Bienvenidos a otra edición de la Revista LIFE. Este es un mo-
mento muy emocionante para El Centro Inglés mientras
avanzamos a toda máquina con nuestro Plan Estratégico
2014-18. El Colegio rebosa desarrollo, innovación y
consolidación. La revista LIFE es una gran oportunidad para
mantener a todos informados sobre las últimas noticias y logros
en el Colegio.
Esta edición está dedicada a nuestro amigo D. Julio, que nos dejó,
demasiado pronto, durante el verano, pero que siempre será
recordado en El Centro Inglés como el gran profesor, profesio-
nal, padre y persona que era. Durante su tiempo con nosotros
aportó ritmo y color a nuestras celebraciones y a nuestro día a
día con su música, sus historias y su increíble sentido del humor.
En la sección de Comunidad podrán encontrar algunos recuerdos
sobre D. Julio de algún ex alumno que estuvo con él en la banda
del Colegio.
Estamos encantados de poder presentarles a Mrs. Randell Jr. en
su nuevo cargo como representante de la Titularidad del Cen-
tro. Esperamos que todos tengan la oportunidad de conocerla
muy pronto en los eventos del Colegio y nos complace tener una
representante de la familia que asegure nuestra presencia en el
mayor número de eventos posibles.

Welcome to another edition of LIFE magazine. What an exci-
ting time it is at The English Centre as we move full steam
ahead with our strategic plan for 2014-18. The school is
buzzing with development, innovation and consolidation.
Our LIFE magazine is a great opportunity to keep every-
body updated on the latest news and developments in the school.
This edition is dedicated to our friend D. Julio, who left us, too soon,
over the summer but who will always be remembered at The English
Centre as a great teacher, professional, father and person. Throughout
his time with us he added rhythm and colour to our celebrations and
our day to day with his music, stories and a cracking sense of humour.
In the community section you can find some memories of D. Julio from
an ex-pupil who was in the school band with him.
We are delighted to present Mrs Randell Jr. in her new position as
representative of the school owners. We hope you all get the chance
to meet Mrs Randell Jr. at school events in the near future and we are
delighted to have a representative from our family to ensure we can
attend as many events as possible.

Becas EuropaNuestra alumna Gemma
González Hernández, de 2º de
Bachillerato, sigue luchando
para clasificarse entre los
primeros 50 alumnos que
optan a las Becas Europa. A
esta edición, organizada por
la Universidad Francisco de
Vitoria, se han presentado más
de mil alumnos. Gemma ya ha pasado las tres primeras fases y está
a la espera de asistir un fin de semana a Madrid para convivir con
otros jóvenes y desarrollar diferentes actividades que le permitan
ser seleccionada finalmente para disfrutar de una de las Becas. ¡Te
deseamos lo mejor, Gemma!
European ScholarshipGemma González Hernández, a Baccalaureate II pupil, is still fighting
to classify amongst the top 50 pupils opting for the Scholarships.
Over one thousand pupils have been put for this edition organised
by Francisco de Vitoria University. Gemma has passed the first three
stages and the last stage in the selection process is a weekend in
Madrid to meet other finalists and carry out different activities. We
wish you all the best Gemma!
Sor Aguilar Lucía Naveiro Grande, alumna de 1º de Bachillerato, fue la
ganadora del Primer Premio del Certamen de Relatos Cortos
Memorial Sor Aguilar en su pasada edición. La entrega del Premio
se celebró en el mes de junio y Lucía contó con la presencia de
familiares, profesores y compañeros en esta ocasión tan emotiva.
Lucia Naveiro Grande, a Baccalaureate 1 pupil, won the First Prize in
the last edition of the Sor Aguilar Memorial Short Stories Contest. The
Prize giving took place in June and Lucia’s family was there as well as
teachers and fellow pupils to celebrate such a moving occasion.

II International Youth Scientific Congress Closing CeremonyJorge Barallobre Soto, Baccalaureate 1,

different countries that took part in this
international congress held in Madrid in
October. Speaking to pupils from Germany,
Belgium, Denmark, Slovenia, Italy, The
Netherlands etc., Jorge demonstrated his
high level of spoken English.

del Primer Premio del Concurso

Salvador Torres, de 3º de ESO, han obtenido el Primer
Premio de su categoría en el Concurso Nacional sobre
Blas de Lezo, convocado por la Asociación Cultural para
la divulgación de la Hispanidad con sede en Cantabria y al
que se han presentado más de cuatro mil trabajos. Desde
la Asociación felicitan al Centro por el alto nivel de los
trabajados remitidos, todo un orgullo.
Celia García García, alumna de 6º de EPO, ha obtenido el
Segundo Premio en el Concurso de murales convocado por
la Delegación Provincial de la Agencia Tributaria de Cádiz,
dentro de su programa de educación Cívico Tributaria.
Carmen Giménez Prieto, from Baccalaureate II and Julia Salvador Torres, from year 9, obtained first prizes in their categories in the National Blas de Lezo Competition, organised by the Cultural Association to promove Spanish Heritage, with over four thousand entries presented. We are proud to say the Association congratulated the School for the high standards of the entries.

