• Chainsaws are potentially dangerous tools.Professional training is recommended before firstuse.

• If you are not familiar with chainsaws and thefelling of trees, it is recommended that youobtain further more detailed instructions andinformation regarding chain-sawing in additionto reading this manual fully. We also recommendthat inexperienced chainsaw users practicecutting logs on a saw-horse or log cradle beforeattempting to fell a tree.

• Keep work area clean.

• Do NOT start cutting until you have a clear workarea, secure footing and a planned, clear escapepath from the falling tree or limb.

• Use extreme caution when cutting small sizebrush and saplings because the slender materialmay catch the saw chain and be whipped towardyou or pull you off balance.

• Do NOT operate a chainsaw at height in a treeor on a ladder unless specifically trained to do so.

• When cutting a limb that is under tension, bealert for spring back so that you will not bestruck when the tension in the wood fibres isreleased.

• Do NOT expose the chainsaw to rain.

• Do NOT use the chainsaw in damp or wetconditions.

• Do NOT use the chainsaw in presence offlammable liquids or gases.

• Keep children, bystanders and pets away fromthe work area.

• When not in use, chainsaws should be stored in adry, secure location – well out of the reach ofchildren.

• Always fit the chain guard when not in use.

• Never force the chainsaw - it will do the job better andsafer when used correctly.

• Only suitable for use to cut wood with a diametersmaller than the length of the guide bar.

• Do NOT use chainsaw for cutting plastic, masonry,non-wood building materials.

• Do NOT use the chainsaw for any use other than theintended use described in these instructions.

• Make sure you are suitably dressed when using thechainsaw with correct standard Personal ProtectiveEquipment.

• Do NOT wear loose clothing or jewellery that can getcaught in moving parts. Heavy duty gloves and sturdynon-slip work boots are recommended when workingoutdoors.

• Wear a hairnet to contain long hair which can getcaught in moving parts.

• Always wear suitable head, ear and eye protection.

• Carry the chainsaw by the front handle with the sawstopped, your finger off the trigger and the guide barand saw chain to your rear.

• Periodically inspect chainsaw for damage. Do NOT useif damaged in any way.

• Always clean after use and replace worn parts whenperformance becomes reduced.

• Do not smoke while handling fuel or while operatingthe chainsaw.

• Follow instructions for lubricating and changingaccessories.

• Keep handles dry, clean and free from oil and grease.

• Turn off the chainsaw when not in use, before servicingor cleaning, and when changing accessories andattachments, such as saw chain and guard.

• Stay alert, watch what you are doing. Always usecommon sense.

• Do NOT operate chainsaw when you are tired, illor under the influence of alchol or drugs.

• Using a chainsaw can be strenuous. Remember totake regular breaks. Tiredness may result in loss ofcontrol.

• Keep all parts of the body away from the chainwhen the chainsaw is switched on.

• Before you start the saw, make sure the saw chainis not in contact with anything.

• Always check for damaged parts before first andevery use or if the chainsaw is dropped. Do NOTuse if any part is damaged in any way. Check foralignment of moving parts, binding of movingparts, breakage of parts, mounting and any otherconditions that may affect operation. Any part thatis damaged should be properly repaired or replacedby an authorised service centre unless otherwiseindicated elsewhere in this instruction manual.

• Regularly check that all the fixings are secure asvibrations in use may cause them to loosen overtime.

• When servicing, use only identical replacementparts.

• Do NOT use the chainsaw if the switch does notturn it on and off.

• Do NOT operate a chainsaw that is damaged, improperly adjusted, or is not completely andsecurely assembled. Be sure that the saw chainstops moving when the trigger is released beforeusing to cut wood.

• Guard against kickback.

• Only use replacement bars and chains specified bythe manufacturer or the equivalent.

• For outdoor domestic use only.

Warning!

RESIDUAL RISKS

Despite the above warnings and due to the nature ofthe product, there remains a residual risk, whichcannot be prevented when using a chainsaw. Thefollowing potential hazards might apply:

• Contact with exposed saw teeth of the saw chain(cutting hazards).

• Access to the rotating saw chain (cutting hazards).

• Unforeseen, abrupt movement of the guide bar(cutting hazards.)

• Parts flung out from the saw chain (cutting/injectionhazards).

• Wood splinter ejection.

• Inhalation of wood particles and dust - there maybe health risks caused by breathing in dust, especially dust generated from sawing oak, beechand MDF.

• Skin contact with the lubricating oil.

