¶ The Preparation Processional Hymn

1. O praise ye the Lord! Praise him in the height; rejoice in his word, ye angels of light;

ye heavens adore him by whom ye were made, and worship before him, in brightness arrayed.

2. O praise ye the Lord! Praise him upon earth,

in tuneful accord, ye sons of new birth; praise him who hath brought you his grace from above,

praise him who hath taught you to sing of his love.

3. O praise ye the Lord, all things that give sound; each jubilant chord re-echo around;

loud organs, his glory forth tell in deep tone, and, sweet harp, the story of what he hath done.

4. O praise ye the Lord! Thanksgiving and song to him be outpoured all ages along: for love in creation, for heaven restored,

for grace of salvation, O praise ye the Lord! Amen, amen.

Words: H W Baker (1821-1877) Music: Laudate Dominum, C H H Parry (1848-1918) (Ancient & Modern – 753)

Greeting

Welcome in the name of Christ. God’s grace, mercy and peace be with you.

All And also with you.

The Lord be with you All and also with you

Collect

Lord Jesus Christ,

we thank you that in this wonderful sacrament you have given us the memorial of your passion:

grant us so to reverence the sacred mysteries of your body and blood

that we may know within ourselves and show forth in our lives the fruits of your redemption;

for you are alive and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. All Amen.

¶ The Liturgy of the Word

Please sit

First Reading – 1 Corinthians 11.23-26

Beloved: I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the

Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way he took the

cup also, after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ For as often as

you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

At the end of the reading

This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

5

Gradual Hymn

1. I come with joy, a child of God, forgiven, loved, and free,

the life of Jesus to recall, in love laid down for me.

2. I come with Christians far and near

to find, as all are fed, the new community of love

in Christ's communion bread.

3. As Christ breaks bread and bids us share, each proud division ends.

The love that made us, makes us one, and strangers now are friends.

4. The Spirit of the risen Christ,

unseen, but ever near, is in such friendship better known:

alive among us here.

5. Together met, together bound, by all that God has done,

we'll go with joy, to give the world, the love that makes us one.

Words: Brian Wren (b 1936)

Music: St Botolph, Gordon Slater (1896-1979) © 1971, 1995, 2011 Stainer & Bell Ltd

(Ancient & Modern – 448)

Gospel Reading – John 6.51-58

When the Gospel is announced the reader says

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John

All Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus said to the Jews: ‘I am the living bread that came down from

heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.’ The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’ So

Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat

my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Those

who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever

eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the

one who eats this bread will live for ever.’

At the end

This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ.

¶ Admission to First Communion

The candidates stand before the priest with their parents, godparents or

sponsors

In Baptism we are made members of Christ’s family. As members of that family we gather together to share in the meal which he gave us as a sign

of his living presence among us. We do this in obedience to Jesus’ command which he gave at his last supper with his friends on the night

before he died.

Today is an important stage in your Christian journey which began at your baptism. We welcome you as you receive Communion for the first

time.

The priest addresses the children by name

Have you been baptised in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

I have Do you wish to be admitted to Holy Communion and share regularly in

this sacrament I do

The priest addresses the parents and sponsors Will you help these children grow in faith and come to confirmation.

The priest addresses the congregation Will you welcome these children as communicant members of Christ’s family and support them with your friendship and prayers.

All We will

The priest says to each child With the permission of the Bishop of Peterborough, I welcome you to

¶ The Liturgy of Initiation

Presentation of the Candidates

The bishop asks the candidate for baptism

Do you wish to be baptized? Candidate I do.

The bishop asks the candidates

Have you been baptised in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit?

Candidates I have.

Are you ready with your own mouth and from your own heart to affirm your faith in Jesus Christ?

Candidates I am.

The bishop addresses the whole congregation

People of God, will you welcome these candidates and uphold them in their life in Christ?

All With the help of God, we will.

Decision

The bishop addresses all the candidates

In baptism, God calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light. To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him. Therefore I ask:

Do you reject the devil and all rebellion against God?

Candidates I reject them.