Resultados de Selectividad, camino a la Excelencia Tanto en la convocatoria de junio como en la de septiembre
ha aprobado el 100% de los alumnos, destacando el alto
porcentaje de sobresalientes en
distintas disciplinas. Una prueba
de la profesionalidad del equipo
y el esfuerzo de los alumnos es el
dato que refleja que entre las notas
medias de los alumnos de 2º de
Bachillerato y la nota media de los
resultados en las PAU solo existe
una diferencia mínima de 0,09. Estos
resultados han permitido que todos
los alumnos accedan a los estudios
superiores que deseaban.
La Comunidad Educativa de El Centro Inglés se congratula de
tales logros, y aprovecha para dar la más sincera enhorabuena a
su alumnado, al profesorado y a las familias que durante tantos
años confían en nosotros.
University Entrance Results, the path to ExcellenceThe English Centre is very proud of the pupils who took their University
Entrance exams in June and September achieving a 100% pass rate.
The high rate of outstanding grades in
different areas was remarkable. A clear
indicator of our Staff’s professionalism
and our pupils’ effort is the difference
between the average grades for
Baccalaureate and the University
Entrance Exam, a mere 0.09. These
results have meant that our pupils
have been able to access the Higher
Education Courses of their choice.
The English Centre Educational Community is very pleased with these
results and would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our

Nuevo CapellánEste año contamos con la presencia de un nuevo Capellán, D. Antonio Sabido Salguero, actual Párroco de
La Palma. En sus funciones atenderá espiritualmente a los alumnos que requieran su ayuda, se hará presente
en las catequesis de Comunión y Confirmación y presidirá los actos religiosos que se celebren en el Centro.
This year we have a new Chaplain, Father Antonio Sabido Salguero, the Parish Priest of La Palma Church. Amongst
his tasks, he will be taking spiritual care of those pupils who might need his help, be present at the Confirmation and
Communion services and officiate at the religious ceremonies held at School.

con el colegio Warlum Gymnasium, cerca de Dortmand, en Alemania. El segundo,
con el colegio Academia Stanchester, cerca de Bristol, en Inglaterra. Esperamos
desarrollar estos acuerdos lo antes posible para poder ofrecerles más información.
ExchangesWe are delighted to announce two new exchanges in Secondary. One in Germany
near Dortmund with a school called Walrum Gymnasium and one in England near
Bristol with a school called Stanchester Academy. We look forward to giving you
more news as the partnerships develop.

En 1615, por el mismo editor e imprenta, se publica la segunda
parte de El Quijote: El ingenioso caballero Don Quijote de La Mancha.
Una segunda parte, setenta y cuatro capítulos, repleta de
aventuras con un Don Quijote triste y desengañado que ganará
batallas, se proclamará vencedor Caballero de los Leones, y
finalizará volviendo a su pueblo, ya como Alonso Quijano, con
juicio y pleno de cordura.
La Comisión de Ocio y Cultura, junto a todos los miembros de El
Centro Inglés, celebrará este especial aniversario con actividades
y lecturas.
Dentro de las actividades programadas para este 400.º
aniversario contamos con la lectura de la obra en 6º EPO y 3º
de ESO, Presentación del autor en la biblioteca, la obra del Taller
de Teatro de 1º y 2º Bachillerato ( musical sobre El Quijote) , la
temática de los concursos para el Eisteddfod y trabajos para
conocer a los diferentes personajes de la obra en todas las Etapas.

El ingenioso caballero Don Quijote de La Mancha, the second part
of El Quijote was published by the same editor and printer In 1615.
A second part, seventy two chapters, full of adventures with a sad
and disillusioned Don Quijote who will win battles, be proclaimed
victorious Caballero de los Leones, and return to his home town, by
then known as Alonso Quijano, lucid and in good mental health.
The Culture and Leisure Commission, together with The English Centre
Staff, will celebrate this special anniversary with a series of activities
and readings. Among the activities organised to celebrate this 400th
anniversary include: a joint reading by Primary Year 6 pupils and
Year 9 Secondary pupils, Presentation of the author in the library, El
Quijote-the musical- performed by the Baccalaureate 1&2 pupils as
part of the Theatre Workshop, it will be the Eisteddfod competition
theme, and activities to get to know the different characters of this
book in all the Key Stages.

