A SERVICE OF CONFIRMATION

GATHERING AND PREPARATION

Hymn: TiS 132

1. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God almighty,

early in the morning to you our praise shall be;

holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty

God in three persons, blessèd Trinity.

2. Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore you,

casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;

cherubim and seraphim falling down before you,

God everlasting through eternity.

3. Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide you,

though the sinful human eye your glory may not see,

you alone are holy, there is none beside you

perfect in power, in love and purity.

4. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God almighty,

all your works shall praise your name in earth and sky and sea;

holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty

God in three persons, blessèd Trinity.

Greeting [BISHOP]

The Lord be with you.

AND ALSO WITH YOU.

[ALM]

There is one Body and one Spirit;

THERE IS ONE HOPE IN GOD’S CALL TO US.

One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism,

ONE GOD AND FATHER OF ALL.

Introduction

In confirmation those who have been previously baptised come to

confirm their baptismal promises and join with the other candidates to

receive the laying on of the bishop’s hand with prayer. We pray that

those who are baptised and confirmed will be empowered by the Holy

Spirit for the ministry and service to which God shall call them.

So we welcome those to be confirmed, with their sponsors and

family. We give thanks for them, and pray that they may know God’s

love and faithfulness forever.

4

Confession - [ALM]

Let us affirm our trust in God’s mercy,

and confess our need of forgiveness.

Lord God, you created this world, and made us in your own image.

Forgive us when we turn away from you.

Lord, have mercy.

LORD, HAVE MERCY

Lord God, through your Son you overcame evil and death. Rescue us

from slavery to sin.

Christ, have mercy.

CHRIST, HAVE MERCY

Lord God, by your Spirit, you restore us to fellowship with you and with

one another. Breathe your love and freedom into our lives.

Lord, have mercy.

LORD, HAVE MERCY

Absolution - [BISHOP]

Almighty God have mercy on you,

forgive you your sins,

and keep you in life eternal. Amen.

Let us pray [BISHOP]

Almighty God,

you have taught us through your Son

that love is the fulfilling of the law:

grant that we may love you with our whole heart,

and our neighbours as ourselves;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)

First Reading: Isaiah 2:1-15

The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. 2 In days to come the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established

as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; all

the nations shall stream to it. 3Many peoples shall come and say, ‘Come,

let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of

Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.’

For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the Lord from

Jerusalem. 4 He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for

many peoples; they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their

spears into pruning-hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation,

neither shall they learn war any more. 5 O house of Jacob, come, let us

walk in the light of the Lord! 6 For you have forsaken the ways of your

people, O house of Jacob. Indeed they are full of diviners from the

east and of soothsayers like the Philistines, and they clasp hands with

foreigners. 7 Their land is filled with silver and gold, and there is no end

to their treasures; their land is filled with horses, and there is no end to

their chariots. 8 Their land is filled with idols; they bow down to the work

of their hands, to what their own fingers have made. 9 And so people are

humbled, and everyone is brought low—do not forgive them! 10

Enter

into the rock, and hide in the dust from the terror of the Lord, and from

the glory of his majesty. 11

The haughty eyes of people shall be brought

low, and the pride of everyone shall be humbled; and the Lord alone will

be exalted on that day. 12

For the Lord of hosts has a day against all that

is proud and lofty, against all that is lifted up and high; 13

against all the

cedars of Lebanon, lofty and lifted up; and against all the oaks of Bashan; 14

against all the high mountains, and against all the lofty hills; 15

against

every high tower, and against every fortified wall;

Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

7

Psalm: 29

1 Ascribe to the Lord, you powers of heaven:

ascribe to the Lord glory and might.

2 Ascribe to the Lord the honour due to his name:

O worship the Lord in the beauty of his holiness.

3 The voice of the Lord is upon the waters:

the God of glory thunders, the Lord upon the great waters.

4 The voice of the Lord is mighty in operation:

the voice of the Lord is a glorious voice.

5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar-trees:

the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.

6 He makes them skip like a calf:

Lebanon and Sirion like a young wild ox.

7 The voice of the Lord divides the lightning-flash:

the voice of the Lord whirls the sands of the desert, the Lord whirls the desert

of Kadesh.