• Loss of hearing, if ear protection is not worn.

INTENDED/UNINTENDED USE

When using the chainsaw, the user must arrange touse personal protective equipment according to themanual. Parts of the intended use are detailed in themanual’s safety warnings and references for use bythose who work with the chain saw or maintain it,therefore the user must be familiar with the manual.Only use original or approved spare parts (e.g. guidebar; saw chain).

Warning!

Vibration Warning!

Prolonged use of chainsaws or any other machinethat vibrates in use, may produce a medical conditioncalled “white finger disease”, “Raynaud’sphenomenon”, or “carpal tunnel syndrome”.

These conditions can cause numbness, burningsensations and circulation damage, and may reducethe hand’s ability to feel and regulate temperature. The factors that contribute to these conditions arenot fully known, but high vibrations may be a cause.

Users should take precautions to minimise the riskswhich include:

• Wear gloves

• Keep hands warm

• Take breaks from prolonged use

• Keep the chain saw sharp so that it operates assmoothly as possible

• Maintain a firm grip but do not squeeze too tightand for too long at any one time.

Continual and regular users should monitor theirhands and fingers and if any symptoms occur, or ifyou are worried at any time, cease use and consultyour medical practitioner for further advice.

Warning! Restriction of use.

Please check with your local authority before using achainsaw as there may be regulations in force thatrestrict their use e.g. in times of drought.

Warning! Hearing protection.

It is recommended that safety ear/hearing protectionis worn at all times when operating this chain saw.Chain saw noise may damage your hearing. Regularusers should have frequent hearing tests with theirmedical practitioner.

The hearing protection should be suitable fordefending hearing for the following levels:

Sound pressure level according to ISO22868LPA:108dB(A).

Sound pressure level according to ISO22868 LWA:<116dB(A)

Inhalation Warning!

Using the chainsaw may generate dust, mist andfumes containing chemicals that could be harmful tothe user. Dust alone may also be harmful and shouldnot be inhaled. Never use the chain saw to cutanything that is known to contain a harmfulsubstance such as asbestos. Always operate thechainsaw in a well-ventilated location, preferablyoutdoors. Remember that the fuel and oil used topower and lubricate this machine will give offharmful fumes in use, and when filling – alwaysensure there is sufficient ventilation as soon as youstart the engine. A dust mask or breathing apparatusis recommended safety equipment, and anyone witha respiratory or other breathing medical condition isadvised to consult their medical practitioner beforeusing the chainsaw.

KICKBACK SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR CHAINSAW USERS

WARNING

Kickback may occur when the nose or tip of the guide bar touches anobject, or when the wood closes in and pinches the saw chain in the cut.Tip contact in some cases may cause a lightning fast reverse reaction, kicking the guide bar up and back towards the operator. Pinching the sawchain along the top of the guide bar may push the guide bar rapidly backtowards the operator. Either of these reactions may cause you to Iosecontrol of the chainsaw, which could result in serious personal injury.

Do not rely exclusively on the safety devices built into your chainsaw. As achainsaw user you should take several steps to keep cutting jobs free fromaccident or injury.

(1) With a basic understanding of kickback you can reduce or eliminate theelement of surprise. Sudden surprise contributes to accidents.

(2) Keep a good grip on the saw with both hands, the right hand on the rearhandle, and the left hand on the front handle, when the engine is running.Use a firm grip with thumbs and fingers encircling the chain saw handles.A firm grip will help you reduce kickback and maintain control of the saw.

(3) Make certain that the area in which you are cutting is free fromobstructions. Do not let the nose of the guide bar make contact with alog, branch, or any other obstruction which could be hit while you areoperating the saw.

(4) Cut at high engine speeds.

(5) Do not overreach or cut above shoulder height.

(6) Follow the manufacturer’s sharpening and maintenance instructions forthe saw chain.

(7) Only use replacement bars and chains specified by the manufacturer or the equivalent.

AVOIDING PULL-IN

Pull-in can occur when the bottom of the chain is used forcutting and is stopped suddenly by hitting a foreign objector getting pinched. This pulls the chainsaw forwards andmay cause the user to lose control. Pull-in can also occurwhen the chain is not running at full speed when contact ismade with the wood and if the bumper spike is not heldsecurely against the wood being cut.

• Ensure the chain is rotating at full speed and the bumperspike is correctly positioned when making a cut.

AVOIDING PUSHBACK

Pushback can occur when the top of the chain is used forcutting and is stopped suddenly by hitting a foreign objector getting pinched. This pulls the chainsaw towards theuser and may cause the user to lose control.

