8:00am Holy Communion**
10:30am Family Service*
The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.
Opening Hymn*
1. Praise the One who breaks the darkness
with a liberating light. Praise the One who frees the prisoners
turning blindness into sight. Praise the One who preached the gospel,
curing every dread disease, calming storms and feeding thousands with the very bread of peace.
2. Praise the One who blessed the children
with a strong yet gentle word. Praise the One who drove out demons
with a piercing, two-edged sword. Praise the One who brings cool water
to the desert's burning sand; from this well comes living water, quenching thirst in every land.
3. Praise the one true love incarnate: Christ who suffered in our place.
Jesus died and rose for many that we may know God by grace. Let us sing for joy and gladness,
seeing what our God has done. Praise the one redeeming glory.
Praise the One who makes us one.
Words: Rusty Edwards (b 1955) Music: Austria, Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) – A&M 761 © 1987 Hope Publishing Company (Ancient & Modern – 762)
Collect
O God, the protector of all who trust in you, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy: increase and multiply upon us your mercy;
that with you as our ruler and guide we may so pass through things temporal
that we lose not our hold on things eternal; grant this, heavenly Father, for our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake,
who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Isaiah 65.1-9*
The word of the Lord through the prophet: I was ready to be sought out by those who did not ask, to be found by those who did not seek me. I said, ‘Here I am, here I
am’, to a nation that did not call on my name. I held out my hands all day long to a rebellious people, who walk in a way that is not good, following their own devices; a
people who provoke me to my face continually, sacrificing in gardens and offering incense on bricks; who sit inside tombs, and spend the night in secret places; who eat
swine’s flesh, with broth of abominable things in their vessels; who say, ‘Keep to yourself, do not come near me, for I am too holy for you.’ These are a smoke in my
nostrils, a fire that burns all day long. See, it is written before me: I will not keep silent, but I will repay; I will indeed repay into their laps their iniquities and their
ancestors’ iniquities together, says the LORD; because they offered incense on the mountains and reviled me on the hills, I will measure into their laps full payment for
their actions. Thus says the LORD: As the wine is found in the cluster, and they say, ‘Do not destroy it, for there is a blessing in it’, so I will do for my servants’ sake, and not destroy them all. I will bring forth descendants from Jacob, and from Judah
inheritors of my mountains; my chosen shall inherit it, and my servants shall settle there.
Second Reading – Galatians 3.23-29
Before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law until faith would
be revealed. Therefore the law was our disciplinarian until Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer subject to a
disciplinarian, for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ; There is no
longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you
are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to the promise.
Gospel – Luke 8.26-39
Jesus and his disciples arrived at the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. As he stepped out on land, a man of the city who had demons met him. For
a long time he had worn no clothes, and he did not live in a house but in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he fell down before him and shouted at the top of his voice,
‘What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me’ – for Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man.
(For many times it had seized him; he was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the
wilds.) Jesus then asked him, ‘What is your name?’ He said, ‘Legion’; for many demons had entered him. They begged him not to order them to go back into the
5
abyss. Now there on the hillside a large herd of swine was feeding; and the demons
begged Jesus to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep
bank into the lake and was drowned. When the swineherds saw what had happened, they ran off and told it in the city and in the country. Then people came out to see
what had happened, and when they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And
they were afraid. Those who had seen it told them how the one who had been possessed by demons had been healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them; for they were seized with great
fear. So he got into the boat and returned. The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but Jesus sent him away, saying, ‘Return to
your home, and declare how much God has done for you.’ So he went away, proclaiming throughout the city how much Jesus had done for him.
Hymn*
1. Be still, for the presence of the Lord,
the Holy One, is here; come bow before him now
with reverence and fear: in him no sin is found –
we stand on holy ground. Be still, for the presence of the Lord,
the Holy One is here.
2. Be still, for the glory of the Lord
is shining all around; he burns with holy fire,
with splendour he is crowned: how awesome is the sight –
our radiant King of light! Be still, for the glory of the Lord
is shining all around.
3. Be still, for the power of the Lord is moving in this place:
he comes to cleanse and heal, to minister his grace.
No work too hard for him, in faith receive from him.
Be still, for the power of the Lord is moving in this place.

Hymn*
1. Before the throne of God above
I have a strong, a perfect plea, a great High Priest whose name is Love,
who ever lives and pleads for me. My name is graven on his hands,
my name is written on his heart; I know that while in heav’n he stands
no tongue can bid me thence depart, no tongue can bid me thence depart.
2. When Satan tempts me to despair,
and tells me of the guilt within, upward I look and see him there,
who made an end to all my sin. Because the sinless Saviour died,
my sinful soul is counted free; for God, the Just, is satisfied
to look on him and pardon me, to look on him and pardon me.
3. Behold him there! the risen Lamb,
my perfect, spotless Righteousness; the great unchangeable I AM,
the King of glory and of grace! One with himself I cannot die,
my soul is purchased with his blood; my life is hid with Christ on high, with Christ, my Saviour and my God,
with Christ, my Saviour and my God.
Words: Charitie Lees De Chenez (1841-1923) Music: Before the Throne of God, Vikki Cook