8 The voice of the Lord rends the terebinth trees, and strips bare the

forests:

in his temple all cry ‘Glory.’

9 The Lord sits enthroned above the water-flood:

the Lord sits enthroned as a king for ever.

10 The Lord will give strength to his people:

the Lord will give to his people the blessing of peace.

Second Reading: ROMANS 8.12-17 12

So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live

according to the flesh— 13

for if you live according to the flesh, you will die;

but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14

For

all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15

For you did not

receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit

of adoption. When we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ 16

it is that very Spirit bearing

witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17

and if children, then

heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him

so that we may also be glorified with him.

Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

8

Gradual Hymn: TiS 140

1. Firmly I believe and truly

God is Three and God is One;

and I next acknowledge duly

manhood taken by the Son.

2. And I trust and hope most fully

in that manhood crucified;

and each thought and deed

unruly

do to death, as he has died.

3. Simply to his grace and wholly

light and life and strength belong,

and I love supremely, solely,

him the holy, him the strong.

4. And I hold in veneration,

for the love of him alone,

holy church as his creation,

and her teachings as his own.

5. Adoration ay be given,

with and through the angelic host,

to the God of earth and heaven,

Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

John Henry Newman

1801–90

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet

our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.

The Lord be with you

AND ALSO WITH YOU

The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint John chapter 3

beginning at the 1

st verse.

GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST. 1Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews.

2He came

to Jesus by night and said to him, ‘Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who

has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the

presence of God.’ 3Jesus answered him, ‘Very truly, I tell you, no one can see

the kingdom of God without being born from above.’ 4Nicodemus said to him,

‘How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second

time into the mother’s womb and be born?’ 5Jesus answered, ‘Very truly, I

tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water

and Spirit. 6What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is

9

spirit. 7Do not be astonished that I said to you, “You must be born from

above.” 8The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but

you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone

who is born of the Spirit.’ 9Nicodemus said to him, ‘How can these things be?’

10Jesus answered him, ‘Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not

understand these things? 11

‘Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know

and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. 12

If I

have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you

believe if I tell you about heavenly things? 13

No one has ascended into

heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 14

And

just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man

be lifted up, 15

that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16

‘For God

so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes

in him may not perish but may have eternal life. 17

‘Indeed, God did not send

the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world

might be saved through him.

Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

CONFIRMATION

The Presentation [BISHOP]

We welcome those who have come to be confirmed.

I invite their sponsors to stand with them now.

[Parish clergy] We present: Doug, Joe, Jessica, Natasha, William,

Campbell, Miranda, Limin, Vivienne, Joseph, Frank & William

who come to be confirmed.

The Decision: (the Bishop says to the candidates who answer supported

by their sponsors)

Before God and this congregation, you must affirm that you turn to

Christ and reject all that is evil:

Do you turn to Christ?

I turn to Christ.

Do you repent of your sins?

I repent of my sins.

Do you reject selfish living, and all that is false and unjust?

I reject them all.

Do you renounce Satan and all evil?

I renounce all that is evil.'

The bishop says to the candidates

Will you each, by God’s grace, strive to live as a disciple of Christ,

loving God with your whole heart, and your neighbour as yourself,

until your life’s end?

I will, with God’s help.

The bishop says to the congregation

You have heard these our brothers and sisters respond to Christ. Will

you support them in this calling?

The congregation answer: WE WILL.

11

[Candidates & Sponsors sit]

The Prayers – [ALM]

Let us pray for those who have affirmed their baptism and are to

receive the laying on of hands.

Merciful God, deliver them from all evil that they may walk in the way

of truth and life;

Lord in your mercy

HEAR OUR PRAYER.

Open their hearts by the Holy Spirit to your grace and truth;

Lord in your mercy

HEAR OUR PRAYER.

Keep them in the faith and communion of your holy Church;

Lord in your mercy

HEAR OUR PRAYER.

Send them into the world to witness to your love and justice;

Lord in your mercy

HEAR OUR PRAYER.

Bring them and us all into the fullness of your peace and glory;

Lord in your mercy

HEAR OUR PRAYER.

12

The Profession of Faith [Bishop]

I now ask the congregation to stand and join with the candidates and

sponsors as we affirm the faith of the Church.

Do you believe in God the Father?

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

Do you believe in God the Son?

