On its formation in 2011, most members of the Pewsey Belles were drawn from Pewsey itself but just as its reputation has grown, so its membership now travels from all over Wiltshire.

Now in their third year the choir continues to develop and build on its core strengths and has performed at numerous events across Wiltshire and further afield, always with high expectations.

Pewsey Belles sing under the direction of Jules Addison, a Music Graduate of Royal Holloway, University of London with 20 years’ music industry experience as Producer, Sound Engineer and Composer. He is also MD for tonight’s other performers The BlueBelles as well as the Southgate House Choir, Cirencester Male Voice Choir and the GWH Choir in Swindon.

As Musical Director of the Pewsey Belles he is always pleased to hear of prospective members for the choir, looking for ladies of all ages with a passion for singing and the ability to adapt to different styles of music. Sight reading skills and the ability to read music are always welcome but not essential.

The choir is currently made up of four parts (SSAA), non auditioned and whilst it is asked that members try to give as much notice as possible with regard to missing rehearsals, the ethos of the Pewsey Belles is all about having fun and singing together.

Welcome! Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the 6th Carnival Band and Choir Gala Concert. With a very full Carnival fortnight this event has always been held after all other festivities have finished and its a welcome evening out as the nights “draw in”. Roy Coles and the members of KV Brass are keen supporters of Carnival and we have enjoyed their music at the opening ceremony and in the main procession for many years. The Gala Concert is also now firmly established with a big reputation as a lively and hugely entertaining evening. They have again invited the Pewsey Male Voice Choir and the Pewsey Belles Ladies Choir to join the programme. What a treat! All money goes to Carnival funds, which is distributed to a number of good causes including the Wilts Air Ambulance, Prospect Hospice and Naomi House Hospice for Children. I hope you feel able to contribute generously but more than that I hope you enjoy the musical talents of your neighbours and have a very happy and enjoyable evening. Pewsey MVC sing for the fun of it with the aim of sharing that simple pleasure with their audience and tap in to a rich vein of local enthusiasm for the choral tradition, evidenced by the annual RNLI Spring Concerts in the Bouverie Hall as run by the Zixex Club from 1990-2009.

Eight voices attended PMVC’s inaugural rehearsal on Mon 13 Nov 2006 in the back room of the Coopers Arms under the direction of Felicity Dainton. Five of that first season’s cohort remain in the choir to this day but nowadays membership is drawn from around the Pewsey Vale and has included all from teenagers to octogenarians. Whilst numbers have steadied around the twenty mark the invitation is always open for new voices who share the simple love of singing … you won’t have to sing solos, you don’t have to be able to read music and you won’t be judged!

When Felicity left for Dubai (returning later to co-found the Pewsey Belles), she left the choir in the capable hands of her neighbour Nicky Clarke … who then also moved away (pattern forming?) albeit to the somewhat less exotic climes of Catterick Camp ... But, there, inspired by the PMVC experience and recognising what a boon a choir could be for those left at home when servicemen were away on tours of duty, she founded the Wives & Girlfriends (WAGs) Choir for the British 4th Armoured Brigade (the "Black Rats"). The rest is history: Nicky contacted Gareth Malone with the idea for the Military Wives Choir BBC TV series which so entranced the nation that it led to a Xmas No1 (Wherever You Are), a No1 album, singing with Gary Barlow at Buckingham Palace for the Jubilee, then a Classic Brit Award and an MBE in the 2014 Queen's Birthday Honours List as co-Director of the Military Wives Choir Foundation ... “great oaks from little acorns grow!“

Nicky’s parting gift was a new muse in the person of her friend Nel Matthews … who didn’t actually move away … but nevertheless found she had to relinquish conducting duties and it was at that point Daryl Taylor took on the task of directing the male voices of the vale.

Kennet Vale Brass kvbrass.co.uk

Kennet Vale Brass perform mainly as a 12 piece Brass Ensemble but can also provide from a Quintet through to a 15 Piece Concert Band. They regularly entertain at Concerts, Festivals, Garden Parties, Fetes, Church Services and Carnival, delivering an entertaining mix of Swing, Jazz, Latin, Easy Listening and Popular Music through the medium of Brass.

The Kennet Vale Silver Band was originally formed in 1934 by the amalgamation of Lockeridge Silver Prize Band and the Overton Mission Band. Their instruments were moth-balled for the duration of WWII but afterwards members resumed to enjoy many years of success and prominence.

Like many other bands they then suffered something of a recession as skiffle and rock’n’roll came into fashion when boys and girls no longer wanted to play brass but preferred to try their hands at strumming a guitar.

Around the end of the 1960s the band dropped “Silver” from its title and became Kennet Vale Band - and contest success continued as they progressed from a 4th Section Band in the early 1970s to a Championship Section Band in 1987.

Soon afterwards membership started to decline but a few stalwarts ensured their survival, not as a conventional 25 piece Brass Band but as a 12 piece Brass Ensemble.

In 2008 the year before their 75th anniversary another name - Kennet Vale Brass – was to better reflect their smaller format. Latterly in 2014, another name change to KV Brass along with its oompah alter ego the KV Bavarian Brass!