Do you renounce the deceit and corruption of evil? Candidates I renounce them.

Do you repent of the sins that separate us from God and neighbour? Candidates I repent of them.

Do you turn to Christ as Saviour?

Candidates I turn to Christ.

Do you submit to Christ as Lord? Candidates I submit to Christ.

Do you come to Christ, the way, the truth and the life?

Candidates I come to Christ. May God who has given you the desire to follow Christ give you strength

to continue in the Way. Amen.

8

Signing with the Cross

The bishop, clergy and candidates for confirmation gather at the baptismal font. The congregation turns to face the font.

The bishop makes the sign of the cross on the forehead of the baptism candidate,

saying

Christ claims you for his own.

Receive the sign of his cross.

When the candidate for baptism has been signed, the bishop says to them

Do not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified.

All Fight valiantly as a disciple of Christ

against sin, the world and the devil,

and remain faithful to Christ to the end of your life.

The bishop says

May almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness,

restore in you the image of his glory,

and lead you in the light and obedience of Christ.

All Amen.

Prayer over the Water

Praise God who made heaven and earth,

All who keeps his promise for ever.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

All It is right to give thanks and praise.

We thank you, almighty God, for the gift of water

to sustain, refresh and cleanse all life.

Over water the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation.

Through water you led the children of Israel

from slavery in Egypt to freedom in the Promised Land.

In water your Son Jesus received the baptism of John

and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ,

to lead us from the death of sin to newness of life.

We thank you, Father, for the water of baptism.

In it we are buried with Christ in his death.

By it we share in his resurrection.

Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit.

Therefore, in joyful obedience to your Son,

we baptize into his fellowship those who come to him in faith.

9

Now sanctify this water that, by the power of your Holy Spirit,

they may be cleansed from sin and born again.

Renewed in your image, may they walk by the light of faith

and continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Lord;

to whom with you and the Holy Spirit

be all honour and glory, now and for ever.

All Amen.

Profession of Faith

The bishop addresses the congregation

Let us affirm, together with these who are being baptized and confirmed

our common faith in Jesus Christ.

Do you believe and trust in God the Father,

source of all being and life,

the one for whom we exist?

All I believe and trust in him.

Do you believe and trust in God the Son,

who took our human nature,

died for us and rose again?

All I believe and trust in him.

Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit,

who gives life to the people of God

and makes Christ known in the world?

All I believe and trust in him.

This is the faith of the Church.

All This is our faith.

We believe and trust in one God,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Baptism

The Bishop says to the candidate for baptism N, is this your faith?

The candidate answers This is my faith.

The School Chaplain pours water on the candidate, saying

N, I baptize you in the name of the Father,

and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

All Amen.

10

The Bishop says

May God, who has received you by baptism into his Church,

pour upon you the riches of his grace, that within the company of Christ’s pilgrim people

you may daily be renewed by his anointing Spirit, and come to the inheritance of the saints in glory.

All Amen.

The bishop sprinkles the confirmation candidates with water, as a reminder of baptism.

Almighty God, we thank you for our fellowship in the household of faith

with all who have been baptized into your name. Keep us faithful to our baptism, and so make us ready for that day

when the whole creation shall be made perfect in your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

The bishop and the candidates gather at the place of confirmation.

The congregation is asked to kneel or sit.

Confirmation

Our help is in the name of the Lord All who has made heaven and earth.

Blessed be the name of the Lord All now and for ever. Amen.

The bishop extends his hands towards those to be confirmed

Almighty and ever-living God,

you have given these your servants new birth in baptism by water and the Spirit, and have forgiven them all their sins.

Let your Holy Spirit rest upon them: the Spirit of wisdom and understanding;

the Spirit of counsel and inward strength; the Spirit of knowledge and true godliness;

and let their delight be in the fear of the Lord. Amen.

The Bishop addresses each candidate by name

N, God has called you by name and made you his own.

The Bishop anoints each of those on whom he has laid hands with the Oil of Chrism, as a sign of God's anointing Spirit.

11

He then lays his hand on the head of each, saying

Confirm, O Lord, your servant with your Holy Spirit.