Novedades en el International Curriculum
El Currículum Internacional comienza el curso con muy buen pie. El tiempo adicional dedicado al Currículum Internacional en 3º y 4º de Primaria permite que los alumnos puedan reforzar su lenguaje y expandir su conocimiento y su creatividad. Es fabuloso comprobar que toda Primaria trabaja del mismo modo a través de Topic y Literacy.
Los alumnos de 5º de Primaria has estado estudiando todo lo relacionado con el medioambiente en Keen to be Green (Con ganas de ser verdes) y han compartido sus ideas a través de las exposiciones. Mientras tanto, los alumnos de 6º de Primaria han estado aprendiendo sobre América y han creado unos increíbles tótems.Pronto realizarán un Tour Virtual. Todos los alumnos han tenido la posibilidad de disfrutar de diversos tipos de poesía, desde el slam a la clásica, y de la escritura creativa en distintos géneros. Los alumnos disfrutan compartiendo su conocimiento y creatividad a través de asambleas y actuaciones para que todos vean lo que han creado. El Programa de Trabajo de TIC , que está implantado desde Infantil hasta 6º de Primaria, ha sido completamente actualizado a través de Switched On Computing Rising Stars. Los cambios en la tecnología conllevan que los alumnos aprendan a programar, crear animaciones y apps desde una edad temprana. Es maravilloso ver a nuestros alumnos más jóvenes crear utilizando algoritmos básicos. Los cursos de 1º a 4º de Primaria disfrutan ahora de un nuevo elemento en su currículum, la Tarde de Actividades, durante las cuales trabajan en grupos reducidos con un miembro del personal aprendiendo y desarrollando nuevas capacidades, probando tareas nuevas, como tejer, en 1º y 2º, y Ajedrez en 3º y 4º. Todos están disfrutando y aprendiendo, además es una gran oportunidad para que el personal y los alumnos se puedan relacionar fuera del entorno de una clase o grupo. Aquí podemos apreciar cómo los alumnos de Infantil trabajan con los IPAD. El personal asistió a un curso específicamente diseñado para asegurar que el Ipad se utiliza como un recurso de aprendizaje positivo. Es una herramienta muy motivadora para los más pequeños, desde los alumnos de 2 años, que pueden aplicar y consolidar el aprendizaje a través de apps especializados que han sido seleccionados para apoyar al Programa de Trabajo de Infantil. Existen muchas otras habilidades trabajadas con el Ipad, control, motricidad fina y gruesa, orientación espacial, y muchos otros. Tanto los alumnos como el personal la consideran una gran herramienta.El Ipad se utilizan en todas las áreas curriculares de Educación Infantil.Nuestros alumnos incluso han disfrutado viendo a Mr. Bull contar el cuento del Gruffalo a través de Facetime.