Final Hymn*
1. To God be the glory, great things he hath done! So loved he the world that he gave us his Son,
who yielded his life an atonement for sin and opened the life-gate that all may go in.
Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Let the earth hear his voice;
Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Let the people rejoice! O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,
and give him the glory! Great things he hath done!
2. O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood!
To every believer the promise of God! The vilest offender who truly believes, that moment from Jesus forgiveness receives.
3. Great things he has taught us, great things he has done, and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
but purer and higher and greater will be our wonder, our rapture, when Jesus we see.
Words: Fanny Crosby (Frances Jane van Alstyne) (1820-1915) Music: To God be the Glory, George Washington Doane (1799-1859)
(Ancient & Modern – 818)
Post Communion Prayer**
Eternal God, comfort of the afflicted and healer of the broken,
you have fed us at the table of life and hope: teach us the ways of gentleness and peace,
that all the world may acknowledge the kingdom of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Psalm 50 deus deorum
J Turle
1 The Lord, even the most mighty | God hath | spoken: and called the world from the rising up of the sun,
unto the | go-ing | down there- | of. 2 Out of | Sion ∙ hath | God ap- | pear’d in | per-fect | beauty.
3 Our God shall come and | shall not ∙ keep | silence : there shall go before him a consuming fire,
and a mighty tempest shall be | stirr’d up | round a- | bout him. 4 He shall call the | heaven ∙ from a- | bove : and the | earth that ∙ he may | judge his | people.
5 Gather my saints to- | ge-ther | unto me : those that have made a | covenant ∙ with | me with | sacrifice.
6 And the heavens shall de- | clare his | righteousness : For | God is | Judge him- | self.
7 Hear O my people and | I will | speak :
I myself will testify against thee O Isra-el , for | I am ∙ God, | ev-en | thy God.
8 I will not reprove thee be- | cause of ∙ thy | sacrifices : or for thy burnt-offerings be- | cause they ∙ were not | alway ∙ be- | fore me.
9 I will take no bullock | out of ∙ thine | house :
nor | he-goat | out of ∙ thy | folds. 10 For all the beasts of the | forest ∙ are | mine :
and so are the | cattle up-on a | thou-sand | hills.
9
11 I know all the | fowls up-on the | mountains :
and the wild beasts of the | field are | in my | sight. 12 If I be hungry, I will | not tell | thee :
for the whole world is mine and | all that | is there- | in.
13 Thinkest thou that I will | eat bulls’ | flesh : and | drink the | blood of | goats?
14 Offer unto | God — | thanksgiving : and pay thy | vows unto ∙ the | most — | Highest.
†15 And call upon me in the | time of | trouble :
so will I | hear thee ∙ and | thou shalt | praise me.
J Turle
16 But unto the un- | godly ∙ said | God :
why dost thou preach my laws and takest my | coven-ant | in thy | mouth; 17 Whereas thou | hatest to ∙ be re- | form’d :
and hast | cast my | words be- | hind thee?
18 When thou sawest a thief thou con- | sentedst | unto him : and hast been par- | tak-er | with the ∙ ad- | ulterers.
19 Thou hast let thy | mouth speak | wickedness : and with thy | tongue ∙ thou hast | set forth ∙ de- | ceit.
†20 Thou satest and spakest a- | gainst thy | brother :
yea and hast | slandered ∙ thine own | moth-er’s | son.
21a These things hast thou done and I | held my | tongue, and thou thoughtest, wickedly, * that I am | even ∙ such a | one as ∙ thy- | self :
21b But | I will ∙ re- | prove thee, and set before thee the | things that | thou hast | done.
22 O consider this | ye that for-get | God :
lest I pluck you away and | there be | none ∙ to de- | liver you. 23 Whoso offereth me thanks and | praise, he | honoureth me :
and to him that ordereth his conversation right, will I | shew ∙ the sal- | vation ∙ of | God.
Glory | be ∙ to the | Father, and to the | Son and ∙ to the | Ho-ly | Ghost; As it was in the beginning is | now and ∙ ever | shall be : world | with-out | end, A- | men.

Bereavement Support
Group
For the last 3 years we have been
running a Bereavement Support group in the Parish Hall. It has been for
people of all faiths or none, for those recently bereaved or those who are still aching after many years.
However, particularly since Hildred left, it has become clear that we are
not meeting people’s needs, so the meetings on the first Thursday of the
month in the Parish Hall will now stop. We are planning to re-launch
the service in the autumn, in a different format. To help provide
something useful, we have drawn up a short questionnaire to ask those who
are bereaved what would help. If you have lost a loved one – recently
or further back, please fill in one of the Questionnaires which will be at
the back of Oakham Church, or from the website. Sian Cheverton.
Mothers’ Union Wine
Tasting
Thanks must go to Ben and Emma of Bat & Bottle who provided the wine
and entertainment, those who attended on the evening and also
those who generously gave donations. A total of £460 will go to the Lunch
Project started by the MU in Kettering for those children who
need a good, nutritious meal during holiday times. Pamela Woods.

Tea Party
Thank you to all who supported the
Tea Party last Sunday by helping, serving, baking and joining us for tea,
sandwiches and cakes – it was a lovely afternoon. Date for your diary: the
next Tea Party is on Sunday the 17th July 2016 at 3:00 – 4:30 pm where we
will have the Church silver on display. We look forward to seeing you then.
Clock Restoration
Appeal
A fundraising appeal to preserve the historic clock in Oakham church tower has
been launched with a front page article in the Rutland Mercury. The clock is an
important timepiece, installed in 1858 by Dent & Co, widely regarded as the finest
clockmaker in 19th century Britain, and is
now in need of restoration and upgrading. For more details about the clock and the
appeal please see the website.
What’s New on the
