should help to relieve some of the pressure on GPs and free up their time for those patients with the greatest need and most complex conditions.

Hospitals in US come together to form pharmaceutical company

Shortages are a worldwide problem.

Three hundred hospitals in the US have formed their own pharmaceutical company in order to fight high drug prices and other industry issues.

There has been a chronic shortage at hospitals of hundreds of essential drugs - sodium bicarbonate and morphine, due to only a couple of manufacturers make them and therefore are significantly in-creasing their prices.

Price Watch ……….UK

Topiramate tops December UK price rises Topiramate tablets in four strengths topped the December 2017 list for the fastest-rising UK trade prices, according to the latest figures provided by WaveData. The 60-tablet packs of 25mg, 50mg, 100mg and 200mg tablets experienced average price leaps of between 148% and 419%, despite the cheapest available prices seeing only doubledigit increases (see Figure 2). UK startup to develop flu jab UK-based start-up Vaccitech is celebrating after raising £20m in funding lead by Google’s venture capital arm, GV (Google Ventures). The group has now raised £30 million since its inception in 2016 to help progress its pipeline, which contains six products based on inducing cellular immune responses using non-replicating viral vectors for treatment or prophylaxis against diseases at various stages. Google is investing in UK start-up as it wants to cure the flu and prostate cancer. To read more https://www.standard.co.uk/tech/google-investment-oxford-health-startup-a3740346.html

What’s ahead for generics?

The FDA approved 765 generic drugs as of mid-December 17, greater than the 630 inexpensive generics approved in 2016 and making 2017 the industry’s most productive of the last five years by far. So for 2018, Analysts are warning of more pricing woes ahead, however, executives of companies making generic drugs remain largely optimistic, as they point to regulatory and market trends that they believe portend a healthy outlook for the industry.