• Take care not to twist the chainsaw as it is removedwhen bucking from underneath the log.

• Do NOT cut more than one log at any one time.

• Be aware of situations that may cause the chain to pinchor pull.

BUMPER SPIKE

This is used to help secure the tree or limb when cuttingand should be used at all times when positioning thechainsaw. It will help prevent pull-in, pushback, kickbackand loss of control.

Important

[Caution] Check brake operation before each use.

How to confirm:

1) Turn on the engine. 2) Holding the chain saw horizontally, release your hand from the fronthandle, hit the tip of the guide bar to a stump or a piece of wood, andconfirm brake operation. Operating level varies by bar size (F14).

If the engine is kept running at high speed whilst the brake is engaged, the clutch will overheat and become damaged.

Always hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands when the engine isrunning. Use a firm grip with thumb and fingers encircling the chain sawhandles.

Keep all parts of your body away from the saw chain when the engine isrunning.

All chainsaw service, other than the items listed in the Instructions, shouldbe performed by competent chainsaw service personnel. (e.g., if impropertools are used to remove the flywheel, or if an improper tool is used tohold the flywheel in order to remove the clutch, structural damage to theflywheel could occur which could subsequently cause the flywheel todisintegrate.)

Always turn off the engine before putting the chainsaw down.

Use extreme caution when cutting small size brush and saplings becauseslender material may catch the saw chain and be whipped toward you orpull you off balance, or stop the chain.

When cutting a limb that is under tension, be alert for spring-back so thatyou will not be struck when the tension in the wood fibres is released.

Kickback is the upward motion of the guide bar which occurs when thesaw chain at the nose of the guide bar makes contact with an object.Kickback can lead to dangerous loss of control of the chainsaw.

STOPPING THE ENGINE

1. Release the throttle lever to allow the engine to idle for a few minutes. 2. Set the switch to the "O" (STOP) position (F15).3. Be aware that the chain will continue to move for a short time after theengine has stopped.

Warning

Before proceeding to your job, read For SafeOperation section p7-8. It is recommended to firstpractice sawing easy logs. This also helps you getaccustomed to your unit. Always follow the safetyregulations. The chainsaw must only be used forcutting wood. It is not suitable for cutting any othertype of material. Vibrations and kickback vary withdifferent types of woods. Do not use the chainsawas a lever for lifting, moving or splitting objects. It isnot necessary to force the saw into the cut. Applyonly light pressure while running the engine at fullthrottle. When the saw chain is caught in the cut,do not attempt to pull it out by force, but use awedge or a lever to open the way. Do not fit anyother tools to the chainsaw or use for any otherpurpose other than those specified in theseinstructions.

GUARD AGAINST KICKBACK (F15)

This saw is equipped with a chain brake that will stopthe chain in the event of kickback if operatingproperly. You must check the chain brake operationbefore each usage by running the saw at full thethrottle for I – 2 seconds and pushing the front handguard forward. The chain should stop immediatelywith the engine at full speed. If the chain is slow tostop or does not stop, replace the brake band andclutch drum before use.

It is extremely important that the chain brake bechecked for proper operation before each use andthat the chain be sharp in order to maintain thekickback safety level of this saw. Removal of thesafety devices, inadequate maintenance, or incorrectreplacement of the bar or chain may increase the riskof serious personal injury due to kickback and willinvalidate your warranty (F15).

Sawing

Once the direction of fall is determined, clear twoescape routes. These should be in the oppositedirection to the planned direction of fall andapproximately at 45° to the position of the undercut.Ensure that tools and equipment do not block theescape routes at any time.

Further precautions to be taken when felling trees:

• Take extra care when felling in the vicinity of powerlines, railway lines and roads. If the tree felling istoo dangerous to perform due to these hazards, doNOT proceed with the felling and seek professionaladvice from a qualified arborist.

• Always ensure a work area of 2½ tree lengths isclear of people around the tree.

• Trees with large buttress roots may require thebuttress root to be cut before felling. To do this cutvertically into the buttress root and thenhorizontally until the buttress root becomes looseand can be removed.

Felling:

• The chainsaw must be running before it comes intocontact with the wood. Switch on the chainsaw.Saw a notch (remove a 45° wedge of trunk) up to¼ of the depth of the trunk into a low part of thetree trunk in the direction of the fall and thenremove the loose piece.