Whats New in the International Curriculum
The International Curriculum has got off to a very good start this year. The additional time allocated to the International Curriculum in Years 3 & 4 has meant that they can reinforce their language and extend their knowledge and creativity. It is marvellous to see all of Primary working in the same way through Topic and Literacy. Year 5s have been studying the environment in Keen to Be Green and have shared their ideas
through display. Meanwhile Year 6s have been learning all about the Americas and have created some incredible Totem Poles. They are soon off on a virtual Tour. All pupils have been able to experience different types of poetry from Slam to Classic and creative writing in different genres. Children enjoy sharing their knowledge and creativity through assemblies and performance so that we can all see what they have been doing. The ICT programme of study has been completely updated through Switched On Computing, Rising Stars which is now in place from Early Years to Year 6. The changes in technology mean that pupils need to learn how to programme, create animations and apps from an early age. It is marvellous to see our younger pupils creating and using basic algorithms.The Year 1s to 4 now have a new element in their curriculum, Activity Afternoon. Here pupils work with a member of staff in small groups learning and developing new skills, trying out new things - like weaving for the 1s & 2s, and Chess for the 3s & 4s. Everyone is having fun and learning, it is also a lovely opportunity for staff and pupils to create relationships which are not limited to the classroom or group. Have you seen how well our Early Years pupils work with the IPAD. Staff underwent specific training in order to ensure that the IPad is used as a positive learning resource. It is a very motivating tool for our little ones, the 2s up, who can practice and consolidate learning through specialised apps that have been chosen to support the Early Years programmes of study. There are also a lot of associated skills which are supported by the IPad, tracking, fine and gross motor skills, spatial awareness and many more. Both Staff & pupils think it is a great learning tool. The Ipad is used in all areas of the Early Years Curriculum and our pupils have even watched Mr Bull reading the Gruffalo to them on Facetime which they thoroughly enjoyed. PlaymakersLos alumnos de 6º de Primaria trabajan sus capacidades
de comunicación y liderazgo a través de Playmakers. Era
el turno este trimestre de trabajar la unidad de estudio
sobre el fútbol. A cada entrenador se le asignó un grupo
y debían crear una sesión sobre Habilidades futbolísticas
para las chicas. Fue fantástico ver cuán pacientes eran
los chicos. Será interesante ver cómo seguimos el
trimestre próximo, cuando las chicas estén entrenando a
los chicos en voleibol. Pero, ¿qué piensan los alumnos?
Chicas: “Creo que fue divertido, y había gran variedad de
actividades. Julio y Carlos eran nuestros entrenadores,
e instalaron conos para nuestra actividad. Nos gustó
porque aprendimos y nos divertimos.”
Chicos: “Creo que entrenar a las chicas en fútbol fue muy
gracioso. Algunas de ellas no parecían interesadas, pero
lo hicieron muy bien. Fue algo complicado explicarles el
ejercicio, pero fue una gran idea. ¡Me encanta!”
Year 6s are working on their leadership and communication
skills through the Playmakers awards. It was the boys turn
this term working on the Football unit of study. Each coach
was assigned a group and they had to create a Football skills
session for the girls. It was great to see how patient the boys
were. It will be interesting how they get on next term where
the girls will be coaching the boys in Volleyball. But what do
the pupils think?
Girls: I think it was good fun and there were a variety of
activities. Julio and Carlos were our coaches and they put
out cones for our activity. We liked it because we learned a
little bit and had fun.
Boys: I think that to coach the girls football was quite funny.
Some of them didn’t seem interested but they did it very well.
It was a bit difficult explaining the exercises to them, but it
was a great idea. I love it!
Curso Práctico y Teórico de Educación Física 3o ESOLos alumnos de 3º de ESO comienzan un Nuevo programa de Educación
Física este curso y este es parecido al curso breve de GCSE. Este está
formado por elementos prácticos y teóricos y los alumnos se examinarán
sobre el tema en el último trimestre del año académico. El curso se centra
en “el participante activo” y los diversos papeles prácticos dentro del
deporte. Los alumnos pueden ser evaluados en la ejecución práctica
como jugador, entrenador o miembro del equipo técnico y les permite
seleccionar su papel preferido y así determinar su rama dentro del curso
de Educación Física.
La parte teórica del curso proporciona al alumno una mejor comprensión
y la oportunidad de profundizar en el mundo del deporte. En particular,
estudia las exigencias de los participantes activos, las razones por las
que las personas participan en un deporte o la importancia del deporte
en distintas culturas. El curso también evalúa el estado general de salud
del alumno y presenta los beneficios vitalicios de un estilo de vida sano y
activo.
P.E. Practical and Theoretical Course 3ºThe pupils in 3 ESO have started a new PE programme this year. They are
following a course similar to that of the GCSE PE short course. The course has
both practical and theoretical elements to it and the pupils will sit a 1hr exam
during the summer term. The course is centred around "the active participant"
and the various practical roles within sport. This means that pupils can be
graded on their practical performance as a player, coach or official. This allows
the pupils to choose their preferred role and determine their own path through
the PE course.
The theoretical part of the course gives the pupils a greater understanding and
in-depth look at the world of sport. In particular, it looks at the demands made
on active participants, the reasons why people participate in sport and what
part sport plays within different cultures. The course also looks at the pupils’
general health and wellbeing and looks at the lifelong benefits of having a
healthy, active lifestyle.

