The traditional clothing and gold jewelry worn in Aasia Hamid’s nativecountry, Pakistan, are rich in bothcolor and texture. Inspired by thosegorgeous visuals, she combinedsparkling faceted drops with hex-cutcylinder beads in metallic and pearlfinishes. Her necklace is a piece that’sperfect for any special occasion.

step bystepGarnet necklacePeyote band[1 ] Thread a needle on a1-yd. (.9m) length of Fireline,and string a stop bead(Basics, p. 128) about 6 in.(15cm) from the end.[2 ] Pick up one color A andtwo color B 8 0 hex-cut beads.Go back through the A in theopposite direction (figure 1,

a–b) . Pick up an A, and gothrough the last B added (b–c) .[3 ] Continue stitching in flat,even-count peyote (Basics)until your band is approxi-mately 15 in. (38cm). Use aneven number of Bs, and endwith a B.[4 ] Remove the stop bead,secure the tails in the peyoteband with a few half-hitchknots (Basics) between beads,and trim.

Embellishment[1 ] Find the center pointof the peyote band. Count63 Bs in one direction, andslide a needle or otherplaceholder through that63rd bead. This is whereyou’ll begin the crystal picotsin step 5.[2 ] Secure a 1-yd. length of

Nymo near the end with themarked B, and exit the end B.[3 ] Pick up three 15 0 seedbeads. Sew through the nextB and the A above it to theright (figure 2, a–b) .[4 ] Pick up three 15 0 s, andsew through the next A andB (b–c) .[5 ] Repeat steps 3 and 4 until

you reach the marked B.Remove the needle orplaceholder.[6 ] Pick up a B, a biconecrystal, and a 15 0 . Go backthrough the crystal, pick up aB, and sew through the next

B and A (figure 3, a–b) .[7 ] Stitch three three-beadgroups as shown (b–c) .[8 ] Repeat steps 6 and 7 tentimes to make a total of 11crystal picots that alternatewith three three-bead groups(photo a) .[9 ] Pick up a B, a crystal,two 15 0 s, a small briolette,and two 15 0 s. Clasp[1 ] Secure an 18-in. (46cm)length of Nymo at one end,and exit an end bead.[2 ] Pick up three 15 0 s, a B,four 15 0 s, the button, andfour 15 0 s. Go back throughthe B (photo b) . Pick up three15 0 s, and sew into the otheredge bead (photo c) . Retracethe thread path a few times

for security. End the thread,and trim.[3 ] Secure a 1-yd. length ofNymo at the other end, andexit an end bead.[4 ] Pick up three 15 0 s, a B,and two 15 0 s. Go backthrough the B (figure 5, a–b) .Pick up three 15 0 s, and sewthrough the two end beads(b–c) . Sew back through thethree 15 0 s, the B, and the first15 0 above the B (c–d) .[5 ] Pick up two 15 0 s, and go

down through the 15 0 below.Go up through the adjacent15 0 and the first 15 0 addedin this step (d–e) .[6 ] Repeat step 5 until thestrip is long enough to goaround the button.

[7 ] Sew through the B atthe base of the strip, and gothrough the three 15 0 s asshown (figure 6, a–b) . Gothrough both end beads, upthrough the three 15 0 s, andback up through the B (b–c) .Go up through the unattached15 0 on the end of the loopand back down through theadjacent 15 0 (c–d) . Retracethe thread path a few times.

End the thread, and trim.

Green or bronzenecklace[1 ] Make a peyote band asin the garnet necklace.[2 ] Follow steps 1–8 of“Embellishment,” but beginthe picots at the 62nd bead

from the center.[3 ] Follow step 9 of “Embel-lishment,” but pick up a B, acrystal, three or four 15 0 s, ateardrop bead or briolette,and three or four 15 0 s foreach dangle. Repeat for atotal of 18 dangles.[4 ] Embellish the other endof the band as you did thefirst. End the thread, and trim.[5 ] Follow steps 1 and 2

of the clasp instructions forthe garnet necklace to attachthe button.[6 ] For the loop, begin bypicking up four 15 0 s, an A,and enough 15 0 s to go aroundthe button. Go back throughthe A, pick up four 15 0 s, andgo through the two end hex-cut beads (figure 7, a–b) .[7 ] Go back through thefour 15 0 s, the A, and the first15 0 of the loop. Pick up a15 0 , skip a 15 0 , and gothrough the next 15 0 (b–c) .Repeat around the loop tostitch a row of flat peyote(c–d) , then go through the A,the four 15 0 s, and the twoend hex-cut beads (d–e) .[8 ] Sew through the beads asshown (e–f) , then stitch onemore row of flat peyote (f–g) .End the thread, and trim. w