Amen.

The Bishop invites the congregation to pray for those confirmed

All Defend, O Lord, these your servants

with your heavenly grace, that they may continue yours for ever,

and daily increase in your Holy Spirit more and more until they come to your everlasting kingdom. Amen

The Commission

The bishop addresses those who have just been confirmed.

Those who are baptized are called to worship and serve God.

Will you continue in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?

Candidates With the help of God, I will.

Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin,

repent and return to the Lord? Candidates With the help of God, I will.

Will you proclaim by word and example

the good news of God in Christ? Candidates With the help of God, I will.

Will you seek and serve Christ in all people,

loving your neighbour as yourself? Candidates With the help of God, I will.

Will you acknowledge Christ's authority over human society,

by prayer for the world and its leaders, by defending the weak, and by seeking peace and justice?

Candidates With the help of God, I will.

May Christ dwell in your hearts through faith, that you may be rooted and grounded in love

and bring forth the fruit of the Spirit. Amen.

The Peace

Bishop To crown all things there must be love, to bind all together and complete the whole.

Let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. All And also with you.

Offertory Hymn

During this hymn the offerings will be received.

1. Christians, lift your hearts and voices,

let your praises be outpoured; come with joy and exultation

to the table of the Lord; come believing, come expectant,

in obedience to his word.

2. See, presiding at his table, Jesus Christ our great high priest;

where he summons all his people, none is greatest. none is least;

graciously he bids them welcome to the eucharistic feast.

3. Lord, we offer in thanksgiving

life and work for you to bless; yet unworthy is the offering,

marred by pride and carelessness; so, Lord, pardon our transgressions,

plant in us true holiness.

4. On the evening of his passion Jesus gave the wine and bread,

so that all who love and serve him shall for evermore be fed.

Taste and see the Lord is gracious feed upon the living bread.

¶ The Liturgy of the Eucharist

Stand

The Eucharistic Prayer

Bishop The Lord be with you. All and also with you.

Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give thanks and praise.

13

Lord of all life, you created the universe,

where all living things reflect your glory.

You give us this great and beautiful earth,

to discover and to cherish.

You made us all,

each wonderfully different,

to join with the angels and sing your praise:

All (sung) Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

We thank you, loving Father,

because, when we turned away, you sent Jesus, your Son. He gave his life for us on the cross

and shows us the way to live.

Send your Holy Spirit

that these gifts of bread and wine may be for us Christ's body and his blood.

On the night before he died,

when darkness had fallen, Jesus took bread.

He gave thanks, broke it, and shared it with his disciples, saying: 'This is my body, given for you.

Do this to remember me.'

After they had eaten, he took the cup of wine,

gave thanks, and shared it with his disciples, saying: 'This is my blood, poured out for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins.'

So Father, with this bread and this cup we celebrate his love, his death, his risen life.

As you feed us with these gifts, send your Holy Spirit, and change us more and more

to be like Jesus our Saviour.

14

Help us, Father, to love one another,

as we look forward to that day when suffering is ended,

and all creation is gathered in your loving arms.

And now with all your saints we give you glory,

through Jesus Christ, in the strength of the Spirit,

today and for ever. All (sung) Amen.

Sit or kneel

Lord’s Prayer

Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us:

All Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory,

for ever and ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All Though we are many, we are one body,

because we all share in one bread.

Agnus Dei

All (sung) Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us.

Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us peace.

15

Giving of Bread and Wine

God’s holy gifts, for God’s holy people. All Jesus Christ is holy. Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The congregation comes to receive Communion, the newly-confirmed and those newly admitted receiving first. We welcome all who would normally receive

Communion in their own churches to do so here. If you would prefer to receive a blessing rather than the bread and wine, it is helpful if you indicate your

intentions by bringing this booklet with you.

While Communion is being distributed, the anthem and hymns are sung:

Anthem

Panis angelicus

fit panis hominum; Dat panis coelicus

figuris terminum: O res mirabilis!

Manducat Dominum Pauper, servus et humilis.