Ahora que en El Centro Inglés estamos más que nunca “mirando
al futuro”, queremos redoblar nuestro compromiso con los valores,
emplear mejor nuestros recursos, dar un nuevo empuje, una nueva
orientación a la formación de niños y jóvenes comprometidos,
solidarios, generosos; futuros ciudadanos, profesionales,

del Plan de Acción Tutorial de las tres etapas y de la Comisión
de Responsabilidad Social. Ahora más que nunca, estamos

Education in values, combined with cultural and intellectual
education, is the basic mission for any educational institution, and
especially for our educational institution, The English Centre. When
our pupils move on to University they take with them not only when
their knowledge and experience but also their values, a way of
behaving.
They finally make, their way to University they do not only carry a
back pack full of knowledge and experiences, but also full of values, of
a particular manner and poise.
At The English Centre we are more than ever “Looking to the future”,
we aim to double our commitment to values, to make better use of
our resources, to work even harder. This is the spirit “Our Values Are
Who We Are” project is born with, full of excitement and renewed
energy. Over the next four years through the Tutorial Action Plan
within the three stages and the Social Responsibility Committee, we
plan to develop a series of projects and initiatives that will mean a new
approach for our School’s education in values. Now more than ever, we

The International Curriculum is setting up a Virtual Learning Community for our pupils across all the sections of our school in order to give them the opportunity of working with others from different countries and education systems. The idea is that we form links with different schools and carry out activities and projects together. This is a new initiative but it is already up and running with several schools involved. Year 2 pupils have prepared letters to send to children in the same year group in Devon and Cornwall and Aloha College (a British School in Spain) has contacted us regarding bi-lingual correspondence via email for our Year 3s. We have also contacted a school in the USA.
For our older pupils, 3º ESO, we have been working with The Dolomites Sports College in Italy to design a collaborative History Project. Representatives of the College visited last year and the seeds were sown. Mr Fairtlough visited in November and the project design for this year was mapped out. The project supports the ECI History Programme with the initial topic from Italy being The Trenches and our pupils will prepare a guidebook Evidence of the Romans in our Local area. Full advantage will be taken of our ICT infrastructure so that pupils can communicate by video conference & email.
El Currículum Internacional está preparando para nuestros alumnos una Comunidad Virtual de Aprendizaje de todas las áreas del Colegio y así darles la oportunidad de trabajar con alumnos de diversos países y sistemas educativos. La idea consiste en formar alianzas con distintos colegios y llevar a cabo actividades y proyectos juntos. Esta es una iniciativa nueva, pero ya funcional con varios colegios involucrados.Los alumnos de 2º de Primaria han preparado cartas para enviar a niños/as de la misma edad en Devon, Cornwall y Aloha College (colegio Británico en España), con los que ya hemos contactado para mantener correspondencia bilingüe por email con nuestros alumnos de 3º de Primaria. También hemos contactado con un colegio en EEUU. Para nuestro alumnos mayores de 3º de ESO, hemos trabajado con el Dolomites Sports College, en Italia, para diseñar un proyecto colaborativo de Historia. Representantes de este colegio ya nos visitaron el curso anterior y las semillas se plantaron. Mr. Fairtlough nos visitó el pasado mes de noviembre y establecimos el diseño del proyecto para este curso. Este apoya el Programa de Historia de ECI donde el tema central inicial de Italia es “Las Trincheras” y nuestros alumnos prepararán una Guía de Evidencias de la estancia de los romanos en nuestra área local. Nos beneficiaremos enormemente de la gran infraestructura informática para que los alumnos puedan comunicarse por vídeo conferencia y correo electrónico.

Pues sí. El curso escolar 2013/14 finalizó
con la jubilación de tres personas que, por
su valía y profesionalidad, han reforzado
durante muchos años el estilo directo,
sencillo y motivador de llevar a cabo la
educación en nuestro Colegio. Muchos han sido
los alumnos que han recibido sus sugerencias
y enseñanzas, algunos aún en el Centro y otros
muchos ejerciendo sus menesteres profesionales
y familiares.
Continua ha sido vuestra aportación del grano
de arena, generador de pilares sólidos en la
estructura y filosofía educacional del Centro,
y enriquecedora vuestra actitud diaria de la
que nosotros, vuestros compañeros, hemos
disfrutado y aprendido durante tanto tiempo.
Os echamos de menos a todas. A ti, Madame
Colette, por ser “une personne excelente et un
trésor por tes collégues”. A ti, Señorita Tana, por
tu dinamismo y por el carácter tan extrovertido
y cordial que siempre te ha acompañado. A ti,
querida Señorita María José, por ser el exponente
absoluto de lo que ha de ser en todo momento
una compañera amiga y una maestra.
A las tres, enhorabuena. Continuamos contando
con vuestro cariño, seguro, y, por reciprocidad, os
seguiremos proporcionando el nuestro, porque la
jubilación es únicamente un proceso de cambio
en materia laboral. Si habéis sido siempre un

