The picture is always a contradiction. People seeking understanding of God’s Word end up red-faced and shouting at each other. They take the words spoken by the one we call “The Prince of Peace” and use them as weapons to destroy not only the other one’s argument, but also their spirit. At the end of it all, both are left exhausted and no closer to God than when they started. They stand toe to toe and never see eye to eye.

When we read the gospels there is no way to know exactly the tone with which Jesus spoke. The black and white of print cannot convey that. Yet, the meaning of nearly everything Jesus said leads me to believe that he was not a shouter or brow beater. People who know what they are talking about rarely shout and feel no need to argue. No one knew more about God than Jesus.

Unfortunately, many of his followers who know God far less intimately than he, feel compelled to compel others into the kingdom. They wrangle over words that do not enlighten, and only hurt the one who is listening. For this reason the Apostle Paul encourages all who take seriously their journey toward God to present yourself to God, as one approved by him, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

All of us are working toward a greater understanding of God’s Will for our lives, and we will get there no quicker by using spiritual words to put someone else down.

WHAT IS THIS ENVELOPE?

The “CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT FUND” envelope was mistakenly placed in your Envelope Giving Box in place of the “BUILDING FUND” envelope which has been there for years. The new “Capital Improvement Fund” envelope should be used for the same purpose you used the “Building Fund” envelope in the past. As always, any check designated for the “Capital Campaign” should be so marked on the check and on the “Capital Improvement Fund” envelope.

• EASTMINSTER CARESWe filled the food boxes with the food and merchandise that the congregation had purchased for 14 families at Christmas. Many Christmas gifts were given to children of needy families, and gifts were purchased and wrapped for elderly residents at the York Co. Pleasant Acres Nursing and Rehab. Facility. If you haven’t taken the opportunity to read the annual report of the church and missions in particular, I urge you to do so. Great things are happening at Eastminster that demonstrate how much Eastminster Cares!

SOUPER BOWL The next activity is the Souper Bowl of Caring with the youth of EPC soliciting donations of food and/or money on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb 5th. Proceeds will be donated to the York County Food Bank.

BROWNIE BAKERSWe are asking those who are willing to continue making brownies for the 1st Thurs of the month to sign up for this year on the signup sheet on the narthex door going down to fellowship hall. You may take a schedule from the supply hanging there.

OUR DAILY BREAD SOUP KITCHEN Additional opportunities for helping have been made known to us. Please call Lee Hankey at 881-0230 if you would like a chance to serve.

Each member of the congregation is in a Care Group and each Deacon has responsibility for one of these groups. The luncheon is a way to meet each other, fellowship and of course enjoy a delicious meal together. There will be no structured program, just a wonderful time of fellowship and friendship. A special invitation is extended to all the members who have joined Eastminster this past year. Please reserve the date and look for reservation information in the next several weeks.

SHORT AND SWEET! The FMC volunteers logged in 76 hours since the last newsletter and most of that time was spent indoors. The usual monthly checks of all the systems were performed and batteries replaced as needed. Maintenance and repairs were done but there are still a number of “indoor” items on our list. Some items needing just an hour or two, while others require a scheduled workday. In fact, I am writing this after returning home from EPC, where five volunteers spent the holiday (MLK Day ) in our preschool replacing the lavatory faucets. Dick Campbell joked that three guys took six hours to drill six holes and put in six screws! What looked like a simple enough project turned out to be anything but. I guess that this is what happens when the plumbing, electrical, and other systems are approaching “old age”. I did tell them they would be getting double time, as it was a holiday. That meant extra servings of dessert, as the guys work for food, thank goodness!

Several weather incidents required attention from our contractor with special emphasis on the icy parking lots. Safety is a major concern and we thank our Facilities Manager, Harold Smith, for coming in on his days off and monitoring the situations.

Our January meeting resulted in an extensive list of projects and we are in the process of determining the best way to remedy the sanctuary tile situation as well as several other “capital” items. We also have a list of indoor items for FMC to do. Once the calendar says it is springtime, we will head outdoors and start landscaping. We invite any member of our church family, who would like to share their talents, to join us at our monthly meetings. We meet in the Haines Multipurpose Room on the first Tuesday of the month. Dessert is served at 12:30 and the meeting begins at 1PM. We always need another painter, plumber, electrician or “go-for”, you know the person who leaves the project to get a needed tool! HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY EVERYONE!

• PRE-SCHOOLFEBRUARY IS THE MONTH FOR LOVE…and we want to tell you all about the things we love at preschool!

We love…stories!

The 4 year classes just spent some time at Nixon Park with Seneca storyteller, Jerry Dietz. These stories are traditional folk tales from the Seneca tribe that explain many things about the animal world. One of our favorite stories is How the Chipmunk Got His Stripes. Mr. Dietz has a way with spinning a yarn and keeping the attention of even the wiggliest preschooler. Check out Nixon Park’s site for more information on community events.

