8:00am Holy Communion
10:30am Parish Communion*
The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.
Opening Hymn*
1. Rise and hear! The Lord is speaking,
as the gospel words unfold;
we, in all our agelong seeking,
find no firmer truth to hold.
2. Word of goodness, truth, and beauty,
heard by simple folk and wise,
word of freedom, word of duty,
word of life beyond our eyes.
3. Word of God’s forgiveness granted
to the wild or guilty soul,
word of love that works undaunted,
changes, heals, and makes us whole.
4. Speak to us, O Lord, believing,
as we hear, the sower sows;
may our hearts, your word receiving,
be the good ground where it grows.
Words: Howard Charles Adie Gaunt (1902-1983)
Music: Sussex, English traditional melody adapted by Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)
(Ancient & Modern – 387)
Collect
O God, the protector of all who trust in you,
without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy:
increase and multiply upon us your mercy;
that with you as our ruler and guide
we may so pass through things temporal
that we lose not our hold on things eternal;
grant this, heavenly Father,
for our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
First Reading – Isaiah 55.10-13
Thus says the LORD: For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not
return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to
the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall
not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing
for which I sent it. For you shall go out in joy, and be led back in peace; the mountains and the
hills before you shall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. Instead
of the thorn shall come up the cypress; instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle; and it
shall be to the LORD for a memorial, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.
4
Second Reading – Romans 8.1-11
There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit
of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For God has done
what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: by sending his own Son in the likeness
of sinful flesh, and to deal with sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, so that the just
requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but
according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the
things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things
of the Spirit. To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life
and peace. For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not
submit to God’s law – indeed it cannot, 8and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you.
Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in
you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the
Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the
dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you.
Gradual Hymn*
1. Word that formed creation, earth and sea and sky;
Word that brings salvation, Word that will not die;
speak now in us that we might hear your call;
Living Word of Jesus, sound within us all.
2. Love that formed and named us, filled this clay with breath;
Love that seeks and claims us, Love beyond all death;
come now and fire the life that flows from you;
Love that raised up Jesus raise us up anew.
3. Song of joy and wonder, sound so wild and free;
voice of wind and thunder, boundless as the sea;
Music of God, the love that casts out fear;
Song that sang in Jesus, sing within us here.
4. God of all creation, form our hearts anew;
God of our salvation, lead us home to you;
Spirit, inspire our hearts to hear you call;
living God of Jesus, come renew us all!
Word: Marty Haugen (b 1950)
Music: Noel Nouvelet, French carol, 15th century, harmonised by David Iliff (b 1939)
(Ancient & Modern – 220)

Gospel – Matthew 13.1-9,18-23
Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the lake. Such great crowds gathered
around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on
the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: ‘Listen! A sower went
out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and
ate them up. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil,
and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil. But when the sun rose,
they were scorched; and since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds
fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on
good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Let
anyone with ears listen!
Hear then the parable of the sower. When anyone hears the word of the kingdom
and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in
the heart; this is what was sown on the path. As for what was sown on rocky
ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet
such a person has no root, but endures only for a while, and when trouble or
persecution arises on account of the word, that person immediately falls away. As for
what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of
the world and the lure of wealth choke the word, and it yields nothing. But as for
what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it,
who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in
another thirty.’
Offertory Hymn*
1. And can it be that I should gain
an interest in the Saviour’s blood?
Died he for me, who caused his pain?
For me, who him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be
that thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
2. ’Tis mystery all! the Immortal dies!
Who can explore his strange design?
In vain the first-born seraph tries
to sound the depths of love divine.
’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore,
let angel minds inquire no more.
3. He left his Father’s throne above –
so free, so infinite his grace –
emptied himself of all but love,
and bled for Adam’s helpless race.
’Tis mercy all, immense and free;
for, O my God, it found out me!
4. Long my imprisoned spirit lay
fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
thine eye diffused a quickening ray;
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
my chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed thee.
6
5. No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in him, is mine!
Alive in him, my living Head,
and clothed in righteousness divine,
bold I approach the eternal throne,
and claim the crown, through Christ my own.
The last two lines of each verse are repeated.
Words: Charles Wesley (1707-1788)
Music: Sagina, from The Bouquet, 1825, Thomas Campbell (1800-1876)
(Ancient & Modern – 588)
Communion Anthem*
Thou visitest the earth, and blessest it:
And crownest the year with thy goodness.
Words: Psalms 65.9,12 Music: Maurice Greene (1696-1755)
Communion Hymn*
1. Father of heaven, whose love profound
a ransom for our souls hath found,
before thy throne we sinners bend,
to us thy pardoning love extend.
2. Almighty Son, incarnate Word,
our Prophet, Priest, Redeemer, Lord,
before thy throne we sinners bend,
to us thy saving grace extend.
3. Eternal Spirit, by whose breath
the soul is raised from sin and death,
before thy throne we sinners bend,
to us thy quickening power extend.
4Thrice Holy! Father, Spirit, Son;
mysterious Godhead, Three in One,
before thy throne we sinners bend,
grace, pardon, life to us extend.
Words: Edward Cooper (1770-1833)
Music: Rievaulx, John Bacchus Dykes (1823-1876)
(Ancient & Modern – 628)
Post Communion Prayer
Eternal God,
comfort of the afflicted and healer of the broken,
you have fed us at the table of life and hope:
teach us the ways of gentleness and peace,
that all the world may acknowledge
the kingdom of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
7
Final Hymn*
You shall go out with joy and be led forth with peace;
and the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you.
There'll be shouts of joy and all the trees of the field
shall clap, shall clap their hands,
and the trees of the field shall clap their hands,
and the trees of the field shall clap their hands,
and the trees of the field shall clap their hands,
and you’ll go out with joy.
Words: based on Isaiah 55.12, Stuart Dauermann (b 1944)
Music: Stuart Dauermann (b 1944), arranged by Anthony Frederick Carver (b 1947) & Anne Harrison (b 1954)

wilt not thou O | God go | out with ∙ our | hosts?
11 O be thou our | help in | trouble :
for | vain ∙ is the | help of | man.
12 Through God will we | do great | acts :
for it is | he that ∙ shall | tread down ∙ our | enemies.

been as our Youth Intern this year.
We would like to thank her for
everything she has done this year with
the youth services, ASK, not to
mention helping promote our
Facebook and Twitter accounts!
There will be a Celebration
Service in the Cathedral on 17 July

Pewsheet Notices
The Weekly Pewsheet will be taking
on a new shape for a trial period in
the villages (as has already been
running at Oakham for some time).
We would like to encourage more
notices from every Church in the
Team, whether they need advertising
around the whole Team, or just the
local Church. Help us to make it
YOUR pewsheet, so that we are all
more aware of what is going on
throughout the Team. Please email
notices, by preference, to
11am on Wednesday. If you don’t
have email access, they can still be
delivered to the Team Office in
person or by phone to Janine during
weekday mornings by the same
deadline.
Any Old Deckchairs?
Does anyone have any old-fashioned
deck chairs – wooden frame, stripey
fabric? If so, could we borrow them
for our deck chair erecting
competition on 27 July during ‘Fun in
the Sun’ at Braunston. If you can help,
please contact Gail Rudge on 01572
755570.