The academic year 2013/14 ended with the
retirement of three people that, due to their
worth and professionalism, have supported
many years the direct, simple and motivating
way to educate in our School. Many were the
pupils to receive their suggestions and teachings,
some still in School and others leading a fulfilling
professional and family life.
Your contribution with your grain of sand has been
a constant, generator of solid pillars to the School
structure and educational philosophy, and your
everyday attitude and enrichment that us, your
colleagues, have enjoyed and learned from for such a
long time.
We will miss you all. We will miss you Madame
Colette, for being “une personne excelente et un
trésor por tes collégues”. We will miss you Señorita
Tana, for being so dynamic and for the extrovert and
friendly character you always have. We will miss you,
Señorita María José, for always being the absolute
example of what a friend, colleague and teacher must

Cada año, el Coro de 6º de Primaria visita el DGF Elementary School de la Base Naval de Rota. Es una experiencia realmente enriquecedora pues la música, el intercambio de culturas y el idioma se hacen uno, proporcionando una jornada perfecta. Nuestros alumnos regalan un concierto de villancicos populares anglosajones, detalle que agradece el auditorio americano que nos escucha. La presentación en inglés del concierto y de cada
obra corre a cargo de diferentes alumnos de nuestro Coro. Para finalizar esta actividad, interpretamos un par de villancicos andaluces que ponen en pie a todos los asistentes, los cuales intentan acompañarnos con la intención de seguir el compás.Al concluir el concierto, nuestros alumnos almuerzan y conviven con los chicos de su edad, comunicándose en inglés de forma natural y disfrutando de la amabilidad de este centro anfitrión que todos los años nos abre sus puertas.
Rota Naval Base Christmas ConcertEvery year, the Primary Year 6 Choir visits the Rota Naval Base D.G.F High School. It is a highly rewarding experience to see how music, cultural exchanges and language become one, ensuring a perfect day. Our pupils give a traditionally English Carol concert, that is thoroughly enjoyed by our American audience. The concert as well as every performed piece is presented in English by different
Choir members. To bring the concert to an end, we perform a couple of Andalusian carols which brings the audience to their feet as they clap to the rhythm. Once the concert is over, our pupils have lunch and spend time with other children their age, communicating in English in a very natural manner and enjoying the kindness this host School always offers opening their doors to us every year.
Concierto de navidad en la Base Naval de Rota
Halloween en El Centro Inglés se ha convertido en un momento del año muy especial. Aunque celebramos el lado más tradicional de Halloween, los espectros y fantasmas, también ponemos atención en cómo damos la bienvenida al otoño. Esto significa que al igual que nos disfrazamos y disfrutamos
de asambleas en Infantil, los alumnos de Primaria y Secundaria disfrutan de las castañas asadas en el patio. En Infantil, durante las asambleas celebradas en esta época, cantan canciones y bailan danzas tradicionales de Halloween. En la biblioteca se celebra una competición de Halloween que se ha convertido en uno de los eventos favoritos de los alumnos de Primaria y Secundaria con cientos de inscripciones cada año. Se compite por presentar el mejor poema y el mejor dibujo, y los resultados son increíblemente imaginativos y muestras de un gran nivel de inglés. Así pues, lejos de dar miedo, Halloween en El Centro Inglés es una ocasión para celebrar el otoño, para la música y el baile, para el arte y la poesía y para las tradiciones internacionales.
Halloween at The English Centre has become a very special time of year. Although we celebrate the more traditional ghosts and ghouls side of Halloween there is a focus on the welcoming of autumn. This means that as well as dressing up and having assemblies in Early Years, we also have roast chestnuts in the
playground for Primary and Secondary pupils. In Early Years there are assemblies which celebrate this time of year with traditional songs and dances.In the library there is a Halloween competition that has become a favourite of pupils in Primary and Secondary with hundreds of entries every year. The competition is for the best poems and pictures and the results are incredibly imaginative and full of great English.So, far from being scary, Halloween at The English Centre is a time for celebrating autumn, for music and dance, for art and poetry and of International traditions.