We love…being healthy!

For Sight Vision Screening will be coming in to the preschool to check our eyes. This is a free program offered to local preschools. Through this program, we have been able to identify vision issues with our young children that may have gone unnoticed until Kindergarten!

We love…Eastminster Presbyterian Church!

Join us on February 26 for Preschool Sunday! We will be recognizing our preschool students, families, and staff at this special service.

We love…making new friends!

Eastminster Preschool has opened enrollment for the 2016-2017 school year!

Please contact the office at 717-755-0543 or [email protected] for enrollment materials.

An Open House will be held on Thursday March 2, 6:30-8:00. This is an excellent opportunity to meet the teachers and tour our classrooms. We hope to see you there!

• HISTORIAN

JOHN GLOUCESTER

In honor of Black History Month, this month we will review the life of John Gloucester. Gloucester was the founder of the first African American Presbyterian Church. He was born a slave in 1776 in what is today Blount County, Tennessee. His slave name was Jack. Jack was a believer in Christ and converted other slaves to Christianity from a relatively early age.

The Rev. Gideon Blackburn was the new pastor of the New Providence Presbyterian Church. Rev. Blackburn recognized Jack’s potential and began to teach him about theology and other subjects. Blackburn purchased Jack with the sole purpose of helping him gain his freedom.

In 1806 Blackburn petitioned the Tennessee Legislature for Jack’s freedom. The petition was denied. The legislature was concerned with the thought of a freed black man preaching in a state where slavery was an accepted institution. However, later in 1806, Blackburn received a certificate of manumission for Jack through the local court system. Jack became a free man at the age of 30.

Jack changed his name to John Gloucester. Rev. Blackburn took Gloucester to the meeting of the Presbytery of East Tennessee. Gloucester requested “a license to preach to the Africans.” The Presbytery unanimously voted to accept him under their care and instructed him to return after completing further studies.

Gloucester began formal studies at Greenville College (now Tusculum College) in Tennessee on November 5, 1806. He was the first African American to attend the institution. Gloucester was mentored by the Rev. Hezekiah Balch and Charles Coffin.

By 1807 Gloucester had completed his studies and traveled to Philadelphia with Rev. Blackburn. Gloucester was supported by the well-respected Rev. Archibald Alexander. Alexander was the pastor of the Third Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, the former lead professor of the Princeton Seminary and an abolitionist.

Gloucester was permitted to preach in the City of Philadelphia. Gloucester found and established a group of followers within the city. About the same time another group of influential people were looking to form a place of worship for African Americans of Presbyterian faith. The two groups led to the formation of the First Colored Presbyterian Church (as it was originally called) in 1807.

Gloucester was briefly sent by the Presbytery of Philadelphia to Charleston, South Carolina. Gloucester was then licensed by the Presbytery of Philadelphia to preach, but could not officially lead the church until he was ordained. He was sent back to Tennessee.

On April 13, 1810, John Gloucester was ordained at Baker’s Creek Presbyterian Church in Maryville, Tennessee. John’s wife, Rhoda and his four children, John Jr, Jeremiah, Steven and Mary (another son James was born later) were still slaves in Tennessee. Gloucester received financial assistance from friends and supporters to raise $1,500 to purchase his wife and children.

John Gloucester returned to Philadelphia and overcame a number of roadblocks to continue the evolution of the First African Presbyterian Church. Gloucester initially preached in homes and on the street then secured the use of a school house. In 1811 a church building was built on Shippen Street (today Bainbridge Street). Gloucester became a member of the Presbytery of Philadelphia on April 16, 1811.

Gloucester believed “that the Christian education of the congregation would be further enhanced if the members could read the Bible for themselves.” A Sabbath School was established. Gloucester’s children attended the Sabbath School. All four sons later became Presbyterian ministers and three formed congregations of their own. Jeremiah established the Second African Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia in 1824. Steven formed the Lombard Central Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia in 1844. James started the Shibam Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn, New York in 1849.

In conclusion, we remember John Gloucester as a man who overcame tremendous odds. He left behind a life of slavery for freedom for himself and later his family. He seized opportunities that were presented and was able to establish the First African Presbyterian Church, the nation’s oldest African Presbyterian Church in America.

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts, prayers, cards and phone calls during my recent hospital visits at OSS and York Hospital. It is great having so many friends at Eastminster.

John and Jane Henty would like to thank their church family for all the many thoughtful gestures during this time. Jane’s mother, Lucy Persons was made to feel part of the family by many visits and cards. We are both touched by the heartfelt sympathy we have felt with her passing.

John and Jane Henty

NOAH would like to thank the person who gave a most generous monetary gift, anonymously, to our group. It will be most helpful with the cost of food and programs. Many thanks.