FELLING TREES

To fell a tree, observe all the safety regulations andproceed as follows:

The chainsaw may be used to fell only trees withtrunks which are smaller in diameter than the lengthof the guide bar. If the saw chain gets jammed, release it using a wooden wedge. Do not try to leverthe saw out of the cut. When felling on a slope, always stand uphill of the tree.

Check the tree for signs of damage or decay beforefelling. Decayed trees can split during felling and deador loose branches could free themselves through thevibrations of the sawing action. Felling trees isdangerous and requires practice. If you are a beginneror inexperienced using chainsaws seek professionaltraining.

First determine the likely direction of fall using thefollowing criteria:

• The intended direction of fall.

• The wind direction and wind speed.

• The natural lean of the tree.

• Slope of the ground.

• Any surrounding tree or building which mayobstruct, deflect or cause the falling tree to changedirection.

• Any other factors, such as uneven branchconfiguration which could cause the tree to beheavier on one side than the other.

Always ensure you have a firm foothold. Do notstand on the log. Be alert to the rolling over of a cutlog. Especially when working on a slope, stand onthe uphill side of the log. Follow the instructions inFor Safe Operation p.7-8 to avoid kickback of thechainsaw.

Before starting work, check the direction of bendingforce inside the log to be cut. Always finish cuttingfrom the opposite side of bending direction to preventthe guide bar from being caught in the cut.

Felling: (continued)

• Make a horizontal cut on the side opposite to thenotch; ensuring approximately a tenth of thediameter of the trunk is not sawn, forming a hingewhich will allow the tree to fall in a controlledmanner. Do NOT cut all the way through thehinge as this could de-stabilise the falling tree.

• Always stand to the side of the falling tree, neverbehind it.

• When the tree begins to fall, remove the chainsaw, switch the chainsaw off, call a warning of “Timber!”,and retreat through the cleared escape route.Beware of falling limbs as you retreat.

• When the tree falls, watch the crown. Wait for thecrown to stop moving. Do NOT continue to workunder branches which have got stuck and possiblysupport the weight of the crown.

BUCKING TECHNIQUES

Log supported along entire length. Cut up from beneath the buck being careful not to cut into the ground.

Log supported on one end, proceed First, make an insertion from beneath, as if using a saw horse. cutting up 1/3 of the buck diameter to

avoid splintering. Secondly, cut from above the buck to meet the first insertion.Avoid pinching.

Log supported on both ends. Make a cut from above the buck of 1/3 ofthe buck diameter, equidistant between the supports at each end, to avoid splintering. Cut up from beneath to meet the first cut. Avoid pinching.

Note: The best way to hold a log while bucking is to use a saw horse. When thisis not possible, the logshould be raised andsupported by limbstumps or by usingsupporting logs. Ensurethe log being cut is

securely supported.

BUCKING USING A SAW HORSE

1. Hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands and keep the saw to the right ofyour body while cutting.

2. Keep the left arm as straight as possible.

3. Keep weight on both feet.

The chainsaw should only be used when the buck hassturdy, reliable support. The machine should be held tothe right of the body, at a safe distance.

The chain needs to be moving at full speed before coming into contact with thewood. When this has been achieved, the machine should be fixed to the woodusing dogs. During cutting this support should be used as a lever.

• Hold the chainsaw firmly with both hands and keep the chainsaw to the rightof your body while cutting.

• Keep the left arm as straight as possible.

• Keep weight on both feet.

SKATING /BOUNCING

When the chainsaw fails to dig in during a cut, the guide bar can begin hoppingor dangerously skidding along the surface of the log or branch, possibly resultingin the loss of control of the chainsaw. To prevent or reduce skating or bouncing, hold the chainsaw with two hands and make sure the saw chain establishes agroove for cutting.

SAW CHAIN

Warning

It is very important for smooth and safe operation to always keepthe cutters sharp.

Your cutters need to be sharpened when:

• Sawdust becomes powder-like. • You need extra force to saw in. • The cut does not go straight. • Vibration increases. • Fuel consumption increases.

Cutter setting standards:

Warning

Be sure to wear safety gloves.

Before filing:

• Make sure the saw chain is held securely. • Make sure the engine is stopped. • Use a round file of proper size for your chain.

Chain type: 21VB File size: 3/16in (4.76mm)

Place your file on the cutter and push straight forward. Keep the fileposition (F30).

After every cutter has been set, check the depth gauge and file it tothe proper level (F31).

Warning

Be sure to round off the front edge to reduce the chance ofkickback or tie-strap breakage.