D. Julio, in memoriam
“La Habana es Cádiz con más negritos, Cádiz es la Habana con más salero…”Como los cantos de ida y vuelta, llegaste a nuestro Colegio llenando nuestras vidas de rumbas, guajiras y azúcar, mucha azúcar. D. Julio, músico de músicos, maestro de maestros, gran compañero y amigo. Dudo que exista persona alguna que hayas tratado a la que no le hayas arrancado una gran risa inesperada o le hayas dejado reflexiva con tus vivencias… Tu alegría, optimismo y afán de superación con cada reto que afrontabas llenaban cada rincón de nuestro Colegio y cada segundo de los innumerables actos en los que has participado. Este curso, esos rincones están algo más vacíos y en los actos echamos de menos esa pizca de “caribe” en el aire pero, y será por defecto profesional, me quedo con lo aprendido. Toda la Comunidad Educativa de El Centro Inglés tiene motivos para sentirse orgullosa de haber tenido el privilegio de conocerte. Cada pensamiento, idea o acción tuya estaba respaldada y argumentada por la experiencia de una vida rica en vivencias en todos los ámbitos. Todos nos hemos enriquecido estando a tu lado.Hoy, mientras me tiembla la mano al escribir estas palabras, me hago fuerte para rellenar cada rincón vacío que dejaste, porque la mayor lección que nos has dado es que ahora, justo ahora, es el mejor momento para ser felices, ya que es el que tenemos. Por caprichos del destino, quizás, las últimas obras que montamos con nuestros alumnos al finalizar el curso pasado fueron “Bésame mucho”, “Sevillana del adiós” y “Lágrimas negras”. Músicas que hoy cobran un gran significado y que usaré pare decirte: D. Julio, maestro, compañero, amigo. Es cierto que algo se muere en el alma cuando un amigo se va. Con lágrimas negras en mis sueños te colmo de bendiciones. Gracias por enseñarnos a actuar como si fuera esta noche la última vez.

Julio, musician of all musicians, master of masters, great colleague and friend. I very much doubt if there is anyone who you met and did not manage to steal a smile from, or left them pondering on your experiences… Your happiness, optimism and desire for self-improvement with every challenge you faced, filled every corner of our School and every second of the uncountable events you took part in. This year, those corners are somewhat empty and in our events we will miss that little bit of the “Caribbean” in the air but, and it may well be a professional defect, what was learned remains with me. The whole English Centre Educational Community has reason to be proud to have had the privilege of meeting you. Every one of your thoughts, ideas or actions was backed up and supported by the knowledge of a life rich in experience in all aspects. We have all been enriched by you. Today, as my hand shakes while I write these words, I make myself strong to fill every empty corner you left, because the best lesson you gave us is that now, exactly now, is the time to be happy, it is the time we have. As fate would have it, maybe, one of the last events we put together for our pupils at the end of last year was Besame mucho, Sevillana del adiós and Lágrimas negras. Pieces today that gain greater meaning and I will use to say to you: D. Julio, teacher, colleague, friend. It is true something dies within our soul when a friend parts. With black tears in my dreams I shower you with blessings. Thank you for showing us how to perform as if this night were the last one.

D. Julio, in memoriam
recuerdos de un ANTIGUO ALUMNO
Para cualquier persona que no lo conociera, seguro que
ya ha quedado claro lo importante que era Julio para
muchos, y, para los que lo conocieran, confío en que
no hará falta ningún comentario en esta revista para
recordarles la gran persona que era. Puede que no
sepa demasiadas cosas sobre la vida personal de Julio, pero
yo lo veía como una persona entregada a todo lo que hacía,
a su familia, a la música, a la enseñanza… Y lo que sí sé con
seguridad es lo importante que fue para mí, cómo me llevó
a desarrollar una pasión por la batería inmensurable, y más
aún, a desenvolverme con decisión. Estoy seguro de que no
habría sido lo mismo si él no me hubiera enseñado, porque
no solo aprendíamos lecciones con él, nos comprometíamos
a dar espectáculos ante los que Julio siempre se mostraba
entusiasta, contribuyendo y guiándonos desde su experiencia.
Con la banda del colegio comencé a experimentar
sensaciones que llevo ampliando desde entonces en
diferentes bandas, mejorando tanto en mis habilidades como
en gusto musical. En ese tipo de proyectos haces amistades
que no se olvidan fácilmente. Actualmente sigo tocando en
directo con mi grupo, y no puedo hacer más que agradecer
a Julio este regalo, haberme otorgado esta posibilidad, y
recordarle y honrarle cada vez que me suba a un escenario y
haga música.
It is surely already clear, for anyone who didn´t know him, how
important Julio was for many people, and for those who did
know him, I am confident that they won´t need any comment
in a magazine to be able to recall what a great person he
was. I may not know much about Julio´s personal life, but I
saw him as a person wholeheartedly dedicated to everything
he did; family, music, teaching… And what I do know for sure is
how important he was for me, how he led me to develop such
an immeasurable passion for music, and furthermore, to move
onward with determination. I´m sure it wouldn´t have been the
same if he hadn´t been the one to teach me, because we not
only learnt lessons, we committed to doing shows where Julio
always proved to be enthusiastic, contributing and guiding us by
experience.
With the school band, I began to experiment feelings I´ve
been expanding ever since with different bands, improving my
technical skills as well as my musical taste. In these kinds of
projects you make friendships not really easy to forget. Currently
I´m still playing live with my band, and I cannot think of
anything else other than thanking Julio for this gift, for giving me
that chance; remembering and honouring him every time I get
on stage and make music.