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose from the dead;

he ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of the Father;

from there he will come to judge

the living and the dead.

Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

This is the faith of the Church.

This is our faith

We believe and trust in one God,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

13

[Congregation Sit]

(The bishop says)

Our help is in the name of the Lord

WHO MADE HEAVEN AND EARTH.

Blessed be the name of the Lord

NOW, AND FOR EVER. AMEN.

(The bishop continues)

Almighty and everliving God,

you have given your servants

new birth by water and the Spirit,

and have forgiven them their sins.

Strengthen them, we pray, with the Holy Spirit

that they may grow in grace.

Increase in them the spirit of wisdom and understanding,

the spirit of discernment and inner strength,

the spirit of knowledge and true godliness,

and fill them with wonder and awe at your presence,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

[Parish clergy] We invite the candidates and their sponsors to

come forward to be presented to the Bishop.

Laying on of hands and anointing. [BISHOP]

Strengthen, Lord, your servant, (name) with your Holy Spirit.

Empower and sustain her/him for your service.

(And each of them answers with the congregation)

Amen.

The congregation joins with the bishop in saying this prayer after all

the candidates have received the laying on of hands,

Defend, O Lord these your servants with your heavenly grace, that

they may continue Yours for ever, and daily increase in your Holy

Spirit more and more until they come to your everlasting kingdom.

Amen.

14

Almighty and ever-living God,

watch over these your servants

upon whom we have now laid our hands.

Let your Holy Spirit always be with them

and lead them to know and obey your word,

that they may serve you in this life,

and dwell with you in the life to come,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE GREETING OF PEACE (all stand)

{Celebrant} We are the body of Christ.

His Spirit is with us.

The peace of the Lord be always with you.

And also with you.

[A greeting of peace is exchanged with those around us]

15

Offertory Hymn: TiS 560

1. All my hope on God is founded;

all my trust he will renew,

through all change and chance he

guides me,

only good and only true.

God unknown,

he alone

calls my heart to be his own.

2. Human pride and earthly glory,

sword and crown betray our trust;

all we build with care and labour,

tower and temple, fall to dust.

But God’s power,

hour by hour,

is my temple and my tower.

3. God’s great goodness lasts for

ever,

deep his wisdom, passing thought;

splendour, light and life attend him,

beauty springing out of naught.

Evermore

from his store

new-born worlds rise and adore.

4. Daily the almighty giver

will his bounteous gifts bestow;

in his will our souls find pleasure,

leading us where’er we go.

Love will stand

at his hand,

joy shall wait for his command.

5. Still from earth to God eternal

sacrifice of praise be done,

high above all praises praising

for the gift of Christ his Son.

Hear Christ call

one and all:

those who follow shall not fall.

For we all share in the one bread.

The Choir sings the Agnus Dei

Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts

by faith with thanksgiving.

Baptised Christians who receive communion in their own church

are invited to share communion with us.

Communion wine may be received:

THE SENDING OUT OF GOD'S PEOPLE

Prayer after Communion

Gracious God,

in baptism you make us one family in Christ your Son,

one in the sharing of his body and his blood,

one in the communion of his Spirit.

Help us to grow in love for one another

and come to the full maturity of the body of Christ.

Father, we offer ourselves to you

as a living sacrifice

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Send us out in the power of your Spirit

to live and work to your praise and glory.

19

Final Hymn: TiS 658

1. I, the Lord of sea and sky,

I have heard my people cry.

All who dwell in dark and sin

my hand will save.

I who made the stars of night,

I will make their darkness bright.

Who will bear my light to them?

Whom shall I send?

Here I am, Lord;

is it I, Lord?

I have heard you

calling in the night;

I will go, Lord,

if you lead me.

I will hold your

people in my heart.

2. I, the Lord of snow and rain,

I have borne my people’s pain;

I have wept for love of them.

They turn away.

I will break their hearts of stone,

give them hearts for love alone.

I will speak my word to them.

Whom shall I send?

Here I am, Lord...

3. I, the Lord of wind and flame,

I will tend the poor and lame,

I will set a feast for them.

My hand will save.

Finest bread I will provide

till their hearts are satisfied.

I will give my life to them.

Whom shall I send?

Here I am, Lord...