The angelic bread

becomes the bread of men; The heavenly bread

ends all prefigurations: What wonder!

The Lord is eaten by a poor and humble servant.

Words: From Sacris solemniis, St Thomas Aquinas, for the Feast of Corpus Christi Music: Cesar Franck (1822-1890)

Communion Hymns

1. Such love, pure as the whitest snow;

such love weeps for the shame I know; such love, paying the debt I owe;

O Jesus, such love.

2. Such love, stilling my restlessness; such love, filling my emptiness;

such love, showing me holiness; O Jesus, such love.

3. Such love springs from eternity; such love, streaming through history; such love, fountain of life to me;

O Jesus, such love.

Words & Music: Graham Kendrick (b 1950) © 1988 Graham Kendrick / Make Way Music (Ancient & Modern – 785)

16

1. Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee;

take my moments and my days, let them flow in ceaseless praise.

2. Take my hands, and let them move at the impulse of thy love; take my feet, and let them be swift and beautiful for thee.

3. Take my voice, and let me sing always, only, for my King;

take my lips, and let them be filled with messages from thee.

4. Take my silver and my gold, not a mite would I withhold;

take my intellect, and use every power as thou shalt choose.

5. Take my will and make it thine: it shall be no longer mine; take my heart, it is thine own; it shall be thy royal throne.

6. Take my love; my Lord, I pour at thy feet its treasure-store;

take myself, and I will be ever, only, all for thee.

Words: Frances Ridley Havergal (1836-1879) Music: Nottingham, Wenzel Müller (1747-1835)

(Ancient & Modern - 787)

Post Communion Prayer

Eternal Father,

we thank you for nourishing us with these heavenly gifts:

may our communion strengthen us in faith, build us up in hope,

and make us grow in love; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

All God of mercy,

by whose grace alone we are accepted and equipped for your service:

stir up in us the gifts of your Holy Spirit and make us worthy of our calling;

that we may bring forth the fruit of the Spirit in love and joy and peace;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

17

¶ Sending Out

Blessing

God the Father,

who has given to his Son the name above every name, strengthen you to proclaim Christ Jesus as Lord.

All Amen.

God the Son, who is our great high priest passed into the heavens,

plead for you at the right hand of the Father. All Amen.

God the Holy Spirit,

who pours out his abundant gifts upon the Church, make you faithful servants of Christ our King.

All Amen.

And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be upon you and remain with you always. All Amen.

Giving of Light

The newly confirmed and those newly admitted to Communion are given a lighted candle.

God has delivered us from the dominion of darkness and has given us a place with the saints in light.

You have received the light of Christ;

walk in this light all the days of your life. All Shine as a light in the world

to the glory of God the Father.

The Dismissal

Go in the light and peace of Christ.

All Thanks be to God.

18

Final Hymn

During which bishop leads the newly confirmed through the church.

1. Christ is the one who calls, the one who loved and came,

to whom by right it falls to bear the highest name:

and still today our hearts are stirred

to hear his word and walk his way.

2. Christ is the one who seeks,

to whom our souls are known. The word of love he speaks

can wake a heart of stone; for at that sound

the blind can see, the slave is free,

the lost are found.

3. Christ is the one who died, forsaken and betrayed;

who, mocked and crucified, the price of pardon paid.

Our dying Lord, what grief and loss,

what bitter cross, our souls restored!

4. Christ is the one who rose

in glory from the grave, to share his life with those

whom once he died to save. He drew death's sting

and broke its chains, who lives and reigns,

our risen King.

5. Christ is the one who sends, his story to declare;

who calls his servants friends and gives them news to share.

His truth proclaim in all the earth,

his matchless worth and saving Name.

Langham Art Show

Cancellation

It is with regret that the organisers

have announced that the 'Art for Hearts Sake' art show 4-6 July in

Langham Church has had to be cancelled due to insufficient entries.

Fairtrade

Sales for May amounted to a healthy £172.06. Many thanks to everyone

who took the time to look and buy. The next dates for the stall are after

the 10.30 service on 6th and 20th July. Thanks Denise (722729)