Este curso estamos impulsando nuestras Houses para que
disfruten de un papel más importante en El Centro Inglés.
Son una gran oportunidad para que nuestros alumnos
compitan sanamente dentro y fuera del aula, amplíen
relaciones entre alumnos de distintas edades, desarrollen
cualidades de liderazgo, trabajen con los valores del Colegio,
refuercen el entorno internacional y puedan disfrutar del
sentimiento de pertenencia.
Nuestras Houses se basan en países y santos de las Islas Británicas:

St. Patrick – (Verde- Irlanda)
St. Andrew – (Azul- Escocia)
St. David – (Amarillo-Gales)
Este año hemos celebrado el Día de las Houses, durante el cual
los alumnos recibieron los colores de sus respectivas Houses, se
presentaron a los capitanes ºde cada casa, compitieron entre ellas y
se llevó a cabo un proyecto piloto en Secundaria organizado por el
área de Educación Física.
This year we are developing our houses so that they have an
even more prominent role at The English Centre. They are a
chance for pupils to experience healthy competition in and
out of the classroom, develop relationships between pupils of
different ages, develop leadership qualities, work on the school
values, reinforce the international atmosphere and create a sense of
belonging.
Our houses are based on the countries and saints of the British Isles.

El Departamento de
Orientación de Secundaria
y Bachillerato del Colegio
comienza el año con un
innovador programa de charlas
y eventos destinado a conocer
las posibilidades que ofrece
el ámbito universitario, al que
accederán una vez finalicen
sus estudios en el Centro los
alumnos de 2º de Bachillerato.
Hace unos días fue el turno
de la Universidad de Navarra.
Antonio María Fernández
se reunió con un grupo de
alumnos de 2º de Bachillerato
B para ofrecerles una charla
informativa sobre “REGINA v. DUDLEY AND STEPHENS. El caso
Mignonette”, caso de Derecho Penal con recorrido histórico. En
su exposición surgieron preguntas como: ¿puede el Estado de
Necesidad justificar un homicidio? ¿Podemos matar a una persona
para salvar la vida de otras? Durante el desarrollo de la sesión se
descubrieron diferentes escenarios y se pidió a los alumnos que
tomaran partido. Al fin, se resolvió el caso con el comentario de las
corrientes filosóficas que justifican las posturas que los alumnos
previamente defendieron.
Somos conscientes de que la vida académica de nuestros alumnos
no finaliza con el Bachillerato sino que se prolonga en la Educación
Superior. Ante la importancia de este paso, el Departamento de
Orientación del Centro proporciona información exhaustiva de la
oferta universitaria y de los estudios profesionales.
A tal efecto se organizarán diferentes eventos de Orientación
Universitaria en los que encontrarán una amplísima información
sobre Universidades públicas y privadas de toda España.

Guidance Department begins the school
year with an innovative conference and
event programme, the aim of which is
to share the possibilities Universities
offer, Universities they will access once
Baccalaureate II pupils have finished
their studies at The English Centre.
A few days ago was the turn of The
University of Navarra. Antonio Maria
Fernandez met with a Baccalaureate 2B
group of pupils to give an informative
lecture on “REGINA v. DUDLEY AND
STEPHENS. “The Mignonette Case”, a
leading Criminal Law case. During his lecture different questions
were raised such as “Can the state of Absolute Necessity justify
manslaughter? Can we murder a person to save others?” As
the session went on, different scenarios were unveiled and
pupils were required to take sides. The case was finally solved
commenting current philosophical thought that substantiate the
cases the pupils had previously defended.
We are conscious of the fact that our pupils’ academic life does
not stop at Baccalaureate, but that it leads to Higher Education.
The English Centre Guidance Department understands the
importance of this step and therefore offers thorough information
regarding Universities and professional studies.
Different Career Guidance events will be organised along the
same lines, where pupils will be able to find a very wide range
of information regarding Spanish Universities, both public and
private.
